Hi guys & gals,

I owned 5 mustang gts, I always been american muscle car guy. I openly admit the mustang is a pig around corners. If you can keep the thread less flaming the mustang and more on what to expect. this is my second foreign car, first new foreign car.

What can I expect in performance and ride between the mustang ( in my case 2008 Mustang GT/CS ) and a 3.8 v6 Genesis Coupe? 0 to 60 power, curves, what cars cant i win from with or without a turbocharger

Any good places on learning how to drive my car better? Like taking curves in the Coupe, Do's and donts. Best mounted windshield radar for the car, best radar and laser jammer. Any X-Mustang owners care to share their experiences.

I live in atlanta, If any good drivers would like to take me out and help me learn how to drive the car ( i.e. push it to the limits ) it would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Paul

Well Paul, I am not a former mustang owner but have driven a few and have owned a Z28 and Lincoln MkViii and currently own a 97 Camaro RS, So rear drive performance is what I am used to driving.

What you will notice in the Genesis Coupe is the how the width of the car balanced with the less nose heavy V6 and overall less curb weight, makes a huge difference with the cornering, also the rear tires track wider than the fronts allowing for a quicker turns into corners.

I have the 2.0t and have driven the 3.8 and I feel you can throw the 2.0T around a little more in the corners due to the slightly lighter nose. Also the V6 has allot more torque and may lend to that slight understeer push from the back end.

I mounted my radar detector to the right of the rear view mirror and ran a switched power cable up from the drivers side fuse box, I "fuse tapped the power from the heated seats which is an option I do not have; but the circuit is active. I grounded to the dash brace right by the fuse box. The location is nice and out of the way for the driver and is low enough for the rear sensor to "see" out the rear window and is visible just below the rear view.

As far a the Mustang goes I still think that it has the finest stock exhaust note ever, I still turn and look when I here that distinctive tone no matter if it is a 1984 LX v8 or a brand new GT.

Enjoy your ride...

Welcome aboard, Paul! Thank you for signing up and congratulations on your new Hyundai Genesis Coupe!

Really, the only jhandling problem with S197 Mustangs is the stock springs and shocks, which are flipping awful. I swapped them out with Saleen springs and Tokico blue struts/shocks, and the difference is mind-blowing. Little bit of oversteer at the limit, zero body roll, razor-sharp turn-in, nice ride.

That said, I'm getting the impression next year's birthday present to myself will be trading mine in on a 2.0T.

Edit: Oh, and the stock shifter. It is unbelievably awful.

thanks guys, I am slowly getting used to driving the v6. handling is a lot better, stopping is freaking incredible, I already had some one weave into my lane and i had to dodge, I avoided the accident really well. I do not think the mustang could have dodged it that well.

On radar detectors I had one professionally installed, I ended up getting an escort 9500ix with laser jammers installed before the weekend. Due to the fine state of georgia being cash strapped, they are heavily taxing speeders. Huge difference in 'getting caught speeding'. I only had one pull over because I was a noob at jamming and left it on jamming his laser past him, and he had a good sense of humor and let me go without even a warning, then immediately nailed another car.

the car seat is taking some time to adjust just right to me. pinches my lower back a bit, I am going to go to the dealer and have them help me adjust it just right for me.

well i am a mustangs owner as well from the GT to the SC saleen extreme and guess what, i just bough a genesis V6..
comparing to the mustang GT you will be surprised, the car is lighter and has a good quick. it feel less stable steering wise and a little bit more f"floating" that the mustang GT specifically if you have a new one (05- and above) but the conform is better and breaking feel better. the only thing i miss from the mustang when i drive the genesis is the exhaust rumbling. it is hard to match a set of slp loudmouth exhaust sound on the V8.
i did change my genesis exhaust after trying different type and settle for the HKS legamax. it is not as the SLP by far but the sound is way better than the original one and you get that small downshifting rumbling... the only way to get a better sound would be to remove the last portion of your exhaust and do straing pipe from the catbacl to the rear end of the car but them it is too loud for daily commute.
now comparing the genesis to my saleen SC would not be fair. althrough the saleen is also very heavy, the 550+ hps generated are not comparable to a regular genesis V6.
why did i get a genesis?
commuting everyday 120 miles to go to work. the saleen was not a car for that type of transist (netheir the fuel consumption LOL)
any other questions contact me back...

i just traded my 05 mustang that i have had for three year i will admit the genesis doesnt have the get up and go but it rides so much better and can handle alot better and it beats not getting 22 mpg. i liked my mustang but i would trade my genesis for one cant beat the price for what you get even the 3.8 track is a good deal. by the way i have a 2.0t track

Lots easier to mod the Mustang than a Hyundai. Having said that, The GC is alot more car for the money. You will not regret your dicision by going with the GC.

I'm hoping that they put the turbo from the new Sonata in the GC.

Here's an article on MT that compares The Camaro, Mustang, Challenger, and Genesis. The point of the article is to compare V6 models. Since you are considering a Genesis I assume you don't have a problem with not being able to get a V8 so I think its worth the read. Its not just a comparison of specs, but also a comparison on feel and fun factor so it's a little subjective, but I think theres also a lot of subjectivity when buying a car, other wise, the best spec car will always get 100% market share.

My favorite quote from the article:
"Sure, the Mustang may make the value proposition, but for the extra bit of dough, I'd rather have the Genesis. It's just more fun to drive."

haha.. spending extra money to get a Hyundai. I honestly can say that's one of the newer lines I've heard, oh how times have changed!

The interesting thing is how they attribute the slight edge in handling, of the Genesis, to it's increased camber, allowed by special camber bolts.

"The secret? Part number 00118-2M001. Cost? Brace yourself -- $30 big ones. Okay, we're talking about port-installed camber bolts -- they're standard with the racy 2.0T R-Spec -- that increase front camber from 0.5 to 2.1 degrees."

I imagine you could do a similar cheap mod to the Mustang.

It is also interesting that they fault the Mustang for it's interior, but mention that you can get the upgraded interior with the Premium Package for $3700...still leaving the Mustang $2300 less than the Genesis coupe.

I am amazed what a value the Mustang is, at $6000 less than the Genny coupe. If anyone had said an American built car would be a better value than a Hyundai a few years ago I would have laughed.

Here is another review of the Mustang that mentions the Genesis coupe as it's most worthy adversary.

http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/review-2011-ford-mustang-v6/

"...I suspect the real target of this stalking horse is the Hyundai Genesis.

The Genesis has proven to be rather popular with young people who don’t much care for the eight-cylinder engine and its attendant social baggage. It’s the ponycar for the twenty-first century, as important to some people as the original Mustang was in 1964. Except, of course, for the fact that this new Mustang is superior in virtually every respect, from interior quality to high-speed handling."

Does not take much to get the Mustang to handle well. With just springs & fat tires, my Cobra handles pretty damn well.

I am not giving up Mustangs for the GC. GC is my DD. Cobra is my fun car.

The Genesis is roughly equivalent to a Mustang V6. Arguably the track package would have the Genesis with a few better pieces than the Mustang V6 has. The 2011 Mustang V6 on paper is very similar under the hood, tests show it a bit stronger. Early Mustang V6s are much weaker. The Mustang v8 is much stronger.

The direct injection engines will bump all the numbers up. Neither has them yet, but it Hyundai appears to be a bit ahead here...maybe a couple of years.

I almost bought a Mustang GT/CS a few years ago. Wanted a White One but could not get a deal on a White CS, so I passed. (Would have been a nice toy).

I switched from a 03 gt, to a 2010 3.8 coupe. The car is saving me a good bit of money in gas, while still have power when you need it. I just recently bought an exhaust and can't wait to put it on. I will always miss the sound of the Mustang, however i feel the money i save in gas beats the sound i had with the stang.
