Extended warranty - has anybody bought one? Do any Genesis dealers sell them at a discount?

Is it worth purchasing an extended warranty? I know for some other cars you can purchase them at a discount from a different dealer that you bought the car from. Only interested in an extended warranty from Genesis or Hyundai directly not some aftermarket extended warranty. I have a 2023 G90.

If you do a search you will find information on opinion and where to buy one at a good price.

If you keep the car a long time you get some peace of mind should something break. I never bought on and I don't keep a car much longer than warranty period so for me it would be a waste.

I do not see where to search?

I do not see a search bar. Occasionally, it shows up, but it is not always there.

Yes it is worth it. I purchased on my 21 G90 for $4K. I purchased on my LS460 back in 2018. Just had the valley cover plate or some nonsense replaced with all of the fuel injectors on the 145K LS460- $6K and change. Covered by warranty. Get the warranty.

Did you buy it from your dealer or shop around?

I purchased it directly from the dealer. They told me the cost and it seemed reasonable. Didn't have the time or inclination to try and shop around.

This FORD dealer sells discounted warranties. I bought one for my Shelby GT500, but they also offer coverage for most makes and models. Some great deals.

4k for an extendo on a 90 is anything but reasonable. Management treated the sales team to dinner and drinks on you that night.

There is always a wise guy, isn't there. I paid $4k for my Lexus warranty which ran on top of cpo status in 2018 and it ends this May of 2025 I have had more than double that amount of repairs made under warranty.

All things considered, $4k for a genesis warranty on top of CPO status seems reasonable to me based on my experience. Warranty is good for 10 years or 120,000 miles. In my books that seems reasonable. And last I checked, I have not seen anyone else quote prices of extended warranty. At the end of the day everyone has to eat. So if the sales guy had dinner on me, congratulations. but based on my experience with extended warranties across 3 other cars, I always make out. But just for grins and giggles what is the warranty cost that you have seen for 2021 genesis CPO for 10 years 120,000 miles?

Just bought one recently when the original extended warranty expired. Found a third party provider that had a reasonable price for another 4 yrs/100k coverage that’s pretty much the same as the previous extended. In Canada.

Ouch... 4k without CPO was already pretty stiff - but on top of CPO (which you paid extra for that coverage to begin with) - it should have been significantly lower. The CPO already covers your engine, trans and drivetrain to 10/100. Sure - your extended fills a bit of a gap on the other, non-powertrain parts stop on CPO at 75k - but the reality is there is not usually much issue there outside of the clock spring in the steering wheel, the heated seat or the delaminating infotainment screen. The long and short of it is that you paid 4k for a 20k mile warranty on the important stuff. No - I don't mean your sales guy got dinner - I mean the whole damn team.

I was quoted ~2800 through Route66 (120k), 3100 through Endurance (100k) and 3300 through MaxCare (150k) - all on the G90. All of these are non-CPO, btw, on a car with less than 40k on it. And other than Zurich or Fidelity - those are the only 3rd party warranties that are worth a damn. When I had the G80 the HPP warranty was B2B 10/100 on CPO and it only cost me $1200.

Despite the comment about dinner for the team - I am not at all trying to be a wise guy. But am suggesting your experience has been costing you excessively if you are consistently paying 4k for ~100-120k on a CPO. A lot of that money is going to something that is already covered by the warranty you had with the car. On your next buy - maybe talk to your credit union (yes - credit union... if you aren't doing this instead of a traditional bank already, then that's a whole other issue) and see what 3rd party warranty they have. If it is one of the above mentioned (less MaxCare of course) - chances are they are going to be about 25% or more under what the dealer is selling you on for 3rd party. For them it is nothing more than a money making opportunity - and they are fiercely driven to upsell them. Probably half of that 4k went into the cash drawer at the dealership - and likely 1800 or so went to the warranty company.

I literally winced when I read your response... it literally hurt to read. :( EDIT - oh, and paying that much for a Lexus warranty is mind-blowing, as they have the least risk of all when it comes to failures. Their extendeds are historically lower than almost anything else other than Toyota or Honda/Acura.

Srobak, thanks for the detailed response. I read it with an open mind. Let me start off with my Lexus experience and then I will circle back to the extended warranty on the Genesis CPO for my 2021 G90. Regarding the Lexus, people seem to think the car is bullet proof. That may be true for the LS430 - my kid now drives the 2003 LS430. It has 277K on the clock and is going somewhat strong. I have the 2013 LS460 which I bought in 2018. This car is not bullet proof. I forget how long the CPO lasted (maybe 2 years or was it 3?) before the extended warranty kicked in. I think the CPO expired in 2021. The car is covered by the extended warranty until May of 2025. I'm pretty sure I spent $4K for the extended and it has saved me a boat load of money. I don't have details on all of the warranty work that has been covered after the CPO, but it is extensive. Maybe I have a lemon Lexus, but this car is very expensive to maintain. What follows is the work that was done in December 24 and January of 25. The car has 145k miles. All of this work was covered by Warranty (after the CPO expired) and performed at the Lexus Dealership-
  • They had to reseal the engine coolant valley plate because the heater was not working (AC was ice cold). In doing that repair they also had to replace all of the fuel injectors. Total cost was $6,644.51 - All covered by warranty (after CPO expired).
  • Replace left and right hand engine mounts. Cost was $2,998.14. All covered by warranty (after CPO expired).
  • Replace left front shock - leaking - and 1 TPMS (they replaced all 4 in Dec 2023). Cost is roughly $1K.
Those warranty repairs (post CPO) above equal $10.6K dollars. Believe me when I tell you that I have had quite a few other repairs post CPO. So that $4K I spent in 2018 has saved me a significant amount of money. Those are the cold hard facts. It is one of the smartest purchases I have made. You can make an argument that those repairs would cost less at a non dealer. You would be right, but they probably would not have been significantly less and I would not have had a free loaner. When this warranty is up in May of this year, the car may never see a dealer again and I will drive it until the it becomes too expensive to do so. You can be sure I won't spend $6K to fix that valley plate issue if it crops up again.

On to the 2021 CPO Genesis with 38K miles when I purchased in Sept of 2024. The in-service date is December 2020. That means the CPO warranty would end in December of 2026 if my math is correct. I plan on owning this car for as long as possible. So having a warranty that only lasts 2 years doesn't really excite me. I understand that the 2020+ models pretty much had the same interior components with a different exterior. That being said, I don't know if the Genesis is bullet proof. None of the German cars are and based on my experience the Lexus 460 is not either. I read as much as I could on the G90 and I didn't see anything that said they are a money pit, but I also didn't see anything that said they aren't. I suspect these cars are still new and none of us really know. Being a luxury car I expect two things out of this car as it relates to maintenance: 1. It will need maintenance besides the basics (brakes, tires, etc) and 2. It will be expensive. Not as expensive as MB, but not cheap either. With that in mind it made perfect sense for me to buy an extended Genesis warranty for $3.9K. It is extends the warranty to 10 years or 120,000 miles. Since this car is not my primary driver (I don't think I will hit the 120k miles anytime soon), I like the idea of being covered for the mechanical / electrical issues that I strongly suspect will occur before December of 2030. There is no cap on the spending for the repairs (as there is with at least 2 of the reputable 3rd party providers).

So, if your assertion is correct that repairs (minus wear and tear items) on this car through 2029 are minimal, then yes I may have wasted $4K and treated the entire dealership to shrimp and lobster (or in this case Maryland crabcakes). If my experience across 3 different LS Vehicles is somewhat similar with the Genesis, then I will come out ahead. If the Genesis is like other top notch luxury vehicles, then sh*t will happen and if I am unlucky it will happen often. My purchase of the extended warranty was not due to hard sell from the dealership. It was my choice because, I always get a warranty. I have yet to have a warranty not pay for itself. Could I have saved some money if I shopped other Genesis dealers? Maybe, but I was not inclined to call around. 1-stop shopping is pleasant at times. I understand your comments. Now, maybe you understand a little bit better where I am coming from. All the best!

I thought it would be interesting to keep this thread alive with updates regarding service on my vehicle. Just as a reminder I purchased my 2021 G90 in September 2024 as a CPO and I added a Genesis extended warranty on the car. 13 months later (October of this year) the starter died. The car has ~48,000 miles. Genesis had to tow the car from my house to the dealership. Cost to repair - $2,121.50. 100% of cost (tow and repair) covered by CPO. It was also very nice that the dealership delivered a brand new G70 to my house as a loaner. I would have preferred something larger, but oh well. The downside of all of this is that it took them 2 weeks to actually get to the car to diagnose the issue. Additionally they had to order the starter. So I am not sure when I am going to get my car back. Also, the service rep, will not pick up the phone. He only contacts you via text, which irritates the heck out of me.

I will keep this thread alive as I accumulate more CPO / Warranty repairs. Hopefully, though, there wont be many.

Yikes! I wonder what the Genesis dealer would do for me if I needed warranty repair to replace a starter with my nearest dealer being 178-miles away.
That's pretty expensive for a starter R&R. Is yours AWD?

Did you let your auto start/stop do its thing, or did you tend to disable it?

My dealer is about 30 miles away. Twin turbo 6 AWD. I don't know what the auto start / stop feature is on the 2021 G90. I am not even sure if it has that feature.

AWD explains the high starter R&R. A lot has to come out to get to it.

Oh, I thought I'd read before the V6 ones have the auto start/stop, but maybe that's just the current body style. It's that horrible feature that shuts off the engine when you're stopped at a light with your foot on the brake, and starts the engine back up when you take your foot off the brake. If you have that "feature", it's always on by default when you start the car so you'd know if you had it.
