  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Change fluid and pan/filter. every 60k t 80k miles and the transmission will last well beyond 200,000 miles. The ZF does use special fluid and is sealed with no dip stick.

Can one do it at home?

Have to be very careful and not really a DIY job by my experience. It is a temperature sensitive process. Had a shop do my ZF on BMW and completely screwed it up requiring replacement of the transmission.

you can find write ups online for how to do the fluild/filter (which is intigrated into the pan) change on these trans, just google 6hp26 fluid change write up and you can find a few. The only special tools you'll need are a temp gun and a transfer pump to put in the jug of new trans fluid as you can only really pump it in. I did mine in my garage, just jack it up and get it level on 4 jackstands, also having a second person to start the car and move it through the gears as you fill so you dont have to keep going up and down.

I bought 2 Ravenol 6HP 4L jugs (just so i knew i'd have enough and have some extra just as backup) and got a filter/pan on amazon, cost around $180. Just read the procedure 2-3 times so you no exactly what needs to be done and in what order and it's really not as hard as it sounds.

If you are a good DIY person regarding cars then yes . As stated you have to raise the car and it must be level. Also you need the tools as mentioned plus a drain pan. I do a lot myself and restore old cars but decided not to touch the zf transmission. I took mine to the dealer. It was a great car.
