While filling my Genesis with fuel and the pump clicks off I find I can put over four more gallons of gas in the tank if I want to take the time to stand there and click in a tenth or two at a time. It does this at any pump at any station. It has even been repeated with a dealer service rep there to verify my claim. Does anyone else's Genesis sedan do this? Hyundai claims this is normal.

If you stop filling when the pump auto-cuts, what does the dash fuel gauge indicate? When I let the pump shut itself off, the dash fuel gauge is "Full" or slightly above. I doubt my car's fuel tank has 4 gallons of empty space with a Full gauge.

When I fill the tank, the gauge reads full. Past experience with my ES330, after auto cutoff I could slowly continue to fill for a couple of gallons (about 8 litres up here). Although the needle indicates full on my Gennie, it does come off the full quickly which makes me think that if I spoon fed the tank I could get some more gas in there. Perhaps I'll try on next fillup.

Doesn't the manual say not to top it off?
Not sure about the Genny, but my Corvette's manual said that.

To the original poster it sounds like you have a problem, but the only way to be 100% sure is to refill the tank from nearly empty and confirm how much it takes. For example, if you fill it from 20-30 miles from empty and it should take a the specified amount (19-20 gallons) minus a gallon to a gallon and a half.

To the "oldtimer" be very careful slowly filling a tank. The excess will go into the overflow/evaporator canister and cause all kinds of problems. Not sure what the capacity of the canister is, but there is a reason you are not supposed to top your tank.

The overall question is - how much gas are you putting in the car on an "empty" tank? If you are putting in ~17-18 gallons, you have a full system. If you are putting in ~14 gallons and the system is stopping, then you have an issue, probably with the breather neck of to the tank. If you are putting in ~17 gallons, and then can force in another ~4 gallons, you are flooding the evap systems in the fuel system.

When the trip computer reads off "---" remaining miles, you have an "empty" system that will take ~17-18 gallons, depending on just how empty it is. If you can put anything around 16 gal or more in without a cut off, you are good. If you are getting the cut off with 14-16 gal or so, that is not normal.

Like Gold Z, I've had the same experience in filling the tank of my 3.8. Once the nozzle trips off, it's possible to add 3 to 4 gallons of additional gas by slowly adding fuel. Oddly, my miles-to-empty gauge does not seem to account for the "additional" gas. For example, today I made a 500-mile trip on one tank (when topped up as described above). However when starting out with a full tank my miles-to-empty gauge never indicated more than about 380. Nevertheless, I completed the trip without stopping for fuel. In doing the math, I averaged 26.3 mpg (x 20 gallons = 526 miles), so I must have began the trip with about 20 gallons of fuel. Therefore it would seem that unless one slowly adds the last 3-4 gallons, a "full" tank is only 16 - 17 gallons. In short, Gold Z is correct in saying there is a problem with filling the tank.

What did the "average fuel mileage" say before the trip? If you were driving more city the average fuel mileage may have dropped to 19-21mpg and so the 380 estimate might not have been that far off. As you drove on the trip, and the mileage went up, the estimate should have climbed.

I averaged 26.3 mpg (x 20 gallons = 526 miles)

That is 7 tenths of a gallon greater than the stated fuel capacity. You most likely flooded the evaporative canister which is not good for the emissions system.

Just filled our V6 when it had gone to "--- to empty." The mileage read 413.6. I only filled till the pump shut off. It took 18.687 gallons, .613 gallons shy of the 19.3 the V6 is rated for. At 22.13mpg we had all of 13 and 1/2 miles left till empty. If I recall, the estimate was around 400 to empty. Not to dissimilar to yours.

It sounds to me like at least two of you out there have a problem with your fuel filler neck. I suspect there is a bend in the neck which causes the gas flow to be restricted and this shuts off the fuel flow prematurely. This should be fixed under warranty.

I recently filled my tank using the auto setting & it took 17 gallons to shutoff,
but I had gas in the tank,as the warning light had just come on.So I guess
it was accurate.

I know exactly what you are experiencing. My first 3 attempts to fuel at 2 different gas stations I could not even set the fuel nozzle on low auto without it cutting off. My last and 4th attempt was at an entirely different station with older type fuel nozzle and the fill up went flawless at full flow. I still have less then a thousand miles on the car so haven't had many opportunity to fuel. I had an appointment with the dealer to check possible venting problem but canceled after last satisfactory fill up.

Were you able to resolve your issue?

Regards,
Darrell

This is still an issue for me. I stopped at a QT station here in Marietta GA with a little less than a half full tank. I could not set the gas nozzle on auto as it kept clicking off. After several clicks of the gas nozzle cutting off and about 2 gals of gas I stopped. I drove a couple of miles down the road to the citgo station that previously did not give me a problem. First try I was able to set the nozzle at full flow and the nozzle did not cut off until the tank was full which was about 6 1/2 gal of gas later.
I love the car but this fuel thing is getting to be irritating. There has to be a solution.
