  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Looks like Strategic Vision came up with the category. I don't get it either and it seems Genesis is happy to get any award they can. I'd not brag about it.
I don't believe this is the first time or anything new. Genesis cars have been being called "near luxury" since the beginning. What will it take for people to realize these are true luxury cars? What will it take for the executives - or ANYBODY at Genesis Motors - to realize the same? I feel like nobody cares (at Genesis Motors)...

I think a lot of it has to do with perception and hopefully that will change over time. I think many currently regard Genesis as near luxury in the Acura/Infiniti grouping rather than luxury in the BMW/Audi/MB/Lexus grouping. I would imagine as the product line grows and if the quality and experience (ownership, dealership, service, etc.) is there, it will make the jump to luxury.

You're probably right...

But Genesis Motors needs to do something about this. Stop sending out press releases with "near luxury" in the title.

Acura is doing better lately. I think they're on their way back to luxury status. I think Infiniti has been there all the while. I kind of feel Genesis and Infiniti on about on par - with Genesis being more luxurious and Infiniti being more sport. The G70 may change that. But Infiniti doesn't have a G90 - as much as they want the Qwhatever-it's-called to be a real full-size car - which it is not...

Genesis Motors probably comes closest to Lexus at this point in time. The G90 isn't quite an LS500 - but it's very close - and in some ways - equal. The big picture still goes to the Lexus because of features and technology - the same way the Mercedes-Benz S-Class still takes the cake from Lexus for the same reasons...

Anyway, the G80 and G90 are not "near luxury". They're full-on LUXURY.

I just commented on the Genesis FB page: I edited the FB comment to correct my ownership of a 2018 G80 Sport, not 2019.

The way I see it Genesis is not a Tier 1 brand.

Tier 1 Lux brands are BMW, Audi, MBZ, Lexus, Jag, Land Rover, Porsche

Tier 2 are Acura, Lincoln, Caddy, Infinity, Volvo, Genesis

Genesis is too young, too immature, and doesn't have a stable footprint to be considered a Tier 1, give it 10 years.

IMO
Jag and Land Rover Tier 1? In exaggerated and inflated marketing perceptions only.
Volvo Tier 2? Doubtful.

When you don't consider reliability they probably are correct. Volvo seems like a great car but with their engine choices now only going with 4 cylinders it is tough to give them tier 1.
Forgive me, where does engine size figure into defining luxury status?

Engine size is definitely a perception of luxury. Mercedes, BMW, Audi - various V8s and some V12s. You don't see Rolls Royce and Bentley using four cylinders.

I agree that Genesis is not Tier 1 luxury - but I still consider them luxury...

pulled this from several car mags on the subject.

The general consensus for a brand to be Tier 1:

Dealerships must be exclusive and should be built to reflect the prestige and loftiness of the brand they represent, have a customer experience befitting their level of success and not have that experience sullied by the presence of mass market product or customers. Manufacturers must offer multiple sizes of sedans, cross-overs, a sports car as well as a "race" division that churns out high performance model variants.

Even Maserati isn't considered a Tier 1 because they are typically sold by Fiat/Alpha Romeo Dealerships. Aside from Beverly Hills I can't recall ever seeing a Maserati dealership that didn't also have Alpha's.

Land Rover / Jag might be a push, Tata Motors owns both, but usually see them on separate lots, perhaps conjoined by a parking lot or a building, but marketed separately.

In my opinion:

Tier 1: Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Porsche, Land Rover, and last AND least Lexus. I do believe Lexus is tier 1 luxury.
Tier 2: Infiniti, Genesis, Cadillac, Acura, Jaguar, Volvo, and last AND least - Lincoln...

Who am I forgetting?

It does without a doubt. If you only offer 4 cylinder engines that sound gruff and strained when cruising, that is not a luxury experience. Four cylinder engines definitely are fine in a luxury car but it is the application of them that is important.

Porsche, Alpha Romeo, Lincoln..

I think you would have to put Lincoln. in tier 2. Some would even argue that Buick could be also.

well if Buick goes in, then toss in Chevy and Chrysler as well, Buicks are just over priced Chevy's.. The materials aren't even that much nicer/better IMO.

On one hand, Lincoln came up so short with the Continental that I'm reluctant to add them into Tier 2. I feel Lincoln truly IS "near luxury". Then again, they just cracked the world in half with the new Navigator. So I'll go edit my post and add Lincoln into Tier 2... Buick? No. I mean - at least not in my opinion. They're just not that good. They don't have a true full size sedan (the LaCrosse is a big midsize) - and they can't even build a Regal GS that's competitive with anything but competing four cylinders... They're definitely "near luxury" - on a good day...

I do not consider Buick to be luxury, any tier. but have seen them mentioned in the conversation.
