  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hey Guys,

I was wondering if anyone had their gear shifter loosen up over time? It doesn't seem to be between the connection of the rounded end to the stick, but the stick to the internal workings covered by the "curtains".

My girlfriend's elantra and my dad's Genesis both don't seem to have this issue, but mine does. The dealer says that it's normal, and there will be some play as you have to be able to change gears easily, but that sounds like BS. Has anyone ever taken apart the shifter area? Something I could easily do myself rather then arguing with the dealer service center again?

Thanks!

Mine has no "play" in it and feels solid in hand. It doesn't move around when the cars accelerating etc., even in manual shift mode. I would think there to be some sort of a pin / screw that holds it in place below that black curtain. What year is your Genesis, I can look at the TSB's and see if anything is mentioned?

That was my suspicion as well. It's a 2009 3.8, thanks!

Any problems with shifting it in/out of gear or it just feels loose in general? I read the 2009 TSB's and didn't find anything specific to a loose shifter. Does your 2009 have a "manual shift" tiptronic mode?...and if so does it feel loose when it's in the neutral position between the +/-?. Definitely bring it in and have them take a look at it, if your the original owner or it's a CPO (Certified Pre-Owned) it's most likely covered under warranty. I hope this helps some :)

Thanks Gameday,

I'll take it in and make the tech compare it to a new shifter. It is loose when in tiptronic as well.

Thanks again!
