Genesis has paint quality issues - Clear coat peeling off bumper plus other paint related issues

I have the same issue on the roof rails and the door pillars on my 2017 G80 5.0L Ultimate. Does anyone have any suggestions to remedy the situation? The rest of my paint is absolutely stupendous. See attached pictures. A video link is also here:
The roof rails just be pried off and replaced. The door pillars can be covers with vinyl or plastic covers to hide the discoloration. I used 3M DiNoc carbon fiber vinyl pillars covers to dress up my faded door pillars. DiNoc also has a real carbon fiber texture feels like real carbon fiber weave. Cool.

How to remove the roof trim, Pretty easy it seems.

I had the same problems with my 2018 G80. Their area rep Jennifer Czop delayed the repair so I had no choice I had to return my leased car. I was planning on buying it and keeping it for a year and then leasing a 2021 when they had inventory. I saw proof of them deliberately delaying the repair when I saw a email from the rep to the dealership. Will never do business again with any Hyundai product. It's a shame because I owned a 2014 Genesis before I got the 2018 G80. The area rep Jennifer Czop and Genesis should be ashamed of how they handled my problem.

What did the email say?
Basically the email said to try and delay the owner of the car as long as possible by asking for pictures that show all the problems as clear as possible. They were asking for this even though the dealership took multiple pictures as well as a video. The service manager acknowledged to me that this should not be happening to the trim on the car and that it should be replaced. He found the email to be disgusting as to treat a customer this way.

I have my Hyundai Genesis for a bit over 3 years. I have <29K miles on the car and it has served me well, with ONE EXCEPTION.

The Hyundai Genesis has quality issues specifically with their paint. The roof rails between the roof and the door frame had paint chipping off and the dealer agreed it was a defect and they would replace them. The original rails were painted white and the replacement ails are black. Take it or leave it, they would not paint them. This changes the look of the car and now it looks like an Optima. Disappointment #1!

At the same time that I brought this in I pointed out 2 other quality/finish related issues. First, the bumper color had changed/faded. The clearcoat finish had discolored and was peeling off, YES peeling off. This is obvious to anyone looking at the car and further acknowledged by the dealer that they have seen and repaired several Genesis vehicles with the same issue. Disappointment 2! Lastly, the black panels between the doors had faded. According to the dealer they faded from the sun! Nothing further could be done without Hyundai approval.

I wrote Hyundai US Corporate. They advised me to take the car back to the dealer, get a quote and they would "work something out" with me. I took the car to the dealer and received a $1,785.36 quote to paint he bumper and replace the black panels. When I called Hyundai corporate back with the info they offered the cost of the parts which was $916.86, and no labor. SO GENESIS BUYER BEWARE. HYUNDAI GENESIS DOES NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT. You WILL NOT enjoy the same level of service, respect and quality that we have been used to with other upscale automobiles.

I've owned Cadillac's, Audi's, Infiniti's and other upscale cars. I have never had paint peeling off, chipping and fading. The Genesis is still a Hyundai!

I have a 2018 G80 3.3T sport, Black. Seems like I am not the only on with the roof rails that have had the paint deteriorate. I will be bringing it to the dealer in the next month .

I would also add I have had Genesis replace two wheels at no cost to me due to the clear coat flaking off. I am hoping I get the same level of service for the roof rails.

My paint seems to be holding up pretty well after 6 years. No fading other than the plastic trim pieces on the pillars and sunroof.

I have a White 2015 and am having the same problem.
The paint and clear on all the metal panels is shiny and smooth like when it was new.
The plastic bumper covers are turning kinda orange under the clear and the clear is starting to peel on the front cover.
I know paint is different for plastic as it needs to be more flexIble .
Hopefully the problem is fixed on newer models.

I have a 2014 white Genesis.

For some strange reason, the bumpers, both front and rear kinda discolored a little within 3 years, turning noticeably yellowish, no amount of polishing solved the issue and is very noticeable when you compare the bumpers against the abutting body panels.

Paid for a respray and the issue seems to be solved... Perhaps they needed a thicker coat of paint on the PU bumpers?

TG Azeras had this issue too.

I've also had pain bubbling, on the rear bumpers when water went between the paint protection film and the body work. Dealer insisted it wasn't a defect.

Just wanted to chime in. My 2105 5.0 Roof rails just faded this year and the pillar trim faded like two years ago. Keep in mind these peicies have been treated with Wet Diamond BlackFire sealant and still could not retain the clear coat.

Well I guess my 2015 AWD with pearl white has caught the plastic bumper and front grill area bug. Have all kinds of bubbling and peeling of what looks like clearcoat. all peeled spots showing flat white paint vs. the sparkly pearl color on the rest of the car

So Hyundai has no recalls i take it to fix? I'm not about to spend thousands on a new paint job.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
I have lots of specs on my front bumper and also bits coming off where I hit an object at 45 mph. Got a paint pen and it looks fine now.
I'm beginning to see similar issues on my 2016 3.8. At first, it was just tiny pock marks in the clear coat from rock chips, but now some of those spots are beginning to rust. I've use a touch-up paint pen before (on my 2009 Accord with black pearl metallic), so it should be an easy patch. Does anyone know if any of the nationwide auto parts retailers have one that matches ESG metallic?

A Hyundai dealer should be able to get the ESG color touch-up paint kit.

I’ve seen a lot of problems like these on vehicles that are in the area of refineries and other chemical plants. Just sayin’. You know where you live.

I too, have a '15 Genesis Ultimate with the clear coat peeling on the back bumper. Last July, the front end was damaged when someone backed into it. The result was $5000 in damages. The body shop did an amazing job. Anyway, upon noticing the peeling, I stopped by the same body shop for an estimate. It'll cost me $1027. I was guessing about half that. The adjuster said that the paint is a significant cost. Looks like I'll be getting it done in late October. It'll take a week which isn't a problem as I'll be retired by then. I've also pillar issues.
When I opted for a ceramic detail, the tech tried working his magic on them but to no avail. I ordered pillar covers however they didn't cover the entire surface and they weren't tapered. I'm wanting the glossy black so if anyone out there was successful, please let me know. I will check out the 3M 2080 tape that has been mentioned.

I agree. Paint is one of hyundais weak points. Guys I know pointed out to me that almost every hyundai and kia product, the bumper and the body color don't match. And the paint is very fragile and not durable as well.

I just had a bumper cover on my non Genesis (Mazda) replaced due to being rear ended. I worked a lot with my body shop to be sure OEM parts were used and I helped pick the best matching paint swatch. Body shop said paint on plastic parts vs metal parts acts different and can have a different look/tint. We marched to the fenders and not to the actual bumper cover as I would have figured. Happy with the results. Body shop also uses Dupont Imron clear vs the normal water borne clear coat that matches the base coat. Imron is aircraft type paint. Body shop said they have found typical clear coats on bumper covers does not last but a few years and when they lifetime guarantee their paint work they wanted a highly durable and long lasting clearcoat. They said they have not had any Imron clear coat failures or warranty returns.

I have a 2013 Genesis that has the clear coat peeling off on the front and rear bumpers. The car, otherwise, has been terrific. I was considering purchasing a Genesis SUV, but do not want the same problem again with the paint.

I like my G80, but I'm having paint issues on the front bumper cover, roof rails and door trim. Genesis has declined to fix it. I am going to get a side wrap on my car that tells the world Genesis doesn't stand behind its product and park it for all to see. Back to Cadillac as my daily driver.
