So the time we have all been waiting for has come! I received a letter from HMA stating they are extending my factory warranty on my HECU unit for another five years (unlimited mileage, not the 100,000 mile mark), so that they will inspect and cover the problem with the HECU unit if there is one, and ironically, my brake pedal started showing signs recently, despite having installed new brakes and rotors in the front and back for my 2011 4.6L Genny. So if any of you fellow 09-14 Genny owners are having HECU issues, you should be receiving this letter as well. Thanks to you all for expressing your discontent to HMA of America, as it lit a fire under their rears to make it right for us Genny owners!!!

:welcome: to the forum and congrats on a positive resolution.

You are an original owner, I presume? If so then HMA is moving in a positive direction (a la Toyota) toward better original owner support for known chronic long-term quality issues.

David,

What signs is your break pedal showing?
And what other HECU issues are possible?

I am asking because I also received that letter from HMA the other day. And I am original owner since November 15 2012.

Thanks, Gunkk!!! Yes, I am an original owner. Love, love, love this car and had many others before it, all good, but nothing like our Genny!

Hi AgentSmith007,

It's very spongy, almost goes down to the floor. Put brand new brakes and rotors all the way around, no leaking brake fluid from the brake lines, has to be either Master Cylinder to HECU, but I'm 99% confident it's the HECU, as the issue is no longer intermittent, but consistent. I'd recommend taking it in and DEMAND they check the HECU, if you experience this issue. They'll try to change the brake fluid if it already hasn't been performed under the brake fluid recall, (DOT 4 only, no DOT 3 for our cars), then try to say the it's the master cylinder, but I'm telling you, from what I've read and researched, those are not defective as common as the HECU unit is. It's super expensive, which is why they replace it as a last resort. But glad HMA is realizing a defective product part they put in our Genny's, part is made by Continental (due to putting in DOT 3 instead of DOT 4 brake fluid, which corroded the lines and caused HECU to eventually fail) is not our fault. Way to go HMA!

My break fluid was replaced with DOT 4 back in '13 or '14 under recall service. Dealership also replace cap on the break fluid reservoir that says DOT 4 ONLY this year under service bulletin. I have oil change service on November 3 at the dealership, I will talk to my service advisor.

Digging up this old thread. Is the HECU recall extended to second owners? And is it the full 09-14 line or just 09-12 (I read this somewhere else)? I have a 2014 and am having intermittent brake pedal to the floor issues. 110,000 miles. Brake fluid has never been changed. I just changed the front pads because they were super low. Braking improved for a couple days, then seemed to get worse. I need to do a double tap to get it to brake correctly.

Thank you for this information. I took my 12 Genesis 3.8 to the dealer with the ABS/ESC dash lights illuminating. After a diagnosis of a bad HECU unit and a $3722 repair estimate…I mentioned this to the service technician, he said “one moment please”, typed something into computer and said, “you are correct, and this is the first I’ve heard of this”. They are replacing unit but I have to pay for the brake fluid. Fair enough. Thank you again.

I found a couple relevant documents for the for the HECU warranty extension campaign:

Build dates from 30-Apr-2008 until 28-Mar-2012 are covered, and the 2nd document mentions that dealers can request a pre-approval for "goodwill" accommodation from HMA for those owners like myself with cars not included in the covered date range.
Has anyone gotten a goodwill accommodation for a HECU approved? My 2014 is not covered by the recall and now that my HECU needs replacing (according to the service dept at the dealer) the service rep directly complained to me that he did not want to submit a goodwill request because he didn't think it would go through and it was a lot of paper work for him that he was not getting paid for. I had my pads and rotors replaced 6 weeks ago and was advised by the independent garage (whom I like) that I would have to get the dealer to address the esc and abs warning lights which they could not do. In 6 weeks the abs was apparently engaging and destroyed the new pads rotors and now the calipers too. At this point it looks like I just spent $1100 on the brakes and probably should total the car since the HECU is so expensive without getting any use out of the repair. Frustrating.

Go to the nearest dealer.

How many miles on your 2014 Genesis?

Looks like I'm an official member of the HECU party now (not a party I want to be invited to). My 2014 Genesis 5.0 has been having intermittent braking issues for the past year or two where the pedal will go very soft while braking, unless I pump it one or two times, then it behaves normal.

Replaced the rotors and pads and flushed/bled the fluid 4 months ago. Didn't help much. Last weekend I had the master cylinder replaced and system bled and it completely fixed the problem. However while driving two days later the brakes started locking up - almost like having the parking brake on.

Towed the car to a brake repair shop. They thought there was still air in the system from changing the master cylinder, so they flushed/bled it again (different shop than previously flushed/bled). But they were having a really hard time bleeding the brakes, noting they were locking up still and determined the HECU was bad because of codes: C1360 (MASTER CYLINDER PRESSURE ERROR) C1513 (BRAKE SWITCH CIRCUIT ERROR) C1237 (PRIMARY PRESSURE SENSOR SIGNAL).

The pedal remains very very stiff. Similar to if the car is turned off and I pump the brake pedal. And the car will barely move forward or backward without a LOT of throttle input.

So looking to quickly pick up a part online somewhere since the dealer quoted $4,100 for just the part and didn't have it in stock. I asked them if they could do a goodwill request on the recall. They just looked up the VIN and said it's not part of the recall, and they will not submit a request.

Any suggestions for finding the part for relatively inexpensive? Any has anyone had success getting Hyundai to reimburse for cars outside the recall year range (2009-2012)?

Sorry to hear. I just got a call from the insurance company that they are wanting to "Total" my car following a deer strike last week. Initial damage estimate seems to have more than doubled once examination and parts removed. I can't see the additional $3,600.00 from the pictures. The shop did mention that salvage yards are paying top dollar for these cars(probably shouldn't have mentioned that). The car still drove exactly like it did prior to the deer strike. I have 214,713 miles on the car with the only issue was the TPMS light and I just ordered the Hyundai exact replacements along with everything needed for a transmission pan/filter service. Awaiting a call from the department to have them explain their logic in the next 48 hours. See another thread on this forum for the story. I am on original brakes as well, pads, rotors and fluid.

I'm now a member of the HECU club. 2013 3.8 with 69,000 (yes, only 69,000) miles. The dealer quoted $5200 to repair, but offered to submit the goodwill request right away. I've had no issues with the brakes - just the idiot lights going on. No softness, no locking up, no unusual wear, etc. So, what new car should I consider? An Ioniq? ;-)

Brake boosters are very common.

G-213962, so you believe the brake boosters for the early model Genny's going bad are common? I have not heard of this in the forums.

While the document suggests the possibility of goodwill adjustments, several of the posters here have been turned down by the dealership before it ever got to corporate. That is why I have suggested in this forum that it is a best practice to build a relationship with the service manager. You want him to want to exert the effort for you rather than someone else.

I agree a good relationship is key with the service manager at your dealership, I went thru 3 different service managers in 3.5 years when I reached 100K miles and my warranty ended. I bought my car with 38 miles on it.
