  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Fob or dead battery issue?

I am starting week 2 of ownership on my 2013 Genesis 5.0 R-spec sedan and so far, it seems to be off to a bad start.

I hopped in my car to go to work this morning and it seems like the battery had died. I pressed the brake pedal and pressed the push-button start and nothing happened. The only thing displaying on the dash was the missing key indicator (and possibly the e-brake indicator). I grabbed the manual and tried pressing the button with the end of the key fob, which gave me more lights on the dash and a slight clicking noise until I pulled the key away. I did this a few times and the engine never turned over.

The first thing I am going to try is to charge the battery when I get home. If that doesn't work, I will take the fob to Autozone and have it tested. If it isn't that, would a battery test and new battery be the next logical step? If so, can I buy any battery from Autozone/Advance/O'Reilly, etc, or does it have to be an OEM battery for the R-Spec's?

Thanks for any advice

Start with the simple stuff, change the battery in the fob. It is a 2022 I believe. Look it up on youtube, easy to do.
The fact that the car is not recognizing the fob makes that the likely culprit in my opinion.

The missing key indicator would make me think it is the fob battery. I'd invest $4 in a new battery.
Next step is the car battery. The clicking is often the solenoid trying but failing to engage the starter from lack of power. Your car is about 8 years old. If it is the second battery in there, it is about the time then normally fail. Many have a tag with the month and year installed. If in the four year range, just replace it.

Check the ma ual for what is needed. Doubt it has to be OEM.

I started out doing the simple things, but here is an update. I replaced the key fob battery and it still didn't allow the car to start.

When I got home from work, I was able to start the car using my charger's jumping feature. I left the car on a 2a trickle charge for about 6 hours last night, then unplugged it before bed. When I woke up this morning to go to work, the battery was too depleted to start the car. I had dash lights and it clicked a little more rapidly than yesterday, it was close to turning over at first.

I took it to Advance this morning and had them test the battery with it still hooked up to the car. It tested good. I replaced the battery with a new one, since the original one from 2013 was still in the car. I had them run a load test on it and it tested as still being good.

I'm going to search the forum for battery draw issues, but if there is anything I should look for immediately, please let me know.

I don't care what they told you about the battery testing good, from 2013 is well out of the norm. Most last 4 to 5 years. If it was good, your car would have started.

I was having similar issues and my battery tested great at Interstate Battery. The damn battery wouldn't even hold a charge very long, so I told them I wanted a new battery regardless of what their test showed. A new battery fixed my problem - mine was 10 years old.

I guess we will see tomorrow morning  I pray it's just the battery, it definitely seems like every other battery issue I've ever had.

If it’s not the car battery, make sure the battery in your key fob is a good quality battery, I put some brand new cheap eBay battery and the car would never sense the remote, I switched it to a name branded one and then problem solved for me.
