If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I will probably be wrapping/plastidipping all my g70 trim when it comes in. I just remembered the cruise radar with the fake grille picture on it. Can I wrap it, or will that cause problems? I know you can wrap the ultrasonic parking sensors without issue, but I'm just not familiar enough with how the radar works.

^ it's not a fake picture. It is a cutout of the grill covered in clear plastic. It cannot be altered.

I don't know how wrapping or painting would affect the function of the sensors behind it.

Interesting. It always looked screen printed to me. I suppose once we have the car I could just slap a piece of scrap vinyl on there and see if I get any errors.

Why would you? There are camera/sensors behind it. That’s the whole point of it...to protect the electronics while keeping a clear view.

black out the grill and put a skull with a black background or something on the cover. Lean into the fact that you wont be able to match the rest of the grill :p

I didnt realize there were cameras back there too, I thought it was just radar. Radar might not care about the vinyl depending on how its calibrated.

It also is an important part of the AEB. Do you want to chance tinkering with it? Wrapping it may affect some circumstances and not others.

I doubt there are cameras - cameras are in the windshield - except for the front view in the 360. It's just the radar sonde I think. I doubt vinyl would harm anything - may attenuate the signal a bit but I doubt it would break it.

Just be prepared to remove the wrap if you get undesirable behavior.

I still vote this.

Any updates or pictures of a blackout?

I Just removed my own bumper this week to install a big snorkel. While doing this, I also removed the grill to black it out as well.

To clarify for anyone else, the sensor is NOT on the grill exterior of the car. The sensor is mounted to the actual bumper of the car and not the bumper cover.

The plastic piece on the grill seems to just be a protective cover that will prevent things/debris from hitting the actual sensor.

As others have mentioned and done before, it should be totally ok to paint/vinyl wrap it.

I, myself, wrapped a 50% vinyl tint on it to darken it, but it ended up just blacking it out since the back and sides does not allow visible light to pass through. I ended up just removing it and spraying it to match the grill.

I may try a 30% vinyl tint in the future to still try to continue the flow of the "mesh".

20210423_151658.webpThis is the back of the grill. It is just a plastic piece.

And this is the front of the radar sensor. It does not touch the front piece at all, and is seperated by a few inches of gap

That's a good idea. Post some pics of you end up doing that

I plastidipped mine because that weekend I didnt have the time to get everything prepped and ready for paint and 2k clear. I plan on redoing mine with actual paint to get that gloss look.

3 week update with covering the sensor cover: no problems at all. Adaptive cruise control works exactly the same, and adjusts with the different car length settings.

I havent had the car activate my brakes for me, but I have had it warn me that I was driving too fast and getting too close to a stopped car on the offramp off a freeway.
