So @NLJ had me intrigued so I decided to give it a shot.
I drove until I had 4km to empty (so likely 2-3 liters left as I have hit zero before but wasn't interested in pushing it). Then filled up using @NLJ 's technique. Here is the result:

So I was able to overfill it and no fuel spilled out. Now that said, I don't think this is something I will do on a regular basis as it was a pita and I don't want to chance spilling fuel over a few extra liters.
But it was obvious driving yesterday that I had extra range as the gas gauge was still showing completely full after 75km:
