Gas mileage

My wife and I just got back from a road trip. Drove from North Carolina to Florida and back in our 2013 Genesis 3.8 V6 and it did great and also averaged a little better than 32 mpg.

Is that by the computer calculation or the 'tried-and-true' notebook method? We had interesting results when we lived in AZ (Sierra Vista, 5,000' elevation) and would drive to Tucson AZ (2643')...it was about a 75 mile drive (30 or so miles divided highway, 60+ mph, and the rest on I-10 (75+ mph) and of course had some hills but you gradually went down in elevation. Going there, the CPU would show sometimes 34 mpg, coming back (uphill) about 25 mph, for an average of about 29.5...the actual fuel calculations would be about 27 or so.

Had you done a nonstop roundtrip the computer should foot with the 27.

An incorrect method is to note the avg mpg there distinct from the avg back and then average those two numbers.

Need to instead know actual gallons consumed and miles.

Huh? I keep meticulous fuel consumption records in a notebook in each car. As I said the ACTUAL fuel used calculations yielded about 27 - I don't always rely on the CPU telling me the correct average. I've yet to own any vehicle that has a cpu calculating exactly what I get with my records. Last time I was in AZ with this car was 2012.
