If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Front turn signal bulb out 4 times

This looks like a manufacturing design defect to me, and is clearly a safety issue if one cannot properly use turn signals when turning. Therefore, I would have everyone who has experienced this problem go to the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website and file a complaint so that they will force Hyundai to do a recall.

It only takes a couple of minutes to file a complaint here:

It is not a design defect. Many GM cars did the same and used the turn signal bulb as the DRL which would burn out quickly as they are using the short life, high brightness filament of the turn signal bulb for the DRL light. (see my post on the bottom of page 1 for more info)

You can certainly complain, but replacing a bulb is considered routine maintenance.

only file complaints to NHTSA that are safety concerns.

I am empathetic to your issue of having to replace bulbs often, but at least it is covered by the bumper to bumper initially, and after that a 2 pack of bulbs are $5-10 and about 15 minutes of time to replace.

I have had cars where the DRL's are the Halogen/incandescent headlights, and had to replace those every 2 years, but those were $30 - $40 for a pair of higher output Philips bulbs (the long life headlight bulbs are terribly yellow to achieve that long life they do not run at optimum lumen output either), and they were not easy to get to with access by removing the bumper which was the official way, (or unofficially pulling back the fender liners after popping out 10 pins or so per side and contorting your arm to reach them)

I have been working as a lighting engineer for over 30 years, and was one of the first to use LEDs as an illumination source (not as an indicator lamp) in a safety product 27 years ago.

I appreciate your point of view, but IMO, it is a design defect because the bulbs burn out too quickly when sharing turn signal and DRL. There may also be some voltage issues causing the bulbs to burn out. It was obviously a problem, and Hyundai changed the design the very next model year (2016).

IMO this is clearly a safety issue because invariably drivers are not going to notice the burned out bulb right away, and they will think they are signally a turn to safely warn others of their intensions, when in fact they cannot due so because of the burned out bulb.

Hyundai was forced to do a recall when the brake lights burned out too quickly due to choosing an improper diode in the circuit. The bulbs did not burn out nearly as fast as the turn signals on the 2015, but many Hyundai cars were recalled anyway (quite a few different Hyundai models and model years).

Hyundai did another official recall for the Genesis G1 brake lights coming on too often, when the brake pedal was barely touched by the driver's foot, but not actually pressed hard enough to cause the brake pads to touch the rotors and start slowing the car. It was determined by the NHTSA that this was a safety issue also, because drivers behind the Genesis started ignoring the Genesis brake lights, since they were often on when the car was not even slowing down.

The final decision is be made by NHTSA as to whether it is a safety defect worthy of a recall (unless Hyundai voluntarily does the recall itself).

Just so you know, I don't own a 2015, so my Genesis is not affected, but I think I know a safety issue when I see one.

I was just about to post this as I've swapped 4 bulbs in 1 year (~8k miles). Has anyone used an LED replacement? I've seen a lot of supposed drop in replacements that have the correct resistors etc so they are detected correctly but I've also heard some of the aftermarket LEDs out there wash out in the sun too.

Anyone use some that they are happy with?

I would file a safety complaint with the NHTSA, so that hopefully a recall be done to upgrade the 2015 turn signal design with the changes made to the 2016 model.

I just noticed my passenger turn signal stopped working a few weeks ago. I could tell from the rapid turn signal noise and reflection in the window that is was longer working.. Guess a trip to Autozone this weekend. Are they easy to change out? Anyone have a part number.. Maybe cheaper on Amazon..

Done. Thanks.

This makes 5th burnout in 2 years

Stop using .25 cent China made bulbs and they'll last longer. You get what you pay for. Direct plugin replacement LEDs are also available. Anyone that contacts the NTSB because their cheap turn signal bulbs burn out should be slapped.

There is obviously some electrical problem with the car. I have never replaced a turn signal lamp in my entire life, nor ever heard of anyone who had to. This only started with the 2015 model, and they changed the design for 2016 (because it was a bad design).

I've replaced dozens of turn signal bulbs in the last 40 years. It's common enough that at least since the early 70's all vehicles signal indicators will flash faster when a bulb is burnt out as an indicator to the driver it needs to be replaced. Our Genny's are the same. The real culprit is that the bulb does double duty acting as a daytime running light burning the hours of its usable life sooner than vehicles with no daytime running lights.

Wondering if anyone has done this mod recently?
I tried to make a "NEW" post, so there would be some "NEW/up to date" info, but for some reason it didn't go through...

All of the links in this thread are dead/bad.

I've googled for 'switchback LED 1157" and come up with a few places selling them...but not sure if they'll work.

Just wanting to pick the Forums brain for some current info.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

Agree with that. My left was replace at 23 months and 38000 miles. While trivial in the scheme of life, it is the first auto bulb I'd had to replace in at least 12 years. I really get annoyed when people don't use turn signals so I don't want to be one of them.

Have a 2015 5.0. Today the R turn signal quit. I called the dealership on the extreme outside chance it would be covered under the bumper to bumper part of the warranty. Of course, not the case. However, they told me this was a known problem with a short somewhere burning out the bulbs. So they are going to replace the wiring harness ( and while they're at it the bulb ) under warranty. Glad I called.

Any updates on this? Thanks in advance.

Yes, in fact I started another thread to bring attention about it to folks having this problem. The dealership put in a new harness & replaced the burned out bulb. I asked if they could be pro active and replace everything on the other side. Was told they can only do it when the bulb has burned out.

Thank You Tucker for answering so quickly! I really appreciate it. I'm taking my genesis in tomorrow. (Noticed that you are from Texas) I'm from Houston, hopefully they do the same for this issue. I will see if they are able to change both of mine out and be pro active like you said. Thanks again.

Just an update for everyone. The dealership replaced both of my turn signal bulbs free of charge since I was able to show them the slightly blacked harness(from excessive heat) however they said they will look more into replacing the entire unit if my two new bulbs go out again in a few months or so. There is a problem with the 2015 in terms of the turn signal harness and using the turn signal bulb as both a DRL and turn signal, however it was address and changed for the 2016 model hence the LED strip light working as intended for DRL and the turn signal bulb used for only turn signal purposes. I wish there was an easy fix to get my LED strip working as a DRL and the Auto headlight function working properly.

On our cars, it should be possible to move to LED with no issues other than what color you would want. Adapters used to be necessary on older cars to flash LEDs.

Not true. I tried LEDs and they flashed continuously. I have a 2015 Genesis Sedan 5.0.
