  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

First service?

Fuel economy ratings are another factor in the factory oil fill. If a manufacturer can get a slight fuel economy increase with the use of a particular oil, they will do it, if they can. That is what motivated many manufacturers to 0w-20 oil.

I do not care for 0w-20 or 5w-20 oil, especially when it is hot out. I think the oil is too thin when it is hot. I actually have a vehicle that recommended 5w-20 oil. When the engine was hot and at idle I could hear a slight tapping noise from the engine. When I switched to 0w-30 Mobil 1, the problem vanished. I use 0w-30 Mobil 1 in my Genesis V8. It is listed as an acceptable oil in the owner's manual.

I agree that the Hyundai/Shell relationship is about money. Given that Hyundai has to fill the crankcase of about 5 million vehicles per year (that they manufacture), and that requires a lot of motor oil, I assume that they get a discounted price from Shell on the oil in exchange for "recommending" Shell products (which includes QS in the USA).

Since there are no Hyundai's that I know about that specify synthetic oil, I doubt they use synthetic as factory fill.

I think you got everything right on.

A Shell "partnership" to me simply means Shell is putting out a cheap generic for car mfg.'s.

My 2016 Genesis told me it was time for a service at 3000 miles. The service interval in the setup was at 7500 miles. I took it in, the service was done and all was fine. Well, I wanted to know what oil they used so I could get a quart in case I needed it. I don't like to mix different oils (even though I know it doesn't make any difference).

I called the service manager and ask what oil they put in. He said either Shell or QS, but wasn't sure which but I could use either if I needed to add some. In fact, he said I could come by there and they would add some for me free of charge.

That is not the answer I wanted to hear.

Crazy as I am, I changed the oil and filter myself using Mobil 1 5W-30. I will change the oil at 5000 mile intervals. I saved the oil I drained out since it only had about 50 miles on it. I will let a grandson use it in his old truck that leaks a quart about every 500 miles.

So in my case, the dealer didn't know what brand of oil they used. I'm sure they get the best price from a distributor in bulk.

Do it yourself - absolutely the only way to know for sure.
