  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

GPS Updates - maps

It's just like updating the firmware in my Sony Bluray player... :)

This should be a lot more than a firmware upgrade. They are cranking in some serious bug fixes here, when you look at the run time for the updates.

Somewhere on these "update disks" there should be a "readme" file which explains just what it is that is being updated. Might ask your dealer tech to take a look. Maybe they would share. If they would print the readme file, we could share here!

Fixes to watch for:
1. Random erasing of NAVI address book
2. Resetting of the trip computer when you turn the car off
3. Perhaps some iPod stuff [based on complaints here]
4. Obviously, map upgrades.
5. Perhaps, better integration with Nav Traffic
6. Maybe we can see the DVD menus and the screen blanks out only after you hit play.
7. Perhaps added file support. Think JPGs so you can view pictures off a thumb drive.
8. Perhaps Auto set the clock from the GPS
9. Perhaps add digital GPS speed to trip computer display.

We can hope.

I'm just curious, as the TSB includes the affected VIN numbers - BUT, they are just for the V6's and don't seem to include any V8's, even though there were v8's produced before October 1st. (...46E... but no ...46F...)

Any thoughts anyone?

My guess would be they are only really interested in the last 6 digits, the manufactuing sequence number. I believe the engine letter indicates nothing more than that, the sequence numbers didn't start over again just because of an engine change. These particular software updates care nothing about the powerplant, only the DIS. Note the last TSB was for an ECM update that was engine specific, so it got its own TSB.

Ric,
Because of the VIN# break the assumption is that newer vehicles already have the latest firmware. It will be interesting to see if there are any visible differences in the interface, or just glitch fixes.

Hi,
I happened to be dropping off my new 4.6 for window tinting today and the service technician told me that a new software update for the GPS is due to arrive at the service department any day now. He told me I'd simply need to come in and have the hard drive updated by a technician. He did not go into any details about what the upgrade is aimed at providing.

I just traded out of a Lexus GS 430 and the cost for an updated NAV disc ran between $300 and $400. I'm hopeful to get quality GPS without the cost via this system...we'll see.

I tried the button combination to access the service/update screen and it worked fine, even while driving.

You can see the current version of your software, hardware versions, and FM frequency and signal strength. There is also two sections for front display and BACK display, although they don't do anything.

When I exited the service configuration by pressing FM my system locked up in the sense that I couldn't change the volume or audio input. I thought I'd fried it somehow and would have to have the dealer reset/update but after I turned the car off and on again it changed. Now the volume was stuck all the way down and nothing worked(!) After I let the car sit for an hour and then turned it back on, everything worked normally. Very strange error mode, really scared me that for the first time I'm discovered the true ramifications of having such a computer controlled system.

I want to do the update but agree we have every right to know exactly what's included. I bet they just don't want to acknowledge the full range of problems (although I haven't really had many).

I bet an update will erase all user data. All addresses, audio settings will probably have to be re-entered. Not too big a deal...

Are you kidding? There should be a way to back up all user setting to a USB memory key and replay them. That would also be helpful when switching cars etc.

Cheers

Thomas

Well, I guess there is at least hope that they can make an update that would allow you to do this.

So all of us only have to enter all addresses and phone numbers 2 times more times from scratch before we can save them....

Cheers

Thomas

has anyone actually done this update yet?

any word on what the update changes?

my dealer is getting the discs in monday and i'm doing mine then. i'll let you know how it goes. hopefully it's not a total waste of time

Jonah,

Please let us know what you see that's different after you get it done. Also, if you know of a map error (old data/new road) check and see if the map data is new. I think my map data is from 2006.
