  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have to say I'm kind of disappointed with the exhaust note of the 4.6 Genesis. Both at idle & Wide Open Throttle (WOT). It's too quiet! I understand why Hyundai does this for a "luxury" vehicle, but under WOT I'd like to hear the 370hp. Even my 4.6 T-bird has a better sound under WOT. (Yes, I have modified the exhaust)

Just curious if anyone has had experience with electronic exhaust cut-outs? Reliability? Loudness? Worth the expense?

Guessing nobody has installed these on a Genesis... yet. Looking for experiences with other vehicles.

The reason I'm considering the cut outs & not different (performance) mufflers... The wife drives the car a good 80% of the time. She likes the quiet. I like to have fun on the weekends.:D Plus, the idea of hearing the motor sing at the flip of a switch.

These engines are designed to have some back pressure. If you use cut-outs, there will be less back pressure, and the engine will not run as good as with mufflers. (Has to do with valve timing).

Don't take this personal, but IMHO, cut-outs are for kids, not for adults. I would not want raw hot exaust gasses to be dumping out from under my car. Another thing you have to think of is the Genesis Warranty. The way I see it, this modification could very well be the cause of invalidating the warranty, if you ever have engine or transmissio problems.

I want my Genesis to sound like a luxury car, not like a Harley.

Lastly, I don't blame your wife wanting it quieter. My former Mercury Marauder had performance pipes and mufflers when I bought it used. Neighbors would always tell me that they heard me come in the previous night. Much to loud. My wife hated it.
I went to a muffler place and had them weld in "resonators". (Resonators are an open pipe with double walls, with louvers between the inner and outer pipe - exaust goes right through the center, with no back pressure, and the louvers quiet the sound). The resonators worked great. Still had a rumble, but not nearly as loud.

I have to agree with ctrcbob here. That is just out of character for this car. Just because you can do something does not mean you should. Of course you should do what makes you happy. If you do it though, I think you go go full boat and have it custom painted in some NASCAR scheme since most folks are going to be calling you "Bubbah" anyhow. Seriously though, somewhere on this site I think I remember someone posting a link to a video that showed a really nice custom exhaust installed on a Genesis 4.6 (it had dual tips on each side if that helps someone remember the post). Sounded deep, but still classy. Enjoy.

If you want to hear the engine on WOT, you want an intake imo. All the thick plastic that masks the intake noise could be replaced with aluminum to get some volume. As for the exhaust, you can cut off the resonators on the exhaust and have the holes for them capped, which may help with volume a bit, or wait for an aftermarket exhaust to become available. The magnaflow doesn't fit the bumper cut outs, but its an option.
