  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Owners manual lists it. And also page 3 in this forum. quick search always solves quick answers 😃

My owner's manual doesn't have it plus it doesn't even have a maintenance schedule . Not sure what kind of manual I have . Oh well .

The answer is 91 octane recommended. With a warning that performance and mileage (mpg) will be worse with 87. The latter is technically not a recommendation, but perhaps giving allowance for not being able to find Premium.

Thanks Ottawa , just a little confusing, ran my 2020 g80 sport 3.3 on regular and the car flew .

87 works fine, totally safe for the engine. People are delusional if they think they are getting performance and fuel economy that outweighs the extra cost of 91+

This is very interesting 🤔 , I guess it depends on how one feels and their experience . Compromise, maybe the mid grade .

Well my old old Forester turbo said 91 octane and don't use 87. I think one of the current Mazdas quotes performance and consumption for both 91 and 87. And the GV70 recommends 91 and says inferior results with 87.

The only one I wouldn't put 87 in is the old Forester, and I think it's true to say that "Genesis only recommends using 91 in the GV70", which is technically different from "Genesis recommends using only 91 in the GV70".

But I'm not an expert by any means.

The GV80 manual with the same engine says the engine is fine with 87 but for better performance to use a higher octane.

Check to see you have the proper manuals. Most Genesis come with a few of them, the pain manual being about 500+ pages. Fuel and maintenance are in there.

You may find it easier to download the manuals.

We have owned a G80, a Panamera and other Audis and Lexus vehicles. I used regular in every one of them and never noticed a knock or any other problems. If u have a GV70 3.5T as I do the manual recommends premium gas. I will use regular. I’ve never talked to a service technician in any garage that has told me there will be problems with regular.

Modern computer controlled engines compensate for that. You are saving money but may be giving up some performance. Engineers spent a lot of time figuring out what is best, thus the recommendation.

My 05 Forester said "must use 91+". The GV70 recommends 91 and says you'll get inferior performance and increased consumption with lower, which is not the same thing. I'm guessing one could Try 91, 89, 87, and see what costs the least and feels the best.

I wish they could publish an actual rating for 87 which would make the cost calculation easier (I think Mazda does with the CX-5?, both consumption and performance).

Fruther to EdP's comment, presumably a 2005 turbo wasn't connected to the amount of intelligence that a 2022 turbo is. Maybe Cobb could have produced an 87 map for their Accessport for my Forester, but who would want it? :) Maybe in 2008 when gas prices were >$4/USG even in NJ.

I agree that I might be giving up some performance and if I was on a race track I’d be concerned about that but with this engine there is a lot of performance available. Not really questioning the engineers recommendation but the cost difference is also a point to be considered by some.

I've decided I'm using premium in my 3.5. Premium costs .40 cents per gallon more than regular where I live if you check different brands of gas station pricing.

Buying a luxury vehicle comes with extra costs, hopefully after the warranty of free oil changes the maintenance expense won't be outrageous. My Porsche Macan was.

I fully understand your reasoning. My wife went through a Boxster, Boxster S, 911 Carrera and a Z4. She used premium in most of them.

your right ,,,by seat of your pants never know the difference

I tested with both 87 and 91 in my G70 3.3T and there was no overall performance difference as measured with a Dragy. My fastest time was actually with 87 but on average they were pretty much the same. I think in high ambient temperatures, the 91 will be better because it reduces heat induced knock.

Bottom line, 87 is fine.
