Front Camera?

Well this is interesting!!

I just downloaded the manual for the Touchscreen Navigation system from HMAservice site. It also contains a lot of info about phone, voice activation, the sound system, and the display...

I was very surprised/intrigued to see information about operating the front camera. It's in the last page(s) just before the Appendix around page 90/91.

First I've heard of it. Can anyone confirm/deny?

Perhaps it's a typo from the KDM spec vehicle?

(note there's a diagram I can't copy/paste here that makes reference to a "BLIND" button??)

About the Front Camera
-This system has been equipped with a front camera when driving at low speeds (under 10km/h) for a wider left/right range of vision.
-The front camera will operate automatically when the ignition KEY is turned ON and the button has been pressed except when the transmission lever is positioned to P or R.

Operating sequence of the Front Camera
-Position the ignition key onto ACC or ON.
-Turn ON the button. (this is where it refers to a 'blind' button)
-Except when the transmission lever is set to P or R, the front camera mode will turn on in accordance to the vehicle speed.

And in kind, might I say in all Canadian humility, you're of course right as usual...only the drivers down there would require a front camera.

To get back to your question, the Front Camera is apparently a home market (Asia) option only. It is mentioned in my manual also with the notation "if fitted" .

Actually it is in the middle eastern market as well, but definitely not in N. America.

My gut tells me this feature will make it on the North American spec Genesis for 2011, along w/ the obvious addition of integrated exhaust tips and a bit of chrome trim along the inner edge of the lower air damn ala Equus. If you look closely at the spy shots, the grille looks exactly the same with the exception of the center vertical slat which appears to stick out ever so slightly leading me to believe that Hyundai has integrated a camera like the Equus. I mean, they're definitely concealing it for a reason.

The coverings are put on preproduction cars mostly to break up cars silhouettes, griiles, etc. so car magazines will have to do some serious SWAGging to figure out the exact car design (and maximize the surprise factor for potential customers). That piece covering part of the grille is probably more to shield the overall grill design than just covering a potential front-mounted camera.

IMHO, I think a front mounted camera is probably less practical than a rear mounted one as a front-mounted camera would tend get to become dirtier from constantly being bombarded with dirt and bugs, not to mention the greater possibility of breakage from hitting a rock.

I thought about the exact same thing. But I'd still prefer to have it as an option.
If Hyundai is smart enough, they might have used some sort of shatter-proof housing for the front camera.

I read somewhere that our head units(tech package) have a connector for the front camera. I wonder if retro-fitting the camera would work. Of course the "blind" switch must be connected as well.
Just wondering if it's just a matter of installing and connecting components or if it also involves S/W configuration.

While it would be nice to have just to have it, I really can't see me using it more than a couple times a year. I live in the 'burbs and work in an area where there are not a lot of tall buildings in tight quarters or other obstacles (besides other cars). In the inner city I could see it being used more, but it certainly is not an option I'd pay anything for. I do like that exhaust though!

IIRC, the camera is not just for seeing straight ahead during tight parking maneuvers, it also provides a view to either side of the car at the front.

For instance, lets say you are pulling out onto a busy street w/ fast moving traffic, since this camera is mounted at the front of the car a few feet ahead of your seating position, the camera should be able to provide you with a view of the street without having to pull all the way into the intersection in order to for you (e.g. the driver) to see around a building or other such visual obstruction.

Edit: Nevermind, it would seem such a feature is not available. Too bad really, as I would find that very useful.

Isn't the camera used, in the Equus, for the lane drift alert feature? It watches the lane markers and alerts you if you drift outside your lane. It can also be used for dynamic cruise control and automatic braking.

I'm pretty sure the lane assistance feature has cameras/sensors mounted in the side view mirrors. I know for a fact that it tugs at your seat belt gently if you drift out of your lane and shows a graphic on the center gauge display to let you know if you've drifted too far to the right or left.
