  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

GV80 3.5TT

Like for BMW (due to Biermann's influence) the 3.5TT is likely underrated (albeit, probably not as much as BMW's straight-6).

There is going to be a higher output variant which will go into the upcoming G80 Sport and other Sport variants.

But the standard/base 3.5TT is enough power for the vast majority of buyers.

With increased boost, there's a higher likelihood of decreased reliability.

Which is why Honda didn't go for more power in the Civic Si and why the 2.0T in the Lexus IS is under 250 hp.

And as EdP has stated, 0-60/1/4 mile times also depend on the transmission and rubber.

While Genesis seems to have improved the quickness of the in-house transmission, it's still not as quick as the ZF8.

Agree that it's probably underrated. I also agree that Genesis is generally very conservative in their tuning. Hyundai engines in general run pretty rich, deliberately. Richer tuned engine = more fuel burned = less chance for detonation or knocking = longer engine life.

AJB, I don't disagree with you. As I said with my earlier post, I think the GV80 has plenty of power and I also appreciate the design philosophy behind it. My question was a technical one about just the engine. That is, why the Lincoln 3.0 and 3.5 liter twin turbo V6s, neither of which are aggressively tuned and both used for SUVs with a similar design philosophy, produce so much more hp and torque than the Genesis 3.5tt V6. I'm sure there is a gear-head answer, but I don't know it. I assume that the HP of the Lincoln and Genesis engines are measured in the same way, but maybe not.
Interesting, I haven't seen the performance specs on the Lincoln yet. I looked tem up for the GV80 with the Prestige Package, Car & Driver states it'll do the 1/4 mile in 13.9 seconds with a top speed of 149 mph (which is actually a Genesis manufacturer's claim) and a 0 to 60 claim by Car & Driver of 5.3 seconds.
Now to compare apples to apples I'm going to check Car & Driver to see if they tested the Lincoln Nautilus and what the performance specs are.

The 2.0 is 6.8 seconds, 1/4 in 15.3 at 92mph. The 2.7 is 5.9 seconds, 1/4 in 14.4 at 97mph.

Are those performance specs from Car & Driver? (so we're comparing apples to apples). Different magazines have different ways of testing performance.

Yes, that is why I provided those from Car & Driver.

And don't get hung up on HP ratings alone. There is a transmission and differential in play too and the gear ratios matter on acceleration. You can change them to get better acceleration or better fuel mileage.
I didn't realize there's no industry wide standard used to measure horsepower and torque. There certainly should be...

I prefer 3.3T over the new 3.5T on any day.

Why would that be?
Having an additional feature like a radiator, pump, water-cooled blocks, roller rocker arms, low cams; all of these are extra weight and cost. Unless, make the engine more powerful (above 400 HP), and give a higher RPM peak.

GV80 doesn’t come with a 3.3T
Yes, Hyundai spent massive money to produce the new 3.5t which is solid. However, they failed to implement engine capability.

Are you saying the 3.3 doesn't have the parts you mentioned above? I'm not sure I'm following you.

Of course the 3.3 has certain design of rocker arms and a certain design cam that may be different than those on the 3.5 but are you saying the 3.3 doesn't have a radiator, water cooled block or water pump?

I'm saying 3.5t have additional parts

Haha sorry just be bothered to explain everything in barney style.
So, you can't explain it. They would not add an ounce of weight unless it was justified with economy and/or performance. I'm sure Barney and Friends here would really like to know the details as many are very engineering oriented and love to get details.

Daehanminguk, I'm just curious why you prefer the 3.3t over the 3.5t... somehow we got off into radiators, rocker arms, and cams.
