  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

You can now reserve your GV80 for the US market. My question is, can you only get the 3rd row with the Advanced+ package??? And are the 22-inch wheels only on the Prestige package?

That’s what it looks like. And it almost looks like you can’t have both the 3rd row and the prestige package.

Also interesting is that you lose some options with the smaller engine (no 3rd row seat, nappa leather, digital cluster, etc). It means if you want the nicest model in terms of luxury, you have to go all in in terms of price.

Wow, what a disappointment with the build options/packages. I would imagine once the sales are nowhere near what they hope they will open things up in the future. If they want to play with the Germans they are going to need to add much more flexibility to the configurations. I know it is hard since they aren't custom building but only allowing 22" wheels in the upper package will probably drive away many potential customers.

Also interesting they want reservations but haven’t made any official announcement regarding pricing. You could be reserving a $70k vehicle without even realizing.

I want it all! I wanted the Prestige package with the 3rd row and the 22s. Hmmm...
Exactly. If I wanted to go cheaper I'd go a fully loaded Santa Fe. It the price range it is still going to be the best value.

Or course, option packages are just like cable TV. If you want the Smithsonian channel it is bundled with the Laundry and Paint Drying channels.

Genesis has always bundled everything together, with few individual options. This is really no different from how they've configured their cars in the past. Allowing free customization is something that would make the car at least 10k more expensive.

I find it strange that there would actually be a complaint about a brand not nickel-and-diming every single option like the Germans, which has always been one of the most vocal criticisms about their vehicles.

I know that is how they have done it in the past and probably one of the reasons they can't make traction sales wise. Look at the G70, it is arguably the best car in the class but sales are poor. Obviously a lot of that has to do with poor dealers, marketing etc.

With the GV80, and future vehicles, offering more options/configurations does not in anyway mean they have to Nickel-and-dime a consumer. What it does do is get them closer to a level playing field with the Germans to try and get some if their market share. For example, a person should be able to get a fully loaded vehicle with 20" wheels. That doesn't cost more, in fact in theory it should be less expensive although possible higher carrying costs for varied inventory.

You are probably the first person who has made the claim that customization results in greater sales, when it's the complete opposite- hence why regular branded mass-manufactured cars sell in multiples of any luxury brand, and the brands with the most customization make the lowest volume of cars (i.e. Porsche and Bentley). Customization makes the cars more exclusive, more expensive, and ultimately less profitable for the OEM to put on dealer lots. Kind of defeats the idea of the GV80 being a mass-seller, and goes against what makes Genesis stand out from the nickel-and-dimers. I'm sure the wheels can be replaced if you ask the dealership though, like how some Kia Stinger GT2's had the dealer option of installing either 18 or 19-inch wheels for the AWD variant.

The G70 came at the worst possible time, right in the middle of the Genesis dealer fiasco, and lost almost all momentum as a result. This shouldn't be a problem with the GV80.

You obviously are not familiar with the market segment that the GV80 is trying to compete in. Customization is a large selling point and is the reason why a large percentage of German luxury vehicle sales are custom ordered rather than purchased from dealer stock.

The Germans can do it because they can afford to do it- having more options inherently makes things more costly, and it reflects in their base prices. You don't see the same level customization options in anything from the Japanese- which the Genesis also competes with. And I don't think even you would disagree that Lexus sells quite well compared to most of its German rivals, despite having less customization options. If Lexus can pull it off, I have no doubt Genesis can as well.

My concern right now is their dealership network, which has always been Hyundai's Achilles heel, not just Genesis. I would rather they spend money on that than on customization options, which don't get people to actually look at the cars in the showrooms and spread brand awareness.

They definitely will takes sales away from the second tier luxury brands. My comments were in regards to competing with the top tier.

I wouldn't consider Lexus a second-tier luxury brand. And a decade ago, neither was Infiniti, which outsold the 3-Series with their G35. But the Japanese manufactures have become complacent, refusing to update most of their products to the same competitive level as they were a decade ago. That's where they're falling behind. Many tend to forget that Lexus was state-of-the-art when they arrived with the LS 400, but nowadays their whole reputation has sunk to that of nothing more than "reliability" as they struggle to even add basic Apple Carplay and Android Auto into their vehicles, half a decade after Hyundai. If they were as active and ambitious as Genesis right now, I have no doubt we'd be seeing a lot less sales go to the Germans.

I think most folks consider Lexus to be a second tier brand in the SUV segment but it us just someone's opinion. They obviously have the sales but not the vehicles in my opinion.

In terms of technology and driving dynamics and pure luxury, I agree that Lexus's SUV and crossover lineup is not up there with the Germans or Land Rover (and woefully out-of-date with their Body-on-Frame offerings). But the RX alone outsells all German SUVs, and heck all of Land Rover in the past year. If Genesis can take a bite out of that RX, I think they would be doing quite well. For now, I see Genesis as the brand that bridges the gap between Lexus and the Germans. I don't think they have to strictly stick to one category of buyer like the Germans, and if they did, it would be more difficult for them to compete. They need to find their own niche.

In all of the articles I’ve read so far, they say that the GV80 offers an 18 speaker Lexicon stereo. I currently have a G90 and absolutely love my Lexicon stereo. I’m a huge fan of their stereos. In the online build configurator, as well as an article I found on KBB.com, it says that the stereo boasts 21 speakers. Very interesting.

For grins I just spec'd one out in Gold Coast silver. Absolutely gorgeous.

Does the Nappa leather in the Prestige package = quilted seats?

Been reading for a while but I guess it's time to register to join in the fun.

Does anyone know the difference between Uyuni white and Alta white? I love the look of matte white (Matterhorn on the Korean build site) in those videos and it would be very disappointing if the US doesn't get matte colors.

Not being able to get 3rd row with Prestige is also a bummer. Looks like I can't rule out the X5, Q7 and the redesigned 2021 MDX for now. Hurry and come out with more 2021 MDX info already!
