  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

The first Hyundai for my family was a new 2007 Sante Fe Limited. My wife loves the car and it has not been back to the dealer for any problems but one. The paint peeled off on a place or two which was fixed by the dealer without question. I noticed today the chrome was coming off the Hyundai medallion on the back. I guess what I am saying is that the paint and finish does not seem up to par with what other cars we have bought. The 2007 was the first Santa Fe's to come out of the Birmingham plant to my knowledge. I am wondering about other Hyundais and if they suffer the same poor finish. The concern is there because I have become a fan of the 3.8 Track Coupe. My intent is to buy the yellow simply because it is different for a change than any other color I have had in years.

I seem to remember the Coupes are made in Korea rather than the Birmingham plant. Does that seem to matter? Can you fine folks here tell me if the paint and finish on the coupe seems to last well so far?

It is hard to imagine that over 100 people have read this and have no idea how the finish holds up on a coupe. I don't know if that is good or bad!Anyone?

In terms of the Coupe, I noticed some strange gaps in the headlight area. The driver side had larger gaps then the passenger side. This was also the first ones they rolled out in 2009 so they might be different now. Can't say how it will hold up cause I have a sedan.

At 10 large less than the sedan, I would assume less attention is paid to fit and finish in the Coupe. Coupe owners need to chime in.

I am OCD about detail, fit & performance on all my vehicles, especially when splashing the amount of coin around it takes to stay in a newish vehicle for the wife. I have gone over her new coupe to microscopic level and here are my initial observations...

Finish appears to be on par with anything else out there in the less than 40k range...nice paint and clear coat seems to have texture to it if looked at in light at angle which tells me it could have a better (smoother) clear coat. It seems no better or worse than my Hiroshima built 2003 Mazda P5. Fit of outside body panels is all that could be expected...even gaps and adjoining panels all lined up nice. I am unable to address any concerns about longevity issues since we have only owned the car a month if that long. It is also our 1st Hyundai.

I'm not sure any have been around long enough for us to know what the longevity will be. I will say that in the last 2 years Hyundai has spent fortunes improving their quality. They appear to take a lot of pride in their quality. As a dealer, I receive and sell about 40 new Hyundais a month. I have yet to have a fit and finish problem with a car that I've received this year. All panels line up correctly, no interior imperfections, etc. For reference, (and based on my experience) Nissan, Honda, Toyota have problems in about 2% of cars when received by the dealer. Dodge has about 10% with problems.

Genesis sedans have a better finish, with a thicker clear coat. Coupes have some orange peel, which is evidence a cheap 2 or 3 step paint process. Further, the clear coat is cheap. With that said, it's no worse than any other vehicle under $40k. Nissans have extremely thin paint that chips easily. The Hyundai paint appears to be a little thicker and less prone to chipping.

The Genesis Coups have four problems.

Rear and front bumper alignment.
For some reason the brackets that hold the bumper push the sides out under the lights. you will start to see a separation from the plastic and the rear quarter panel and the front fender just under the headlights. (All on Driver Side)

Some trunks are miss aligned it is a slight adjustment on the camphor. you will see the trunk shifting to the left.

The hood you may notice the right side slightly higher than the left, this is a left shift camphor adjustment is the fix.

How do I know this?

Had them all on mine. The dealer can fix the trunk and hood in the service dept. The bumper problems will have to be done in the dealers body shop they have to remove the bumpers and adjust the brackets.

By what the service Dept manager told me, "this is a known problem but I have never seen a car that had them all until yours."

Nope it still is a problem on the 2010

I have noticed that the speed of hwy pushes the fender well liners out of correct position down at the bottom of the front of the wheel well where they meet the bumper.....because there are no fasteners. It's the air pushing on the front bumper at hwy speed and the bottom corner of the plastic liner gets out from behind the inner edge of the bumper where it wraps into the wheel well. Small stuff but still kinda flimsy IMO.

Had the drvr side gap between hood and headlight on the 2010 too but adjusted the bumpers to get it better myself.

I was at my closest dealer yesterday, and was talking with a guy with a Santa Fe, that is just out of warranty.

He had paint peeling off the front of the hood, front of the roof, and also the "chrome" was peeling off the grill.

Hope our Genesis' hold up better than that.
