Genesis G70 Pricing

I just disagree with all of this. The take rate is obviously lower for the MT - but it is my opinion that it will be even lower now than it could have been due to the model being stripped down. There is no reason not to offer the 2.0T Sport AT and MT with the exact same content. Again, MT buyers do no buy a MT because they are cheap and want to save money. This isn’t Honda or Hyundai or Toyota. People in the luxury segment are going to expect vehicles to be equipped appropriately.

Genesis USA themselves stated that they are purposely offering the 6spd manual as a more stripped down version, because they believe that the majority of people who would want one are the people that enjoy driving for the excitement of the drive, not the luxury of it. That said, lighter weight, less creature comforts, better/more fun performance vs the other 2.0 offerings.

I'll have to dig up the quote when I have more time.

I think "stripped" is a strong word in this case. The 6MT has the performance goodies PLUS the heated/ventilated seats and upgraded sound system. Thank you, Genesis, for including those on the 6MT. It's understandable they would make a few compromises while trying to include some buyers who would be priced out if the price crept up any farther.

I know this is me! Coming from a base Mazda3 hatchback, it'll be a huge step up!

I agree with this. It's far from a "base" model, even if it is towards the lower trim models.

Dual zone auto climate control
Heated/ventilated seats
Full LED lighting
Android Auto/Apple CarPlay
Lane Departure Warning/Cross Traffic Alert
Lexicon audio system
Both front seats power adjustable with memory on the drivers side
Auto up/down windows on all 4 (that's probably standard on all of its competition too)

A lot of this is perspective from where you're coming from with regards to your current car/cars in the past. For me, it's a lot. My "nice" car I co-signed when I was 18 living at home. I paid for it and the modifications for it myself, but I'd be lying if I said I could have done it while in school/working if I didn't live at home with my parents. Now with my own place, I still wanted to keep my GTI but wanted to drive a nice, reliable, fun commuter car, which the Mazda 3 does perfectly. In some ways, it's more fun than my ~290whp GTI. It's a momentum car for sure, but getting 35-40mpg (35.4mpg average on Fuelly over 48k) on regular is awesome. But back to my point, the GTI has bi-xenon HIDs, a sunroof, way nicer seats, and alloy wheels stock whereas the Mazda came on hubcaps, halogen headlights, etc.

But either way, I feel that even the G70 Sport as a "lower end option" model still comes way better equipped than the German competition. For one, they normally don't include the Lane Departure Warning/Cross Traffic Alert and a premium audio system as standard, or even heated seats in some cases, let alone ventilated!

I understand this point. It just doesn't add up to how they've (Hyundai/Genesis) handled MT cars in the past... and currently handle them in their Hyundai lineup and G70 in Canada.. The truth is, I may have to settle for the AT Sport - I should give modern day AT's a chance as I know they have improved over the years and now offer faster performance and better MPG than a MT can. I haven't ruled out buying something used with a MT as a daily so I can at least still have fun rowing my own gears, but I just cannot see myself in the US spec MT G70. It doesn't make sense to me and in my opinion this decision will be the reason why 2019 is the only year with a MT available in this car. The other possibility is the new 3 series that debuts in Paris this fall. Odds are they continue to offer the MT with plenty of equipment to go along with it. First things first - I need to test drive an AT G70 and go from there

Has the 2019 G70 been confirmed to be the only year of the 6MT option? I read that somewhere else and that would really bum me out for a 2 reasons.

1.) I'm not in the market yet.
2.) I don't do first model years of any car (learned that from my Mk5 GTI)

As far as mileage and EPA, it's really hard to get readings for a manual. The EPA has their own procedure in doing so, but being a manual, shift points, downshifting, etc. is different for everyone. I tend to rev match all of my downshifts and look way ahead. If traffic behind me isn't bad and I see a light turning yellow, I'll downshift to the light to use the engine to brake. That's probably why I'm averaging 35.4mpg in the Mazda3 over almost 48k which is higher than what 2014-2018's are getting per Fuelly. And no, I don't drive highway most of the time. I do local traffic with speed limits ranging from 25-50mph. I bet some will do better than their automatic counterparts in the 6MT version of the G70.

Nothing has been confirmed. While the latest release shows configurations, they can be changed too.

If you do end up getting the A/T 2.0, at least you could rest easy knowing that it's faster than the manual. Those gear ratios in the 2.0 8spd look pretty dang good, significantly shorter than the 3.3's tranny.

So...went to my Audi dealer yesterday. Test drove an S5 Sportback. Premium Plus...loaded except for the driver assistance crap. MSRP is $64k.

So...right off the bat it is $13k more....and it is excluding stuff the G70 has. Add another $1,500 to have 3 year maintenance. One year less warranty as well (4 years vs 5 years).

Tell you what...I am an Audi guy...and I do love the G70. But...the tech in the S5 is off the charts. The entire MMI and the touch sensitive buttons are brilliant. LED lighting is so slick as well.

But...at the end of the day...add the Lane Keep, etc, etc...and it is roughly $20k more than the G70. Crazy man.

Lease numbers suck as well...the GM even admitted that. Forgot the money factor and residual (~61%)...but essentially I cannot afford the car. 42 month lease with zero down came to about $850/month. Fme.

So then I looked at identically equipped A5 Sportback. $10k less. 42 month lease with zero down came to $700/month. So ~$4-5k more than the G70 !!!! Excludes driver assistance and obviously a crapload slower (5.7 sec).

Anyhoo...I knew these numbers would shake me into reality. This is why I am waiting for the G70.

End of rant.

It really is crazy how expensive cars have gotten. I remember the Mk5 GTI starting at $22k with the sport suspension, HIDs standard, and a good old 6 speed manual. My GTI was $24,400 with Pkg 1 (sunroof and XM and Monster floor mats). I've seen $45-$50k Mercedes Benz's rolling around with halogen headlights. It's absurd! Has inflation really crept up that much since 2006? Audi still makes a darn nice car, but it really does make you wonder, when are people going to realize that the Japanese and now Korean companies have caught up in a lot of respects. I love my GTI, still own it after 12+ years. But I'd be lying if I said it never saw the dealership. Maybe it was because it was the first model year (ironic given that it had been out in Europe since 2003), but it had every TSB and recall in the book. I had more loaner vehicles throughout the warranty period. It was also modified, but most of the stuff it'd come in for was not related to the modifications. I'm just lucky that this was pre-Dieselgate because I'm not so sure they'd be lenient towards modifications!

Meanwhile, my 2015 Mazda 3 (2nd year of this generation) has been in the dealership 3 times in 3.5 years and almost 50k of ownership. Yes, the Mk5 is built way better and feels more substantial, but there's a strong argument to be said about Japanese reliability. I drive the Mazda just as hard and take care of my cars. I feel it could be a similar story of the Korean companies vs. Audi's (which is largely a lot of VW parts if you really want to get technical).

One other story. My long time friend, been a VW/Audi person his whole life. Had a Mk4 1.8T GTI and stepped up to a Mk4 R32 that he had for years. Countless Mk2/3 builds, owned a Mk1, and stepped up to a 2005 B6 S4 (6MT). While he still loves them, he's moved onto GM trucks and has a C6 ZO6 (originally had a 2001 F Body Camaro 6MT). He built his business on a RWD 1996 Suburban he bought for $500. He's had some issues with them of course, but not catastrophic issues like his mom's 2.0T Audi Q5 (the infamous timing chain tensioner issue) that he had to fix for her. European cars are awesome, but they do tend to need more TLC at least from what I've experienced and what my own family has experienced.

That is a cool color for sure. Me personally, I'll be leaning towards Mallorca Blue or Havana Red.

Thought I would do a quick comparison on the 2.0T AWD Sport and the Audi...since they are both listed at 252 HP.

Genesis G70 2.0T AWD

Weight 3,673 lbs
Displacement (cc) / Bore and stroke (mm) 1,998/86 x 86
HP 252 @ 6,200 rpm
Torque 260 @ 1,400 - 4,000 rpm
Fuel 22 city/30 highway mpg
Performance ???

Loaded up $47,895

Audi A4 2.0T Quattro

Weight 3,626 lbs
Displacement (cc) / Bore and stroke (mm) 1,984/82.5 x 92.8
HP 252 @ 5,000-6,000
Torque 273 @ 1,600-4,500
Fuel 24 city/33 highway mpg
Performance 0-60 in 5.6 sec

Loaded up $56,769

The G70 is less than 50 lbs heavier. Torque is quite a bit higher...hmmm.
The A4 has nicer tech in regards to MMI, LED and the awesome digital dash.
The A4 has 1 year less warranty. The price above does include the 3 year maint.
So the A4 is about $9k more...ouch. But they are willing to negotiate. I got 5% off MSRP and about $1,500 in rebates being an Audi owner.

With all the specs...I would think the G70 should be very close to the 5.6 second mark. The G70 3.3T has the same performance as the S4. So you would think Genesis would be hungry to get to the 5.6 mark. But it looks like it is closer to upper 6's which is bad.

Anyhoo...I was bored.

Man...I am torn. So...I have decided to compare my numbers to an S4 instead of the S5 Sportback. Reason is...the SB is like $4-5k more...simply for that body shape. Yeah...it's hot...but screw that.

With the S4...you save money off the top...and the lease MF is roughly 3% compared to 6% (awful) on the S5 SB.

With all discounts, etc, etc...I get get a new S4 Premium Plus for $58,334 out the door. So $6,500 more then the G70. $640/month, 42 months, 7500 miles, $3,800 OOO (taxes and fees).

But...with the S4...
- none of the lane assist, etc, etc
- no HUD
- no heated back seats
- no ventilated seats
- no 3-yr maint
- 1 year less warranty

To get all of the above...I would have to move up to a Prestige and add some options...probably another $5k or so.

I mean...that's quite a bit of stuff I am missing for $6,500 more money !!!! I just want this car hunt to be over. Worried I will miss out on this S4. This really sucks. Genesis has pissed us all off beyond belief...unreal.

In Canada it is worse. A loaded S4 is just over $74K with fees but no tax, vs $57.5K for the G70 Sport. That is a huge difference, and then add on 100,000km of Audi service which will be close to $5K.

Ultimately you will need to drive them... it can't possibly be much longer... lol

I'm comparing the G70, probably 3.3T, with the A5 SB, but we don't know about Audi '19 pricing yet. For '19, it looks like the Premium Plus trim will be including the Virtual Cockpit and the Prestige trim will include the Drivers assist package instead of these being options. If the price increase is modest, it will make the Audi more competitive. It's not unusual for more tech to be standardized as these become common.
