If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Genesis dealer trying to charge $205 for SIMPLE oil change!!

One option : ask for the $56 oil change and bring your own synthetic ($~35). Then watch them put it in. best of both worlds.
This is the best solution I have heard yet. I was going to suggest it myself but never got around to posting. Unless you enjoy the frustration, know that you are fighting a losing battle.
I'd give up on such poor service honestly. I left the brand last year because of multiple similar stories.
This isn’t a brand problem as much as it’s a dealer problem. Go somewhere else since you have found a better price. @Horizon Limos, Why are you fighting this? It’s simply the way they do business. No one is making you go there.

I agree it's not a brand problem. There is only one genesis dealer within a 3 hour drive from me. That was the single biggest factor for moving on for me. They have a poor reputation and I've had poor interactions with them myself.

Some have had similar experiences with one bad dealer in their area and found another good dealer a short distance away. Every brand has good and bad dealers. What sucks is when there isn't a 2nd better one nearby. I worry about other brands that are doing this "limited dealer networks" too, like Cadillac. It's a huge liability to the brand if they don't reign in those remaining dealers. Any service manager that can't comprehend the benefits of synthetic in a turbo engine needs to work elsewhere, they clearly know nothing about engines, or don't care (which is worse).

I tried explaining that to her.
She just looked at me, dead faced... and said, "I've never had a Genesis owner complain about our price, or the use of semi-synthetic."

Maybe the car owners aren't aware that they're not getting full synthetic.
I asked because that's all I run in my cars.
They say it like that to make the customer feel dumb.

I had free conventional oil changes with my new G80 and they tried to charge me over $100 for an oil change when I brought my own oil! I abandoned the free oil changes (which they love) and avoid the dealership unless absolutely necessary.

Yeah, I'm not really "fighting it" at this point.
I fought it while they actually HAD my car and told me the price...

I'm not thrilled to have to drive farther as this dealership is 5 minutes from my house and I bought the car there.
But I agree, if they don't even know the proper oil that should be used to begin with, why would I consider servicing my G70 there?

BTW, I really do like the car... so, there's that.

My local Porsche dealer charges $400 for an oil change for a Macan with the 2.0T, which only takes 5 qts. But yes, even half of that seems a little insulting. Ha ha. Needless to say, I do it myself. The Porsche also calls for 0/30, but the ESP, which is more expensive. Our AFE costs $30 for a 5-qt jug (I always stock up), so right about $40 for 6 qts including tax. The OEM filter is less than $10, so about $50 per oil change on the G70. And even taking my time, it's A LOT more convenient and quicker than having to take it to a dealer.

Folks complain about getting cheap Hyundai dealership experience at supposedly expensive luxury car Genesis is supposed to be. Well... that luxury dealership experience has to be paid one way or another... by the customers.

If you want the cake and eat it too...

Anyone with a BMW or MB recently have an oil change? Cost?
A guy at work had an Audi A7. He said any time he went to the dealer it was $400 and up but I never asked for details.

In principle, I would agree with that theory. And I may even buy into it if I were getting ANY kind of high-end experience...

Except, like I said to the manager, how am I getting a "luxury experience" when I'm getting the SAME experience as the Hyundai cars that were in front and behind me in line for service??
The only thing I was getting - charged more than double for no explainable reason.

Realistically, what is the point of arguing with the dealer service dept on this? You asked for a quote and they provided one. Free market economy means SELLERS are free to sell their goods/services at whatever price the market will bear. Buyers, in turn, are free to buy from whichever offer they so choose. If those two meet and agree, then a sale occurs. If not... then not.

It's the same as with car prices.

I'm fully aware of the concept of micro-economics. And supply and demand. And all that..
You kind of sound like I'm to blame for them charging $205 for an oil change.

It wasn't a QUOTE that I had to approve or deny. They already finished service after I booked online ($55 quoted online for conventional oil- see attachment).
I was arguing that I wasn't happy with paying $205 for service they already finished. And I questioned HOW they can justify charging that amount.

I'm not arguing, or even talking, to them anymore at this point. I'm already moving on. They lost my business.

I will be going to the dealership 20 minutes away that charges $89 for the same full-synth oil change.

Thanks for the lesson tho Volfy.

I ride a BMW K1600GT and peruse BMW forums and FB groups occasionally. It isn't uncommon to see posts of folks paying upwards of $800 for a glorified oil change. I said "glorified" because - to justify the exorbitant cost - the dealer service dept always tack on a laundry list of items they do along with the oil change, most of which amount to a bunch of fluff.

I let the dude that lives at my house do my oil/filter change. Guy is more than happy to buy whichever full-synthetic oil and brand of filter I specifies for less than $40, parts & labor. He even give me a soothing back massage and steaming hot bath afterwards. What a guy! My wife says he looks a lot like me... even swears like me. I think I'm wayyy better looking.

LOL... you beat me to my previous post. These things have always been same, and I doubt it will ever change.

I keep telling myself I'm getting too old to wrench on my cars and bikes, but every year, I keep doing it. I'm sure at some point that decision will be made for me, whether I like it or not. Before that happens, I'll just keep spending time lying on cardboard over concrete in my own driveway.

Horizon Limos, maybe you could just take your car to an independent lube shop for the oil change. You will surely pay less and I doubt you'd get any worse care. It shouldn't affect the warranty and will be a lot less frustration.

I change mine myself but have no issue taking it to the local Kwik Kar Lube. I'm just cheap.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
maybe i missed why this didn't apply earlier, but the G70 comes with 'free' OCI's. 3 years in the US, 5 years in Canada (assuming this is NA posting). 0W30 only comes as a full synthetic based on everything i have seen/read/heard. i.e. you cannot buy a dino oil 0W30 - doesn't exist. add these two things together and nobody should be paying for synth changes within their 'free' period. maybe Genesis has dropped the free scheduled maintenance perk for '22+ models?

perhaps the service manager doesn't know what a 0W30 spec entails and thinks it is dino or a blend, and thinks any request for synth oil is an upcharge. but if OP confirms that 0W30 is being used, it must already be a synth oil.

also, using a dealer for an at-cost oil change (or any routine, non-specialized service), unless they are competitively priced, is unnecessary and there are far better options that have already been mentioned in this thread. example: i take my wife's Highlander to Toyota for OCI's because i can't do it cheaper anywhere else (or myself). their cost, which includes 7L of 0W20 (also available only as a Synth spec, just like our 0W30), filter, and a host of inspections/top-ups/etc, comes to <$90 CAD after shop fees, etc. until someone else can do it for less, i'll use them.

He does not have free due to it being a used Genesis.

^ oh, wasn't aware being a CPO unit affected warranty and related entitlements. don't recall reading that limitation restricting coverage to original/first registered owner. but that would explain why he'd be on the hook. still, i believe my other points stand regarding the basis of 0W30 oils.

Service manager was short with him and basically told him to take what I offer or go somewhere else. Although he had to pay for this oil change because he did not get the bill until it was already done, he has stated he will be going elsewhere from now on.

Do you have your actual invoice from the dealer? Not the online quoted price. If the dealer services both brands, that $55 is guaranteed the Hyundai 4 cylinder no frills oil change. I charge about $130 for an 8qt oil change. Without seeing the invoice it is hard for anybody to say what's right and what's wrong. However, the service advisor should provide you with a price and obtain your authorization before moving forward with the service. Giving you a surprise when you pick up is a no no.

For my GV80, in chapter 2 of the owner's manual under RECOMMENDED LUBRICANTS and CAPACITIES, the charch shows:

SAE oW-30, API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GHF-6

It also has a flag 5 as follows:

*5: Requires <API SN PLUS (or above) Full Synthetic> grade engine oil. If lower grade engine oil (mineral oil including Semi-synthetic) is used, then engine oil and engine oil filter must be replaced as indicated severe maintenance condition.

Under normal use, the vehicle is scheduled for oil and filter change every 8000 miles unless severe maintenance condition and then it is every 5000 miles.
Not in the G70. Nor the G80 Sport. The 2.0t and 3.3t take 5W30. Only the 2.5t and 3.5t take 0W30.

OK, but this discussion is for the GV70 that does have the 2.5 or 3.5.
