If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. I have had my 2011 Genesis 4.6 about 6 weeks (1500 miles) now.

EVERY time I refuel, the gasoline overflows out of the filler tube when the pump shuts off. I have tried manually slowing the flow when I think it is nearly full, but that does not help. We then have a gasoline smell for some time. I have never had this happen with any other vehicle.

Is this "normal" for the Genesis?
Has anyone had this problem and had it fixed? What did they do to fix it?

Otherwise we REALLY LOVE the car.

Thanks.

I have a 2010 and do not have this problem.

I have a 2011 4.6 and have never had this problem. Used gas Stations from Minnesota to Florida.

Have you tried different gas stations?

2011 4.6 (4600 miles) No problem here either. I've used gas stations from PA, all around MD/DC/VA and down to NC...

I have heard that before where extreme outside temps can cause this, especially if your re-filling an empty tank, and/or if the gas stations pump is pumping too fast and it's own shut off mechanism is not shutting down properly. I would try another station as well as re-filling before it's near empty. Other than that talk to your dealer, but she may tell you your just not putting the nozzel all the way in.

That's not normal at all. If it happens at any gas station/pump, let the dealer look at the fuel filler neck and the vent line.

I have a V6 and have never had this happen. I agree with those that think it could be the pump.

2nd fillup tonight, and I noticed driving home a strong fuel smell. I just got a used 2011 with 4800 miles on it (wonderful car). I'll let you know if it happens again.

While I don't have any gas smell after filling up, I dread fueling my 3.8 Genesis. The pump (no matter the gas station) shuts off prematurely and I must slowly add fuel until full. If empty, for example, it might shut off at the 15-gallon mark and it's necessary to struggle for 10 minutes to add the balance. In fact, I think there was a thread on this subject about a year ago.

I Still have and intermittent problem to this day. I have pretty much learned to live with it cause I like the car so much. I also mostly visit the service stations near my home with fuel nozzles with small holes located on the tube end that inserts into the Genesis fuel filler tube. This type never has cut off prematurely.

When fueling at stations that don't have fuel nozzles with the small holes located on the end. I find if I hold the nozzle slightly tilted allowing air in the filler tube and the fuel trigger at something less than full flow I might be able to fill the tank without a premature cutoff.

Stoofpilot, I have this problem on my Genesis. EVERY time I fill up, the gas overflows. And I can't stop it by slowing/stopping it manually when I hear it nearly full. At first, it only happened at certain stations. It has gotten worse, and happens ALL THE TIME now. My dealer doesn't have a clue. Clearly something is wrong, but I don't know what.

Did you ever get your problem resolved? Thanks!

Still no problems with filling my 2010 4.6.

Sorry Stoofpilot, I meant to address my question to tdarlington.

While I have never had this problem myself, it sounds like you may have a clogged vent or maybe a kink in the vent hose. It sounds like the tank can't vent the air fast enough and is backing up through the filler neck.

If it happens every time, I would bring it to the dealer and have them try to fill it up. I would explain to them that spilling gas is an environmental issue, and it is in their best interest to fix this. Usually, if they can recreate the problem, they can fix it.

Capt Steve, thanks, but I think it's not a vent - there's no problem pushing fuel into the tank, this just happens when the fuel flow stops. Another forum member said Hyundai thinks it's a valve in the filler neck. I'll be following up again with my dealer.

I finally took the car to the dealer about this problem. The fuel would overflow out of the filler EVERY time the tank became full. It is my wifes car and she would just add like 10 gallons when she filled it to keep it from overflowing. The other day she miscalculated and got gasoline on her clothes. I figured enough was enough.

The dealer had no clue but called Hyundai and they said it was a bad check valve in the fuel filler neck (bad from the car being brand new). The part was ordered and installed today. The dealer claimed to have checked if they fixed it by filling it with gas (only about $10). They even charged me for the gas plus sales tax on top of it!!! When we drove it home the fuel gauge indicated 1/2 full. Kind of hard for them to check it if the car was still only 1/2 full !!! Anyway we stopped at a gas station and low and behold it DID NOT overflow when it reached a full tank !!! So in fact they did fix it.

I drive a Lexus, my wife used to drive an Infiniti and my daughter a VW Beetle Conv. I was quite disappointed in the Hyundai service experience (my first visit). I know it would not measure up to Lexus & Infiniti, but I was hoping it would be comparable to VW. OH NO !!! They did not even wash the car either visit. Even the VW dealer washes the car every visit. FYI I am in Florida and it was 50-70 on both visits. Plus to charge me for the gas (plus extra tax on top) for a warranty visit and have the car still only be half full, I guess you get what you pay for. The car itself is wonderful for the money.

Initial quality nothing like Japanese vehicles though. Both the fuel filler problem and a problem with the automatic seat positioner memory from the factory. Even my daughter's VW which has had numerous problems since had no initial problems.

We will see if I get another Hyundai, maybe it is worth the extra $10-20K for an Audi/Bmw/Mercedes/Infiniti/Lexus. Certainly a night and day better service experience (and I though my Lexus dealer's service was bad). I was originally planning on getting the Equus, but between the lack of the 5.0 engine and the refusal to discount even a demo car, we got the Genesis with a huge discount (this was in April 2011).

Guess it comes as a surprise to a Lexus owner that most dealers do not wash cars when you get them serviced.
