  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Has anyone found an 'upgrade' for Bluelink connectivity on our vehicles with 2G/3G modems?

I really only used the BlueLink for remote start. Good news! I recently found an aftermarket remote starter that works with stock fob. It is completely plug an play and works great. Google My Key Premium and your year and model. Just wanted to pass a long as I am tired of having to run out to my car in bitter cold days! :>)

Update: there is now a class action lawsuit on this. We’ll see if it goes anywhere.

***** BUY the MY KEY PREMIUM conversion kit takes 5 miniutes it keeps the alarm alows you to use orignianl key fob to start and stop the car. You will have to leave tempeature control settings set and on before you exit vehicle, so when you start car it will be cool or hot. I wish there was an app that would allow you to remote start and heat and cool seats. mykeypremium.com

There is a class action lawsuit filed against Hyundai and Genesis regarding promoting sale of cars with 3G system when they new it was going to become obsolete.

Yeah... Fat chance that anyone sees a nickle from that. Unfortunately.

What kinda lawsuit is that? Even if they have 5G in the current cars, someone will file a lawsuit later on saying they knew it would become obsolete. Everything becomes obsolete... lol

There are options. I know Compustar makes a system that will work. I don't know the cost of the one that uses cell service. I had a bottom of the line Compustar system installed on 3 other brand vehicles for $400 including everything. He has 3 other models that are 1 mile, 3 mile, and then the 4th, uses cell service with a monthly fee like Blue Link. I wasnt' interested in that even though he did mention the price. I am thinking it was between $800-1200 but honestly I don't know. Probably Viper also makes a system. They install it and can use the vehicle's CAN BUS to do the communications, and I guess shut down the factory system, although I don't know why that needs to be done, and they also have anti-theft modules so that the vehicle doesn't alarm when it sees the doors unlocked or it started by different means.

So try and find a local dealer of CompuStar or Viper.

The class action lawsuits at best might give you $50 toward a new system, but usually it's much less.

The issue with trying to upgrade the telematic system is the IBOX module (the brick behind your touchscreen). I kid you not, it's a microcontroller running a customized Android OS with a very restrictive firewall and no way inside. It handshakes with the head unit in the car to pass data, but a lot of stuff would have to change to upgrade it.

You would need a new baseband firmware for the head unit
You would need a new IBOX (because the modem is integrated)
You would need new coax pulled to the shark fin in the roof
You would need a new shark fin.

Being 2G is a really crappy way to plan obsolescence.

Not going anywhere as there is an arbitration clause. I'm a lawyer and I will arbitrate the matter as I have the Platinum warranty and since the modem is in effect defective and it is not listed as an exclusion what's the defense

I have a 2019 G80 and the Lexicon stereo died (3G head unit). Genesis is replacing the head unit free of charge. I asked the service manager if the new head unit would be 4 or 5G and he was clueless. It is scheduled to be installed Jan 15th 2024. I wonder if I will be able to use Genesis Connected Services if the head unit is not another 3G model.

It will be the same as what you had.

Aside from replacing the very expensive head unit that has the integrated modem I don't know if there is a solution. I know LG made some and I think Harmon Kardon made others but not sure. They are the real culprits. It is not the same as swapping out your $59 Spark-O-Matic radio.

We all want the latest technology and get POd when the old becomes obsolete. Do you still have those 8-Track tapes? If there was a cheap plug in I think they would have done it.
Having a working modem in a modern car is not the equivalent of a tape deck not working. It is an essential element. This is a major design mistake but one also made by many other manufacturers (including, e.g., BMW). The designer should have recognized the importance of this technology and designed the head unit to permit replacement of the modem chip.

The current Genesis cars, at least mine, have LTE but not 5. I hope that Genesis has recognized that now and designed the current head units to allow for chip replacement.

That's a bummer. When I bought the car it was certified pre-owned and they did not disclose the fact that I could not use Genesis Connected Services.

There's a better solution that is $40 a year instead of $200 a year.

It is easy to second guess in 2024 the decisions made in 2014. Yes, that 2018 product was finalized typically 3 to 4 years ahead. I would agree that a working modem is very desirable, but essential is a stretch. Millions of car work just fine without them over the past 100 years.

Yeah... It was a misstep - but I had the Connected Services for a while and it didn't really work that great anyway. In my experience, things like the remote start had a 25-35% failure rate even if there was good cell coverage...

Might miss the SOS functionality in the event that I may happen to drive over a cliff, but I would likely be pretty well screwed anyway before they managed to dispatch the meat wagon.
