  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

G90 & Apple Car Play

I guess that they never offer it for the 2017 G90.

I have given this much thought and I for one do not want Apple CarPlay (ACP)

It is pretty lame if you watch reviews of it. The app selection is limited and controlled, and then there is the speed control safety limitations that goes along with the system too. And you are locked out of your phone while engaged.

Here is the BMW example:

The connection - you have to use a lightning cord to use ACP from what I understand. At this point in time. This presents a whole host of issues. It has to be connected in the charge pad area. Now you have to grab a cord every time and connect your phone. You will constantly be asking yourself what are the benefits of USB versus Bluetooth, do I feel like connecting it up...is this trip lightning cord worthy? Is it really worth leaning sideways to get the phone out of the front pocket of your skinny jeans?

So now you have this mess in the front of your luxury car. An iPhone 7 plus with a white cord hanging off of it going right back into the place where you will most likely stick your phone while driving. And add to that an iPhone 8 that might get wireless charging....it will be an even bigger wart then. Supposedly Harman is working on wireless connections for ACP too. That will be a big step.

ACP and wireless charging may change my thoughts on this.

I am going to guess that most of us have a dash mount for the phone so that you can quickly store the phone and begin the charging process. It is probably within arms length too. What will you do with that system when ACP is active. It becomes pretty obsolete or does it?

The Genesis G90 system is awesome! Go check out some other luxury brands and you will quickly find that somehow Genesis nailed it with this infotainment system. There is no way having Apple Maps would be better than the Genesis System. You can not use Google Maps on ACP at this point. And from what I have seen there is no way that would be better either.

There has been decades of work done to make the cockpits of cars and airplanes ergonomically superior to other work environments. Apple and Android think they can just slap these overlays on a well thought out infotainment system and it will be better. Not possible! Touch screens in cars are worthless. It is an ergonomic nightmare to hold out your arm and touch a screen to find a menu. The knob, mouse or voice is the way to go so that your arm, wrist and hand are in a neutral position when driving. Also when driving, the attention deficit of watching your hand's position in relation to the screen, and receiving the feedback that it worked, and then visually process the on-screen data is too great; probably more dangerous than someone reading a text in my opinion.

Obviously there is a level of redundancy that is needed in all these systems...button on the steering wheel and dash, visual cue on the main screen and HUD etc.

I for one do not want ACP to ruin the current G90 infotainment system experience. I am perfectly content with my iPhone 7 plus in its vent cradle. There is no way ACP's design and functionality will be so great as to prevent me from using my phone altogether, so I might as well just keep it the way it is and use it as a supplement to the current system. ACP will just annoy me and not be as good as we know it could be. ACP doesn't even display text messages. How lame!

And I recall the Apps that BMW had for interaction with the iphone...it was very quirky...you couldn't access certain parts of the Amazon music app when it was engaged so you had to quickly pick an Amazon radio song before the BMW realized the iPhone was connected and started the BMW Connected Drive app on your phone and took over, that is I f you wanted to scroll endlessly through Prime Music. That is my example of the quirkiness I would expect from ACP.

Lastly the great irony in all this is that what made the iPhone so great and what causes Android to have so many issues is the fact that Apple was allowed to control the whole eco system of the iPhone and push out updates as needed, where Android was at the carrier's mercy causing slow adoption of their latest Android OS. In the automobile industry Apple has Android problems....touch, no touch, steering wheel buttons, center knob, all the brands and sub brands, all the screen sizes, capacitive touch and pressure touch screens...the list of variables is endless. Apple will have very limited control and that will make the software sub-standard.

I am already experimenting with Alexa in my car and that is the way to go. If I could only get it to hook up via Bluetooth. Or get the multi directional microphone tech built into the car or the cell phone so that you can give voice commands and be understood when music is jamming!

Thank you for the very excellent review. It gives me a lot to think about. Also I no longer regret not having Apple car play on my new G90.

No problem. That is totally my opinion. Others will disagree and rightly so. They may have an app they use quite frequently and has a feature they can't live without. Who knows. Hopefully we will see some other opinions too.
