Just wondering how well running regular unleaded has worked out for those that have tried it. Has the engine pinged at all? If yes, then the computer hasn’t fully adjusted perfectly to accept the lower octane.
 
I can't imagine they'd say lower octane was acceptable if there's any engine pinging. Most cars, even ones that are considerably older, have some kind of knock sensor that will de-tune the car (like change the spark advance) in anticipation of impending knocking/pinging.

I have run 87 octane since delivery. NO issues.
 
I used to have a Honda and 91 octane was the minimum per Honda. I fed it mid grade (89) and it pinged. I didn’t worry about it because it also pinged on 91 octane. I had that car for 13 years and 200,000km or so and it never blew up.

Top tier does not necessarily mean the station's gas is great. I have a Citgo station near me that constantly has water (or something) in their 93 octane. My car (not a G70) idles like crap until I put Drygas in the tank; I have no problem with other stations with the same brand in the area. It took me a while to attribute the issue to this station, since it was the one I used most often.

Top Tier is only related to the amount of detergents in their additive package to clean carbon deposits. It has nothing to do with octane or problems in the gas due to faulty storage tanks (such as water in the tanks).

It is also more or less self enforcing, so it is subject to fraud by station owners, who may not purchase the approved additive package gas they are supposed to if they sell a particular "brand." In other words, the brands do not own all of the stations who sell their gas, and it is possible that some private stations cheat and sell counterfeit gas.
 
So far I have only used premium (91 octane) even if the car is fine with regular and only loses a bit of power, and even if I can't feel that power loss, the mental thought of not having the power bothers me more than spending the extra $1-2 per day lol
 
Ok so far the debate has been about using lower than the recommended/suggested 91. What about higher? Would a normal driver see a benefit from using something like Petro Canada's "Ultra 94" in the G70 or is it just throwing money away?

I think you would be wasting your money, but perhaps you should experiment and see if there is a difference. After I hit 10k I'm going to try a few tanks of regular to see what the difference is.
 
Read somewhere the 5.0 is rated 420 HP on premium and 407 HP on regular. At 50+ cents/gal more for premium, I'm good with 407. Have had zero issues with running regular since buying the car.

Someone knows that you are throwing your money away, but at least you are wise enough to do it at Costco with Top Tier gas.
 
92 since the 1st day of ownership and gas is also cheap here in N Texas around $2/gal Costco when I last filled.
The cheapest was around $1.20/gal for premium during the hunker down times.
Not to mention a gallon of water cost 1.49.
But I may change my mind if it ever hits $4/gal again.

Does owners manual state that 92 (or higher) is needed for the G70?
 
I had been going with Sam's club because of the proximity to my home and my office, but I see that Costco is considered Top Tier and Sam's Club isn't. Maybe it's time to switch super-wholesalers.

This has been covered but here goes... The important part is using a TOP TIER fuel. The car will adjust for the octane level. Also, it may seem counter intuitive but 87 octane has the best actual performance in a mild climate. I've tested it against 91 and 93.

When I was working in Havelock (Cherry Point MCAS) area. My ex-Genesis r-spec was filled with 92 pure gasoline.
It's one of the areas near the coast that you could find plenty of gas stations as such gasoline available for marine engines.
Premium gas is recommended in the manual I think.
