Greeting everyone!
New to the Genesis world and my first post. Bought a used 2018 G80 Sport at the beginning of June. Really liking it but have noticed a few quirks with the infotainment system. I don't know anyone else with a Genesis in my area so I figured I'd pose the question here since I can't test it out on another car. Bear with me as it is a bit on the in-depth side. If you don't use the feature I am talking about, then it likely won't make much sense.
Two important notes before I dive into it:
1. If I connect the phone via the USB port and have CarPlay running, the issue does not occur and everything works fine. It only happens when I don't have the phone connected with a lightning cable, which is usually the case when I am just running around town locally and not using Waze via CarPlay.
2. For iPhone users, when you decide to dictate a text message to your your phone, there are two ways you can do that. You can engage Siri and talk through the process or if you have an iMessage thread open, you can hit the little microphone icon on the bottom right, below the keyboard (see attached pictures), speak your message, which the phone will type out, and then hit the keyboard button to turn the mic off and send the message. On my car, using Siri works without issue, whether connected via Bluetooth or the lightning cable, so that's not a problem.
Ok, now to my actual issue:
Since I don't usually connect my phone via the lightning cable when I'm just running around town or on my short commute to and from work, I am usually just connect via Bluetooth. My phone is mounted high to I can see it while still looking straight ahead. If I get a text and decide to respond, I usually just tap that little microphone below the keyboard (see pictures), dictate my message and hit send. I do that because it is a lot faster than talking Siri through it all, having it repeated back to me and asking me if I want to send it, etc. What is supposed to happen when you hit the microphone is that voice recognition enables on the car (you hear the ding sound) and the car mic captures your narration and the phone types it out. When done, you just hit the keyboard button on the phone. This works perfectly fine when the car is in Park. However, for some odd reason, if the car is in any gear other than park, the function does not work. Voice recognition does not enable and the mic therefore doesn't pic up anything. When I hit the keyboard button to return to the keyboard, which would normally turn off voice recognition, then the voice recognition engages and Siri asks me what she can help with. Again, in Park it works normally without issue like it does on every other car with Bluetooth that I have ever owned. However, when in gear it does not work. If the phone is connect to the car via the lightning cable, then the feature works in all gears. Only when not physically connected and in gear does it not work.
I know that's a lot to follow and a very specific problem but curious if anyone else has encountered the same issue. Obviously there are some work arounds (always connect to car with cable, use Siri exclusively, etc.) but I am hoping to solve this issue instead if possible.
Thanks for hearing me out and for any suggestions you might have.
