  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a 23 GV70 Advanced with the 2.5 engine, 19" Wheels and 9,500 miles on it. Everything on the vehicle is stock including the tires. My problem is that the tires are excessively noisy when on even the slightest pavement imperfections. On a perfectly smooth road it is as quiet as it gets. The noise seems to also cause a vibration in the vehicle along with harshness. I have played around with different PSI, had the car alignment done, all four wheels. The tires show no abnormal wear such as cupping.

I really need some advice on this. Should I take it to the dealer and have them look at it? Keep in mind the closest dealer is 95 miles away so I can't just pop in for a talk with the SA.. Should I have the tires road force balanced? Although the steering wheel is steady with no shaking so I do not believe it is a balance issue. I am wondering if the tires are at fault as I said it is perfect on a smooth surface. Could the tires be defective? Are these tires, Michelin Primacy Tour A/S known to be noisy? Should I get new tires?

I know lots of questions but I really love this car except for this problem. There has to be an answer out there somewhere. Thanks in advance for all your help.

I have the same vehicle. Not sure what you mean by noisy. On tar lined roads, yes I definitely hear the road. Smooth newly paved roads I don't. The car is not silent so not much you can do about it. The Michelin's are known to be quiet. What annoys me is that the rear side windows are not accoustic so I hear noise from the back. That was a terribly cheap corner to cut by Genesis. The top of the line has accoustic windows all around.

Thanks for the response dhuhtala, you hit the problem perfectly. Like you said, not much can be done.

Your dealer probably won't be able to fix the noise problem on your existing tire/wheel setup, but noise-reducing tires and wheels have been on the market for a while now. You'll eventually need new tires, so that's something to keep in mind when the time comes. Noise-reduction technology for wheels though will require a whole new set of wheels that have a resonator attached on the inside (they aren't add-ons). There was a GV80 owner that had a resonator break, forcing him to buy a new wheel (not fixable) and a new tire (the old one was destroyed).

Not sure how well any of this works, but you have some options.

That was an excellent read on the noise cancelling wheels, but it sounds expensive to replace my wheels and tires.

I agree. Buying new wheels isn't something I normally do for my vehicles, so it won't happen until new tires are needed. But I do need some sort of wheel and/or tire noise reduction in my GV70 SP. New roads are very quiet while driving, but I live in an area where studded tires are allowed during the winter months, even with no snow. They chew up the concrete highway panels and my 21s sound like I'm driving over bricks. Good luck in finding something that works. If you ever do, let us know here.

You and I must be more sensitive to the noise than others on this forum. My roads are a lot like yours and transmit the noise into the cabin. When you drive down a street and they have fixed a section with smooth pavement, its like night and day.. But then it goes right back to the crappy pavement...

I am pretty sensitive to it as well but I don't find just tire-on-surface noises too bad, it's when I hit tar lines that it drives me crazy and those are much louder than my 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 - I wonder why a luxury car with all that noise insulation technology can't match my older pickup...or my 2003 Suburban even, for that matter.
