If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi all. Bought my 3.8 Titanium Grey with Tech package last week. I am loving the car thus far. I have noticed one thing with regard to the startup logo on the nav screen. When I enter the car the screen is dark, but I can see the ever so faint outline of the "Genesis" logo on the screen. If I wait a few seconds, I can also then see the faint outline of the Nav Warning screen. This is before I push the start button. As soon as I push the button, it lights up. Is this just the hard drive system priming itself? Has anyone else noticed this? I think it would be cool if the Genesis Logo lit-up on the screen as soon as you entered the car, rather than having to push the button to get this to happen.

Welcome aboard, odyguy! Thank you for signing up and congratulations on your new Hyundai Genesis! Now what you're describing sort of sounds like a monitor that's had something on the screen for too long (the reason for screen savers). Does anyone else get this on their nav screen?

Interesting observation! Haven't noticed it before...what are others seeing here?? It is possible that when the system senses the smart-key, it routes power to the embedded cpu to begin the boot process, but does not route power to the screen. When you start the car the screen lights up and the cpu is effectively all ready booted up. Welcome aboard!!:welcome:

What's puzzling about it, is that it is not there all the time. Only when you first enter the car before pressing the start button. I have checked from the outside of the car before entering, and the faint image is not there. As soon as you open a door or unlock the car...you can see the faint image...weird.

I'e noticed this phenomenon, too, and like Sal, I suspect it's due to a bit of screen burn-in rather than a deliberate effect by the designers. My windows are tinted so I can't really check the screen before I open the door. Frankly, I don't notice this very often nor does it seem to be getting worse, so for now, I'm just ignoring it, but it'd be interesting to hear if other Tech Pkg owners have noticed this.

Hmmm...that is wierd!

Ill check that out tonight!

I like BAYWAYRIC's thoughts. The screen/cpu will be primmed and ready for you to push the ignition button. OR, when you open the door it begins a system check immediately which may only last a few seconds.

Surely they didnt test the screens in the R&D department for extended periods to see how long it takes them to burn out....and then put the some of the leftovers in our cars! HA! Just a random thought! Stupid...I'm sorry!

For what it's worth, I've noticed this in my V6 Tech also. It certainly looks like burn-in - but that's exceedingly strange, because it takes an LCD quite awhile to burn in and it usually goes away after awhile.

Ya ditto that, LCD's are "BURN PROOF"

Here is more on it....

What Is Burn In?
Burn in is one of the most commonly misunderstood concepts regarding television displays. Burn in is a phenomenon associated to television products, where a static image left on the screen, over time, can permanently wear itself into the display. This phenomenon is generally associated to phosphor based television displays, such as tubes, CRT rear projection, and plasma.

A common question is if LCD televisions/monitors are susceptible to burn in. The most common answer to this question is no, LCDs are immune to burn in. However, this answer is somewhat of a half-truth.

The Truth About LCD and Burn In
It is a fact that LCD displays are immune to phosphor wear, simply because LCD televisions do not use phosphor to create a television image. Otherwise, it would be like saying an electric car can run out of gas.

However, LCD displays have certain characteristics that do not make them completely immune to static images. On LCD displays it's kindly referred to as "video memory." LCD panels use a complicated process of organizing liquid crystal molecules into a twisted or untwisted state, which allows polarized light to pass through the liquid crystal substrate. Over time, it is possible the liquid crystals can "get used to" the state of twist they are in, causing a static image, similar to phosphor burn-in, appear on the screen.

Some say that simply turning off the display for 24-48 hours eliminates the effect, while others have claimed the effect is permanent in extreme cases. Nonetheless, home users of LCD televisions have little to fear.....

As a television, LCD products get enough movement of the image, or cycled on and off enough, that the buildup of video memory is highly unlikely. Leaving static images on an LCD display for a relatively short period of time will have no damaging effect to the display. In other words, you'll only get video memory buildup on an LCD television if you try to do it on purpose.

And to pile on here, we are talking about a sequence of screens, first the logo, then the warning screen. This is consistent with a boot process, not a static screen. For Odyguy, the smart key is amazing. It 'knows' if it is inside or outside the car, and behaves accordingly. That is why you only get the screen behavior when you are in the car. If you want some fun, sit in the car, at idle, and hand the key out the window and have the person walk away. The car knows, and it tells you "THE KEY HAS LEFT THE CAR."

Thanks for all the replies. Makes me feel much better that this is normal. Definititely not burn in, as several have pointed out. If you look real close you can actually see the image come on if you are quick enough. That is why I like these forums. Good converstation and helpful owners. Rock on!

I suppose it's just the back-lighting of the LCD monitor that doesn't come on at the same time as the computer starts sending images to it. You can sort-of see the image displayed but, without the back-light on, it looks like burn-in.

I have noticed this too. It is most noticeable if an exterior light or sun is shining on the screen.

I think Gimli has it right. It is simply an image from the DIS on the screen before the LCD backlighting turns on.

LCDs do not emit light they simply filter light passing through the film, therefore if the back light is not on you will not see the full image.

It does seem as though the system boots on as soon as the car door is opened, but the back light does not turn on until the start button is pushed.
Therefore as mentioned in other posts if you wait long enough before pressing the start button, you only see the warning screen and not the hyundai logo.

The advantage of doing this is the system is booting faster as it begins as soon as the door opens, but does not unnecessarily wear out the LCD bulb (only coming on if you start up.)

Yup, Gimli's right and I have to retract my earlier post. I opened the door and got into my Gen (without the key on my person) and noticed the very faint Genesis logo come on and then go away after a few seconds. Definately nothing whatsoever to do with burn in. Kinda strange that it comes on at all without the key present, but definitely nothing to worry about.

DIS Screen

I moved this post for you Calvin. BaywayRic found it for you. Matt:)

I know this topic was discussed in another thread but I'll be darn if I can find it.

The topic concerns the screen always seeming to be on in the backround when the ignition is off. Did this item ever get resolved? I thought it may come on when it detects the key in proximity to the car or if the car door is opened. It is hard to tell if it is on by looking through the glass. It seems that the "h" logo is faintly on all the time. I did not notice this the first week I got the car. I noticed that when it started I also got a notice showing up that states: "Navigation System Starting Up". Before this the nav system just came on without any notice. This is all probably a "non issue" since the battery seems to be holding its charge and not draining. I did check my s/n and it is not part of the "big" DIS tsb T63.

Thanks guys for finding the correct thread for me. Now that I have re-read the posts I reviewed the schematics and I think maybe they designed the system to "pre-boot" while conserving power by not sending the back light power to the screen until the ignition switch is pushed. Just my opinion, but if this is right then all cars with "tech" should be seeing this.
