  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I had an unusually late evening at work last night and was heading home on a rather empty I-75. Anyways, a Dodge SRT4 running nitrous (see below for how I know) started toying with me in the lane over, accelerating and decelerating.

Anyways, I took the bait. First two pulls from about 60 (won't give top speed reached but it wasn't outrageous :p ) we were dead even - couldn't pull away and vice versa. Third pull he caught my transmission napping and pulled hard on me.

Fourth and final pull I knocked it over to Shifttronic and held the gear that kept my RPMs just under peak torque. That did the trick. I didn't blow his doors off, but I got a quick jump on him that he couldn't recover from. Fun times.

That thing made an awful racket and flames were coming out of his hood near where his windshield sprayers were located when he got on it, presumably from a shot of NO. The other give away was odd smell coming from his exhaust. I hadn't smelled nitrous before, but the scent of burning starter fluid or butane  was permeating from his exhaust.

Before the flames start, no I don't condone street racing. No, I don't condone extra-legal speeds. I didn't go nuts here and the road was empty on a 4 lane highway.

It was a pretty fun experience. I know those little cars are quick - especially when running nitrous. I was proud of the 3800lb V6 Genesis strutting its stuff. I know V8 guys, you would've eaten that little Neon for lunch ;).

I wouldn't be surprised if he was toying with you. Those silly SRT4's can be a perfect sleepers, check them out on youtube ;)

I guess there's that possibility, but I refuse to believe it :p.

He certainly sounded like he was WOT and was spraying. This definitely wasn't in sleeper guise. It was lowered and had high offset white 18's. Not my cup of tea. He also had at least one passenger.

I love those stories!
Here is the way we did it in the 50's and 60's.

THE CROWN

Jerry was a good kid, and for years he worked really hard
To save up his money so he could buy himself a car
He was one month away from turning seventeen
When he bought the prettiest car he had ever seen

He’d thought about a Chevy, with power-pack and stick
Until he laid his eyes upon that ’56 Crown Vic
It was a Crown Victoria, painted black and white
It had a T-bird special, 3-speed stick with overdrive

Jerry loved his car and he treated it real fine
But sitting at a red light he’d leave you behind
Then he’d let off the gas once he’d put you down
Everyone knew he was the King, because he had the Crown

Jerry drove it like a pro and he was known all over town
They’d come from miles away to try to take the Crown
The Crown Victoria’s fame spread clear across the state
Jerry had become the King, His Crown no one could take

Then one day a stranger came driving into town
In a ’58 Impala no one had seen around
He stopped at the drive-in, ordered a burger and a shake
And said I hear there is a Crown around that no one can take

Word spread real fast that the stranger was in town
And it seemed the whole town began to gather ‘round
The stranger played it cool, he didn’t brag or boast
But he sent word to be the King was what he wanted most

He found the King at the Red Light, leading out of town
And the ’58 Impala pulled up beside the Crown
They revved up their engines and neither looked around
But when the light turned green, they laid the rubber down

The ’58 Impala was running right behind
But then they were neck and neck as they crossed the County line
Jerry knew he was the King, so he kept his foot down
But the ’58 Impala was right beside the Crown

The King shifted into high at about a hundred-nine
Then the Crown Victoria began to fall behind
The ’58 Impala just barely pulled around
And the King knew it was no use, he had lost The Crown

The Crown had been taken, and it broke Jerry’s heart
But he stopped to meet the stranger and to talk about their cars
What the stranger told him really hurt his pride
The Crown had been taken by a Power-Glide

It was thirty years ago that The Crown lost the race
And no one has seen it on the road to this very day
But legend has it, late at night, out near the County line
Sometimes you can see The Crown as it goes flying by

Now, I’ve never told anyone and I guess I never will
How Jerry came one night and said he had to sell
He said it been over thirty years since she ran her last race
Sometimes I’ll take her out late at night just to keep her in shape

So if you happen out some night, out near the County line
You might get a glimpse of The Crown as it goes flying by
He said he wanted me to have it, that it would do him real proud
‘Cause I’m the stranger who came that day
And took away his Crown.

THE CROWN

Pretty neat short story. It does lose a bit of luster if you bring it into the present and replace "Crown Vic" and "Impala" with "Neon" and "Evo" or "WRX" and "RX-7".

"Taking the neon" just doesn't have the romantic nostalgic feel to it that your story has.
