thank you for your expertise. Very helpful for me. Different car but my sister purchased a Porsche Macon and was told she has to use premium. Also her Cadillac suv.

The octane level of the gas is a separate issue from the amount of detergents required for Top Tier certification. Octane level of gas is important to eliminate detonation (early explosion in the combustion chamber), and engines are tuned for a minimum level of octane.

Some engines, like the Hyundai Tau 5.0 V8 are designed to handle regular or premium octane levels, but with less horsepower at the regular octane level (87). That engine was EPA tested with premium, so it probably gets slightly better MPG with premium in addition to more HP.
