In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. We are at 61k miles on our 2015 sedan and unfortunately our rear camera stopped working. The dealer took a look and said the floor wiring harness 'wore out from opening/closing of the trunk' and it will cost $5k to repair. I'm curious if this is bad luck (just out of warranty) or bad design (internal electrical component that broke 5 years in through regular use of the trunk). Has anyone else experienced this problem and does $5k seem reasonable for the repair?

I suspect that a good independent shop could repair the individual failed wires for much less.

Stay away from that dealer at all costs.

If your camera is no longer communicating with the head unit and it truly is a 'wiring harness' issue (as the dealer claims), then I'm 98% certain the problem would be right at the area where the yellow tape is around the wire bundle going up into the trunk hinge arm.

Every time the trunk is opened, that portion of the wiring bundle is straightened out and then returned to that bent position when it's closed. That could eventually break a wire.

Any good automotive electrical specialty shop should be able to splice in a foot of new wires in that bundle in a few hours. Toughest part of this job is getting the trunk panels out. I would splice all wires in that harness since you'd have it opened up.

Did the camera just stop working altogether or did it start acting up and then finally quit for good? Chances are a fraying wire would have given you a couple warnings before quitting completely. If it did just one day quit, I'd suspect the camera as a possibility. I see one site online that has it for $262. Also, it's much easier to get to, only having to remove the trunk lid liner and a few screws.

Sad to think your dealer would rather stick you for a full wiring harness then recommend a much cheaper alternative.

Happened to my 2015 about 2 months ago. The backup camera screen was blue with yellow grid lines. Dealer charged me 225 to repair damaged wires.

That sounds reasonable and the spot is probably where arcman pointed out above. I have to wonder, if you went it with a misfire from a bad plug would they just replace the engine?

Mantronics... $225? That's the kind of dealer we all need.

Thinking about the engineering side of it... Hyundai should have come up with some kind of flat ribbon cable that's made for flexing. Problem solved.

There's a similar set of wires on the left side trunk arm that could be a problem point too.

The techs are great so far at this dealership. Turnersville auto mall in New Jersey. I haven’t felt ripped off yet.😂

And that's half the battle...!

Wow thank you so much for the advice! The tech at the dealership said it was the wiring harness near the trunk hinge as arcman pointed out. The camera started failing intermittently (and I was able to get it back on by opening and closing the trunk) which feels like a wiring issue (as opposed to a camera module issue). Armed with this knowledge, I'm going to see if I can get this fixed for less. Thank you again!

If it was under warranty, then you might well want them to replace the entire harness. That is a valid warranty repair. Since it is not, that doesn't really make any sense. Find someone that will cut out the bad section of wires and then splice in new wires. Even the shielded video cable from the camera can be spliced, if they know what they are doing. Make sure they solder the splices, and make sure that the two splices on each wire are several inches away from where the wire bends/moves. Otherwise, the splices will quickly fail.

Arcman, You were so right. My camera was out, the trunk latch button wouldn't work, and as it turns out, one of the two license plate lights were out. I discovered 5 cut wires right where you said to find them at the yellow tape. I cut about a foot of wire out and used silicone insulated wires as they seem more flexible for this situation. I used butt connectors on both ends of the splice. Everything worked for me in the end. Total material cost was about $20 for the wire.

Thank you.

Good Job! Another happy DIY'er. Glad I could help a bit.

That is awesome that the minor fix worked. I ended up having the entire harness replaced for similar symptoms, trunk button and camera issues. It was a big repair, good to know if it come back out of warranty there is a more reasonable solution.

My issue with Hyundai is; why can't they select cables that are rated for the high abrasion, flex and rated for regional temperatures their vehicles are sold in. For example, attached is the picture of my 2015 Genesis back-up camera cables. Of that wire bunch, 6 were cracked with exposed copper.

Dealing with this very issue today. Brake light on trunk lid went out.
Works when you raise the trunk lid. Bad wire.
Dealer price on a new harness is $2000. Plus labor.
I have an aftermarket warranty that should cover it. $100 co-pay.

Good luck.
Let us know what it goes?

That's pretty illustrative of the problem, too much strain in that area to break them all like that.

Wonder what the cutoff was for them to reroute the trunk wiring. Kind of surprised no TSB or recall, let alone warranty extension as several people here have suffered from this major electrical issue.

@2for1 which area do you live in?
I am trying to figure if this is related to temperature or is it erosion on the wires due to the opening and closing of the trunk over 5 years.

I live in Ontario and my initial understanding was; due to cold temperature, the insulation on this wiring gave up and cracked.
Just trying to make sense of this issue.

Thanks.

The tech working on the car says it looks like the wire bundle got hung up in the spring mechanism nearby.
This car has been in Charlotte for 2 years and the Hampton Roads area for 3. Mostly warm areas
