If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have my Hyundai Genesis for a bit over 3 years. I have <29K miles on the car and it has served me well, with ONE EXCEPTION.

The Hyundai Genesis has quality issues specifically with their paint. The roof rails between the roof and the door frame had paint chipping off and the dealer agreed it was a defect and they would replace them. The original rails were painted white and the replacement ails are black. Take it or leave it, they would not paint them. This changes the look of the car and now it looks like an Optima. Disappointment #1!

At the same time that I brought this in I pointed out 2 other quality/finish related issues. First, the bumper color had changed/faded. The clearcoat finish had discolored and was peeling off, YES peeling off. This is obvious to anyone looking at the car and further acknowledged by the dealer that they have seen and repaired several Genesis vehicles with the same issue. Disappointment 2! Lastly, the black panels between the doors had faded. According to the dealer they faded from the sun! Nothing further could be done without Hyundai approval.

I wrote Hyundai US Corporate. They advised me to take the car back to the dealer, get a quote and they would "work something out" with me. I took the car to the dealer and received a $1,785.36 quote to paint he bumper and replace the black panels. When I called Hyundai corporate back with the info they offered the cost of the parts which was $916.86, and no labor. SO GENESIS BUYER BEWARE. HYUNDAI GENESIS DOES NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT. You WILL NOT enjoy the same level of service, respect and quality that we have been used to with other upscale automobiles.

I've owned Cadillac's, Audi's, Infiniti's and other upscale cars. I have never had paint peeling off, chipping and fading. The Genesis is still a Hyundai!

Do you live/work downwind of a plant spewing chemicals or making acid rain? My father-in-law had a Chevy that was messed up from where he worked.

I don't doubt you problem but seems a rare complaint. My Hyundai/Genesis cars have had better paint than most that I've had. Dealer should have painted the rails white though, no excuse for that.

and a Lexus is still a Toyota, so what.

all manufactures have had paint and clear coat issues since the EPA mandated waterborne paint in 2012, Just this past Saturday I was commenting to a friend about the horrible clear coat peeling on his 2014 Accord, pointed out to him as we walked through a parking lot the Toyota's Lexus, Infinity, and Audi models around the same age with the same issues.

Bubbled Clear, peeling clear, yellowing clear.

Single stage (clear and base mixed together and sprayed at one time) waterborne paint sucks, and for the most part it is an industry standard on cars under $50K.

Some of the higher end cars in the $60-$100K range have Triple Stage paint, a primer base, a base coat, then a clear, and Lexus, BMW, and MBZ on their higher end vehicles use a self healing paint that can withstand a bit more abuse than standard paint.

but most vehicles that are considered "cookie cutter" cars, like The Accord, Camry, Altima, G80, Lexus IS and GS, Audi A4-A6, MBZ C-class, etc. cars under $50K that everyone seems to own, have single stage waterborne crappy paint.

Now that Dupont, PPG, US Paint and some of the better brands are on their 3rd or 4th generation of Waterborne paints they are getting better, but back 3-5 years ago it was "new" technology and like any new process it takes time to work out the issues.

It seems to me that most people just don't get the fact that manufacturers use their customer base as QA testers for their products, while they might go through a small QA process, the best source for finding Quality issues is to sell a product and have the customers complain about the issues then fix it in the next version forcing those that are upset by the issues to upgrade. Been the life blood and heart beat of American manufacturing for 70 years, for all products..

Had the same issue with the roof moldings (dealer replaced). But, now one of them is starting to come off the roof at the back of the roof. However, my current issue are the pillars. They are starting to fade; hope the dealer will take care of them when I take the car in for service soon.

You can thank the Government and tree huggers for a nationwide mandate of water based paint. They also horribly ruined canned spray paints and gasoline cans.

Your first complaint, that's a dealer issue. They should have had them painted. The only replacement parts that come pre-painted are the parking sensors and some door handles. We have only replaced one set of roof moldings due to paint issues, and we sent them out to be painted. No questions asked by Hyundai when they paid us.

I have rust spots on roof line just above glass out of warranty on 2016 w 65k miles

I have lots of specs on my front bumper and also bits coming off where I hit an object at 45 mph. Got a paint pen and it looks fine now.

thx we may have to go that route or suck it up and have it done at a bodyshop cannot believe it to be from road rocks as the person from dealer suggested on the phone.

Very odd. My 2015 spends the majority of its time outside (albeit under shade) and I've noticed none of the above. I can say that the quality of the paint is much better that my old Infiniti - it had some pretty noticeable orange peel if you looked hard enough....

I have the same issue on the roof rails and the door pillars on my 2017 G80 5.0L Ultimate. Does anyone have any suggestions to remedy the situation? The rest of my paint is absolutely stupendous. See attached pictures. A video link is also here:

I have this too on my 2015 black genesis, but it’s not as bad as yours.

Yeah... I noticed some spider webbing on my door pillars as well. The replacements are between ~ $85-$95 each. Wonder if repainting or vinyl wrapping would be a better option?

I think that there was a thread that someone wrapped them - don't know how it worked out though.

Edit - Found it
What did you do with your DH today?

I have the same issue. I started having that issue right around 4 years after. They said it's not covered by the warranty. Did Hyundai pay for paint cost?
I saw other Genesis on streets with the same condition. I am not sure why they don't recall this.

I have the same exact problem. It is very frustrating. I have yet to speak with Hyundai about it. Appears to be only on the plastics of the car. I.e. bumpers and running boards.

You're probably wasting your time. I am living with it. I had an issue last year where the dealership fried my head unit and I opened a claim with Hyundai NA. The woman who I spoke with had the most beautiful sexy voice, but she denied my claim.
