  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Howdy all.

I have a friend who looked at a Genesis today and was quite impressed. Since he thinks I'm some sort of geek (I hang at a couple of other groups) he asked if I'd check on this car. So here goes.

What questions to ask the salesperson?

What options to avoid or get?

One engine better than another?

Extended warranty, yes/no?

When you bought yours what did you compare it to?

And why did you pick the Hyundai?

Anyone from the San Francisco bay area, and if so do you recommend a dealer?

And on it goes. You get the drill.

The car is actually for his wife, she was along, who liked the car also. Any SUV is out of the question apparently.

So there you have it. All I can think of for now. Of course all comments appreciated.

Thanks much,

Don

DynoDon, you're a good friend but each one of those questions is quite subjective and there are probably 5+ threads discussing each one in length.

I'll answer one of the questions for you though:

Why did you choose Hyundai/Genesis? Sheer value compared to its competitors plain and simple.

Does your friend not have a computer?

After posting I did find a good long thread on what troubles folks have had. Seems various electrical gremlins are the issue I saw most. The majority of people seem quite pleased with both the car and their dealer. With the occasional bad apple.

Yes he has a computer but uses it rarely. Wife uses it for email and some surfing but they seem to afraid of the thing. Helloooo, it's not an alien. One wrong click and it might bow up or something.

I'll send them the link and see if I can guide them over the phone. If I can get them them on the same page as me, literally, it should work.

Thanks,

Don

What options to avoid or get? Nothing specific. Just what suits them. Navigation (touchscreen or non), ultra premium leather, 17 speaker stereo system, smart cruise control, etc... they're all nice features to have if they'll be used/appreciated.

One engine better than another? "Better?" Nah. If they'll use the extra horses and won't mind the extra coin (and lower fuel mileage), go for the V8. If not and they will, then don't.

Extended warranty, yes/no? How long will they keep the car? If a long time (6+ years), then certainly consider the extended warranty -- but don't pay too much of a premium on it.

When you bought yours what did you compare it to? Pretty much all midsize/fullsize sedans ~$25k-$40k.

And why did you pick the Hyundai? Features, looks, value, uniqueness factor, awards, second-hand availability in close proximity.

Anyone from the San Francisco bay area, and if so do you recommend a dealer? South bay-er here. We're at Capitol Hyundai | Suzuki | Volkswagen. Nothing remarkable to report one way or another, which is probably a good thing.

Just my thoughts.

What questions to ask the salesperson?

Do you work off commission? If so, find another dealer or tell him that you are not their to support his family for a month. A few days...maybe.

What options to avoid or get?

Thats personal...If it were me, Id go all in!

One engine better than another?

There again, thats personal. Personally, I am partial to the V8. There is no other car out their that offers the option at such a LOW price in a RWD car. The Impala SS would with its 5.3, but its a FWD with hellacious torque steer. Gas mileage is not but 2-3 mpg worse than the V6. Ill cruise at 80 all day and get 24-26 MPG. Plus the extra ponies are wonderful!

Extended warranty, yes/no?

YES YES YES! However, like another poster said, do NOT pay a premium. I think mine was $900 or so. Before I added this option, I went to the service dept and asked what it costs in general to dig into the DIS system. He said just to crack it open it is nearly $2000. The extended warranty is B to B for 100K or 10 Years. And only get it if you plan to keep the car. Im not sure if the warranty is transferable.

When you bought yours what did you compare it to?

Acura TL, Lincoln MKZ, Lexus IS350, Lexus ES350, BMW 5 series, Toyota Avalon.

I was signing the papers for the Lexus ES350, decked out at $53K (if I remember correctly), when Hyundai called and said he had a V8 rolling off the truck. I walked away from the signing to test drive the car. I drove away from Hyundai with nearly $15K in my pocket and MORE car than the ES350 could ever offer.

It was common sense.

And why did you pick the Hyundai?

Bang for the buck, a cheap V8 option, cool gizmos and gadgets, a sporty ride, and the way people look at you...especially when you have the winged badges installed. Its fun to watch all these people with more money than sense spend BIG BUCKS on a name and wish their car had the power, the look, the value and the prestige as a badged out Genesis has. To each his own though.

Tell you what though, with the money I saved, I purchased a $7K cedar fence, a $2000 Plasma TV, $1900 BOSE Lifestyle Home theatre system, I completed my "man room," a complete set of Nike Victory Red blades, a Cobra S2 driver, a couple of Scotty Cameron Putters, a HD Video camera...and an irrigation system for my yard...not to mention what all I have purchased for my wife.

I cant fathom not having all these goodies because I wanted to buy a Name.

Anywho, just shop smart and SPEND WISELY! ;)

What questions to ask the salesperson?
Generally, you should know everything you can about the car already. Its features, options, common problems, etc. Then, ask the salesperson and see what he says - if he gives you correct answers or turns conversations into "what an you pay" questions, you'll know what kind of salesperson you're dealing with. In general, you shouldn't rely on a salesperson for info - they're motivated to sell you a car more than anything, and that can cloud their honesty imo.

What options to avoid or get?
I don't think there's anything to avoid. The Genesis comes pretty much loaded with a few upgrade packages. When I got mine, I wanted a sunroof and HIDs, but no Nav, so I went with the premium package only, and added HIDs later. The Tech package was only $1k more for me though, so its not much money to upgrade.

One engine better than another?
Both engines seem excellent - it depends on what you want really. The V8 has good pulling power and you feel it at highway speeds, the V6 is lighter and has more aggressive transmission gearing, so it feels spritelier and gets a tiny bit better mpg.

Extended warranty, yes/no?
Depends on how long you plan to keep the car. I think you can buy an extended warranty any time within the normal 5 year B2B warranty.

When you bought yours what did you compare it to?
I think this is a key question, since the Genesis is compared to such a wide array of vehicles. For me it was the G37, M35/45, GS, Subaru Legacy, A6, C/E Class... Sportier sedans with some poshness. The Genesis offered S Class size with E Class power at a C Class price for me.

And why did you pick the Hyundai?
Great amenities, great price, great value, plus I have a growing pool of friends that have had Hyundais for years with no major problems or reliability issues. It also looks really good and is rwd.

Thanks all for replying. 'preciate it!

Howdy all,

My friend ended up buying an '09 dealer exec car with something like 9k miles. So far he's a happy camper.

Anyway, it's unlikely I'll ever be back here so if an admin wants to delete me and this thread that's OK with me.

Thanks for the visit. :)

Don
