  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I everyone,

I own a 2012 rspec with 5.0. I am at 60 000 km and I was looking to change the tranny oil as preventive maintenance. Note that I am in Canada and the weather is thought on car ( I am thinking in winter)

I call the dealer and they told it's 1000$ job as the oil is 115$ quarter and I need 8

Anyone have experience changing the oil? Whick type to use? Is this similar cost?

Thanks a lot!

I have a 2013 Rspec (same transmission) and I paid about $250ish total at the local Hyundai dealership. When they did mine they drained and filled 5Q total (as you do NOT do a flush on this transmission)

What I've read is that the car holds about 16 qts and so doing a Drain and Fill (D&F) of 5qts is better than nothing but generally speaking you should be doing it twice more.

I have other car brands and have done this where i've changed it 3 times at 4qts and then a final 4th fill but the overall cost was only about $110 bucks. I get that doing the same would cost our Genny a lot more but to do it right that's the way I understood it as its a sealed tranny.

I am at 85k ish and have done two drain and fills using Valvoline maxlife ATF. Plan on doing another at 100k. Drained about 5 quarts both times. Given the filter is built into the pan on these as far as I am concerned every 35-40 it should be done like alot of the fords where the filter is internal. Just my 02 cents. 2012 r-spec.

Would you know if the 2012 3.8 uses the same ATF?

Is this what you are using: Valvoline Max ATF from Walmart for $17.49

Can't say 100% but i believe all of the 2012's regardless of motor have the 8 speed trans. If so you should be good on the Maxlife. Going off memory I believe the spec we need is Hyundai SP-IV which Maxlife covers. There have been a couple other threads on this, might want to do a quick search.

simply get a drain and fill at a Hyundai dealership. they will get 5Q out
Do it again after 10k or so and be good for a long while
Do not try and save a few $100 by using other fluid or at another shop. These 8 speed transmissions are not "cheap"
basically if it goes out I would send the vehicle to the junk yard.

SP-IV-RR, so Valvoline Maxlife is fine for the 8 speed.

I would somewhat agree with OUsig. Using the Maxlife was a personal choice based on prior experience with it. The OEM fluid is always the best option as there is no question as to its compatibility. These transmissions are ridiculously expensive and piece of mind some folks get from the dealer taking care of it is the way to go for most.

Myself I am a skeptic. I don't really trust the dealers to work on my cars due to past experiences from many different brands. I will take it there for warranty if I have to but other than that I do my own work and believe an approved spec on a fluid is an approved spec on a fluid from a reputable brand.
