Traded in my 2021 BMW 430ix that requires 91-93 and was shocked when my sales rep said she puts regular in her’s with no problem. I just figured all forced induction engines really need the easy detonation to perform. The bimmer always got 40+ on the interstate at 80mph which made my cost per mile less than my Palisade with regular at 26 mpg. It was also snappy 5.3 zero to sixty and just a blast to drive.
It’s my work car and I put 1600 to 1700 gallons a year in it. It’s .65$ per gallon extra for premium so do the math.
When I bought it yesterday they filled it up with 89 oct…go figure. I’ll have plenty of tanks to experiment with but not until after the first oil change. If it doesn’t hurt the engine I’ll play with all four grades and see if the mileage changes. I know performance will go down as the ECU pulls timing but we’ll see if the mileage drops.
I’ve got a 600 hp Vette parked next to it with a SC on it and the performance drop just putting in 91 instead of 93 is quite noticeable. I’m kind curious how this plays out because I thought the 335 hp Lincoln Nautilus I tested last week was the only forced induction I had heard of that could use 87…until yesterday
