  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Just thought it was interesting that the forum statistics show that as of the time of this post there are 16122 members to the forum. Of that 16122 it is shown that 9285 have never made a post to the forum.

And apparently some never made another visit to the forum after signing up.

That's still a lot of lurkers!!

Why are there only 6837 of us that have actually posted? And many of the 6837 made only 1 post a long time ago.

Was there a forum change or crash in the past that caused this strangeness?

Just wonderin'

No, no crash or anything like that. A lot of people just sign up once, ask a question, get an answer and never return until there's another problem - and the Genesis cars are pretty reliable.

There are a zillion and three people who've been here and never signed up either. Most people, by FAR, just browse the site without ever registering...

Member stats

Funny because I was looking at the members list yesterday too. Wanted to see what the average age of people who actually have contributed to the forum is. There was a poll a year or so back about age but is probably outdated with all the second gen owners now. Looking through the members list I noticed that hardly any of them had posted and many had fake ages. Also surprised that I wasn't on the first page of the post count with almost 600 posts.

We do have a decent sized group of active posters. That's good. I'd like to see more but it's not easy getting people to join forums these days. We really could use some good Coupe conversation as well - but that's even more difficult.

That is more difficult because of a few rival forums and this forum attracting mostly sedan owners somehow. And 600 posts isn't a ton ;)

This forum has a wealth of information about various topics. Some members prefer to start new threads or ask new questions about topics that have been discussed (and answered) previously, while others may chose to use the search function (either Forum search or Google search) to find information in these forums.

I don't think it is necessarily bad that a lot people don't post, since it may just mean they were able to find the information they needed that was already posted by others. That is a testament to the value of this forum, and not a negative IMO.

Yes, the main competitor being owned by a very wealthy corporation. If I had that kind of money this place would be soaring. This site started about the same time as that site and there was no Coupe yet. So this place naturally took a tremendous lead in the Sedan area. Unfortunately, by the time the Coupe was available, they already had a lot of activity. I hope we can get some Coupe action here some day...

Yes, true - very true...

Just to pick up on this, having watched both forums, and others, over a few years, what's happened is that other forum quickly became mainly about the 2.0T modders and their various enthusiast groups and events. This forum may have already been seen as a Sedan forum, and the Sedaners have little cohesion as an enthusiast group, by comparison.

That site has also had vendors paying dearly to post about all kinds of mods, generating friends and customers and more events. Their vendor threads are almost unmoderated, selling stuff to members who tend to be young or very different than the person who buys a Sedan, different even from those who buy Coupes not intended for modding and slamming, and most of those don't post on forums like modders do. That site also became a haven for Coupe haters, oddly enough, and Hyundai haters and 3.8 haters as well. That site generates chat-room-like threads going on for hundreds and hundreds of posts with no real content, moderator abuses of power, and it went for years it seems with no supervision or corporate ethics to keep abuses in check. This forum remained small, yet polite, mature, Sedan-heavy, generally pro-Genesis and pro-Hyundai, with short, problem-oriented threads.

I think the ship has sailed on their form of Coupe discussion, because the car has already been discussed to death and dissected over and over and over, far more than the Sedan or Equus or Veloster will ever be discussed, here or elsewhere. Despite all that discussion, though, the car is still a mystery outside the relatively small subculture. Yet, the Coupe forums are essentially over, whether they realize it or not, for all but speculation about a future Coupe generation (which may revive it), paid vendor threads, and a few re-threads as newer people buy used Coupes and start modding and asking questions. Also, that site has generated thousands of defectors and bans, with several rival forums and Facebook groups that hoped to supplant it as THE place for 2.0T modders. However, it appears that the 2.0T young modder subculture is not what it once was, either, and seems well past peak. Young modders get older, Coupe modders get interested in other cars, but also, a sizable group of Coupe owners are like Sedan owners and do not want to be associated with all that, either.

So, it's hard to see how to attract Coupe discussion here from several other sites, and given the above, hard to see why any site owner would want to ;)

IMO, I suspect Hyundai-Kia learned at least one thing from the US market, that it was a mistake to put a 4cyl turbo in the Coupe and encourage modding. What happened was that way too many young and very vocal people bought the cheaper base models, complained on forums, modded it up, etc, and as cool as that might have been for like one season, it just doesn't reflect well on the brand HK said they were going for with Genesis. A 50-yr old with money and class who likes the Genesis Sedan or Coupe in terms of style and substance and value isn't likely to be attracted to the same things as a 19-yr old who wants his slammed, loud, plasti-dipped, turbo bling ride to be "liked" by other 19-yr olds. Nothing wrong with either approach, but they are indeed two totally different owners and posters, both creating search engine traffic and brand perceptions about "Genesis". I also speculate that this modder/slammer subculture, and possibly those other sites themselves, all seem to have contributed to the demise of the turbo-4 in the Coupe, and speculation over a whole new Coupe generation at a higher price point...assuming the Coupe is not discontinued altogether for lack of sales.

This is probably another set of reasons why there are so many lurkers here, as it's hard to easily fit in here as a Coupe owner among so many Sedans, when Coupe threads rarely take off - some don't even get answered at all, or are dominated by Sedan owners who "think it might be this", etc. There's no subculture boosting the posts here, no group events or anything like that to belong to if someone wants that in a forum. So, those elements do not convert lurking into posting. Maybe that's why a lot of recent threads here and elsewhere have been about the future, and certainly about positive perceptions of the Sedan and Equus. Maybe this site could become even more oriented as a place to discuss the concept cars and future directions of the various Hyundai, Kia, Genesis, Equus, models.

I need to be quick since I'm on the way out but Coupe discussions have been picking up a bit lately. I'm really happy to see that. Oh, one thing I need to respond to specifically:

What happened there is the original owner was a true enthusiast and generally kept things rolling along very nicely. After he sold the site - there really wasn't anyone truly "into it" to watch things moving forward. I'd love that opportunity because I'm here every day watching things. I'd be happy to keep it organized and have no intention of selling the site.

I think the 2015 Genesis Sedan section has gained a lot of new posters since the 2015 MY came out. I have seen an uptick in people joining asking questions then come back with posts that they finally pulled the trigger on the new 2015 Genesis. This forum (2015 Genesis Sedan) is very active and continues to grow in my opinion...

Oh, absolutely. This is without a doubt the busiest (by far) Genesis Sedan forum on the internet. However, we're lacking Coupe discussion - and the Coupe is very much a part of the Genesis family. I firmly believe that Genesis will one day be a brand - and this site would be 50% incomplete without Coupe owners...

That's key. You've built a community despite the competition, and are here with us as admin/moderator. It's a welcoming, drama-free site, with some great discussion. That's why I'm here :)

I wish I could help boost the Coupe side more, and that may come when we have some confirmation of where the Coupe is headed in future and can capitalize on it here.

It actually was getting pretty rude and childish for a little while. Some of the threads were enough to probably turn someone new away from the site.

Thank you. Plus, I actually OWN a Genesis (finally). I'm actually INTO what the site is about. Not like some other admins. Even more I owned the Genesis, I liked it - and Hyundai beforehand...

I know. I blame myself. I wasn't here enough. Now I make it a point to be here every day, almost all day and night. I've figured out a way to be here or close by all my waking hours...

From a personal prospective, I have been here for 7 years (from the very early days) and can attest that we seem to go through two yearly cycles, around late spring and fall, of couple weeks of intense rudeness and then somehow the air clears, then we go back to civilized conversation!

I stuck around because of the positive atmosphere and wealth of knowledge accumulated throughout the years, but in reality I consider myself as mostly a Ghost member for extended periods of hibernation (due to very limited free time), unless I feel I have something important/interesting to share (generally related to electronics or the drivetrain ?sub culture? purely from a nostalgia's sake), otherwise I login very infrequently. So, I wonder how may people are doing the same for similar reasons that may affect the quoted stats?

I would bet that 90%, if not more of problems experienced / questions that can be posed by any Genesis sedan owner, have already been answered somewhere on this site, which make it so successful, but adds to the fact that people do not need to login to find answers to their questions.

'Hyundai Genesis', one way to encourage membership, is to make the site a little more exclusive by encouraging people to create a login account, perhaps modify the site in such a way to allow anonymous users full access for couple of days, then encouraging them to login by restricting access to only able to view earlier posts as an anonymous user?
Just my two cents, to try and increase membership levels and allow for the possibility of targeted advertising revenue...

We are all a part of keeping on the look out for that. I read every post when its posted now and always have this open on my desktop at work. We will continue to encourage productive discussion :)

im on my second genesis sedan and have found the site very useful. sometimes you've just got to stick around and you'll start to get to know the other owners and you'll really enjoy your time on the boards.

The only trouble with that idea is search engines would also be limited the same way guest users are. Otherwise I think that would work very well...

Thank you. We definitely need eyes around here - as all live communities do...

Do the spiders roll their IP? If they do, then doing a free look might be a way to have more membership and good bot traffic....

You're very welcome. I love this place and want to see it grow :)

That one should be an easy one solve, simply by looking at the browser type as well if the source requested /robot.txt file, one should be able to distinguish between a visitor and any search engine.
