  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So i finally got to the dealer last week for oil change and tire rotation, i had a 1pm appt. and arrived 15min early... They took the car quickly only to find it waiting outside for an hour to be brought into the bay...

Long story short i didn't leave until 3:20 pm... doesn't seem right for a 2.5hr oil change and rotation. I think they forgot about me or something.. Never have i waited that long for simple maintenance... Do our cars require special care to change the oil?

The 5.0 oil/filter change is very tedious & takes me two hours min.

Two large panels under the car have to be removed - in the process - several dozen pushpins & cap screws have to be removed & replaced.

Also, the so-called "cartridge" filter system, much beloved by Hyundai, is time consuming & and tedious to service, if done properly. In addition to a new filter, there are two O-rings that have to be replaced and lubed, and a new "crush washer" placed on the drain plug. Another little tidbit - the filter housing on the V8 is upside down, so you have to drain the filter cap first by removing a cute little "drain bolt". Lastly, 8.5 qts of oil have to be drained and replaced.

The above comments only apply, of course, if the job is done carefully & correctly. There are many posts on the forum detailing the disastrous results from sloppy oil/filter changes.

Appointments are very difficult to honor at an exact time. They don't really know how long all the other cars will take in front of you. They don't even know for sure who will show up for work each day when your appointment is first made. It is sort of like a doctors office, but worse.

Even if you are there first thing in the morning, they may have cars left over from the day before that have not been finished.

A few dealers have a separate oil change operation that is a lot faster than normal service because the techs only work on oil changes, and they have special bays where the techs can get under the car without jacking it up (like an oil change shop). If speed is very important, then you might look for other dealers in town who have such operations.

Sometimes I try to find a dealer close to work, and have them take me to work via their shuttle service, and get someone from work to take me to the dealer at end of day, or maybe lunch time (if done by then). But I do my own changes so I don't go to the dealer very often.

2 hours seems long. I have done about 5 oil changes so fast and it takes me about 35-40 minutes.

I could do the job in 35 minutes also:

If I had the V6 and:

If I excluded the time required to assemble all the tools and materials, jack up the car on both sides, and then do the clean-up and jug the old oil.

Probably even faster time - if I were doing somebody else's car like the mechanics do.

For any type of vehicle service at a dealership, I have found that getting a "first appointment of the morning" usually, but not always, results in timely service. As stated above, there can still be a car left over from uncompleted service the night before.

I have had 3 oil changes at my local Hyundai dealer and have arrived at 7:15 for a 7:30 appointment. I then drink their coffee and look at the new cars ; My Genny has been serviced and washed (free) by 8:00. I couldn't be happier with my dealer's service department for both regular service and warranty work.

Good strategy. Get in and out before all the daily snags wreck the schedule. Just like flying...

Drove to the dealer where we bought the car, about 40 minutes away. Free oil change and free gas card if you leave them a good review. I had no problems with them, and they're mod friendly. Took me close to 2 hours, not too bad.

They offered a free car wash but I passed. No way I'm letting #sarah go through an automated wash. My local dealers suck and makes me nervous...

Interesting. I went to my local dealer (sales side) and it's a collection of kids who couldn't get accepted into community college and wild west cowboys. Service isn't a huge deal to me in a car. I actually like changing my own oil, but my other cars, the dealers give me loaners and make it as easy as possible. I'm considering a V8 Ultimate, but know that service will be a challenge.

The V8 oil/filter change is a tedious job but can be made easier if the oil is suctioned out thru the dipstick tube a la Mercedes style - using a MityVac, or the equivalent.

Yeah, that's unfortunate. I understand under body panels but it should be as easy as possible since that's a frequent service.

thanks for all the comments.. I appreciate it... I wanted to clarify that the car sat for about 45 min to an hour outside before it got brought into the bay.. so it was probably an hour and 1/2 actual work time... I didn't realize the V8 was teteous.. i'll know for next time.. thanks

1. The current tendency is to wrap the top & bottom of engines with panels - My V8 looks like something out of Star Wars. So access is hard.

2. Hyundai uses the so-called "cartridge" type filter arrangement which is tedious, and on the V8, you are working on your back under a 4600 lb car. Unless, of course, you have a nice lift like in Wheeler Dealers.
