  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Not sure if y'all saw, but Hyundai/Genesis is likely not offering support for next-generation CarPlay:

They want to collect more user data by driving their users towards their own proprietary system, which I find to be inadequate and unacceptable in so many aspects. Let's make sure Hyundai/Genesis hear our concerns by sending them an DM, along with blasting them on social media where possible.

I recently came across an article that left me deeply troubled:

It has come to my attention that Hyundai/Genesis may not be incorporating the latest generation of Apple CarPlay into their future models. This decision is particularly concerning for me, as the commitment of Hyundai Motor Group to remain at the cutting edge of technology integration has been the cornerstone of my loyalty to your brand.

Over the past decade, my choice to invest in Hyundai/Genesis vehicles was driven by your proactive approach to adopting technologies like Apple CarPlay and Apple Car Key, often ahead of your competitors. This innovative spirit was a key factor in my decisions to purchase my Hyundai vehicles, a pioneer in first-generation CarPlay integration, and my Genesis, which was among the first to incorporate first-generation Car Key functionality.

I want to express in no uncertain terms that my future patronage hinges on Hyundai/Genesis's commitment to incorporating next-generation CarPlay features. Should this not be part of your future offerings, I will regrettably be compelled to explore alternatives, including Lexus and Porsche, who are supporting next-gen CarPlay.

I urge you to consider the implications of not adopting the latest technological advancements and to reassess this decision. Your commitment to innovation has always set you apart, and it is my hope that this will continue to be a defining characteristic of your brand.

Please ensure this concern is escalated to your executive leadership. I look forward keeping Hyundai/Genesis in my list of future vehicles to purchase.

Well, what is more disturbing than just not offering CP anymore is the trend of not offering in-vehicle navigation anymore, in favor of paid subscriptions only, like GM's new Google system. And if you cannot use CP or AA anymore, then we'd have to use our freaking phones like people do on 20-yr-old cars. Geez. I don't use CP now, but if I didn't have built-in nav, then I probably would. The more technology advances, the more backwards it goes too, it seems. We'll see what happens in the near future.

It more than likely comes down to licensing fees that Apple is charging, which is a shame. I've used both CP and AA and prefer AA; it allows for some more customization.

Also, future versions of CP seem to take over much more than the main screen of the car. Maybe Hyundai/Genesis just doesn't want to give up that much control of their vehicles to another company.

The licensing fee is the biggest myth that I keep hearing from people, but Apple simply does not charge automakers for the use of CarPlay, period. A lot of people equate automakers charging a fee for CarPlay, to Apple charging the automakers for CarPlay. It simply isn't true.

Quote from the article: "But CarPlay in itself is not a moneymaker. Currently, CarPlay is free in most new vehicles, from basic models all the way up to luxury SUVs. BMW used to charge users a monthly fee to access CarPlay, but stopped in 2019 after customers complained."

What you said about Hyundai/Genesis not wanting to give up UI control is likely very true, but shouldn't the decision to choose between Hyundai/Genesis UX or Apple UX rest with the driver?

It does cost car makers to install the needed hardware though. We pay for that even if we don't use it.

Sure Ed, there's development and implementation time involved with CarPlay, are you trying to say that the automakers would "pass the savings" onto us as the consumers if they don't implement CarPlay as an option?

The net implementation cost of such features across the entire Genesis/Hyundai fleet should be way below $100 per vehicle. I can guarantee the cost of doing so is not driving the automaker's decisions on the implementation of next gen CarPlay or not.

There is no savings, just less of an increase. Every tiny factor is included in the price of the car. Why should I pay $100 more for a car if I never us CarPlay?
Sorry, ai won't be contacting Genesis on your behalf.

That's totally okay, thanks for your consideration anyway.

Full disclosure... I despise the whole Apple eco system and the games they play to rope users into it and stay in it. The fact that Apple had to be forced - kicking and screaming - to adopt USB-C, an otherwise overwhelming industry standard is but one testament.

However, I have absolutely no problem with folks preferring Apple products. It's a personal choice. And as long as there are choices, it's all good. Just like the coexistence of Apple Carplay and Android Auto right now. You pick yours; I pick mine.

I believe it is existentially imperative that all Automakers maintain their neutrality and not play favorites. The moment they start integrating one camp's system to the point of excluding others, that neutrality is broken and consumer choice inexorably suffers. In the end, pissing off 1/2 or more of an automaker's customer base is marketing suicide.

Like it or not, automakers are already software developers and embedded systems integrators. The line between traditional automakers and tech giants will continue to blur.

Just what I need, another existential threat.
