  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I am still getting a misfire at start up, it's worse if the car has sat for awhile. No code, no CEL. I've already replaced all coils, plugs, and walnut blasted the intake valves. I've read a number of people who had dealers replace injectors under warranty to fix this, however I can't find any DIY info about it

Depending how expensive replacements are, thought there were specially shops you could take injectors to who would mount them in a see-thru box and run cleaner straight thru them to clean them and visually observe atomization pattern to be sure they sprayed correctly? Might just be applicable to race engines and race shops and not so much consumer OEM engines so I may be way off base here?

I'm sure there are, but ultimately you can buy them from GB reman (pretty well known injector rebuilding company) for $30+$30 core charge. All 6 for under $200. Not sure if it's worth having them rebuilt when replacing is so inexpensive

Just go to the dealer to get it checked, and stop throwing money at it. Plus GDI is very high pressure, are you sure you want to fiddle with that?

To me, taking it to the dealer out of warranty for a problem like this, would certainly involve "throwing money at it."
Yes, it's high pressure, but it is easy to safely bleed it off before working on it. If the guy in the dealer's service department can do it, then so can he.

Ultimately, I feel like the walnut blast, plugs, coils, are almost maintenance items. If they fix it, great. If not, they would be due pretty soon anyway. I found a local hyundai performance shop and am probably going to drop it off with them. I'll update with what they find.

It was the injector(s)!!

For anyone else dealing with this, it's a VERY slight misfire at cold start up, particularly noticeable when the car is put into gear. It almost feels like a cold transmission from the 70's where it sort of shudders a bit when torque converter is unlocked. But it was a distinctive "misfire" that would go away after 20-30 seconds. Sometimes if going slightly uphill and partial throttle you could make it do it, but it

FYI NONE of the scan tools including the Hyundai VDI tool reported a misfire. It had the dealer totally stumped, they were steering towards blaming the transmission. I asked them to keep diagnosing the fuel injectors, the service advisor called after a few days and said he'll be damned that was it. They have some special test mode in the dealer VDI tool for injectors, they had to run it on the bad injector 5-6 times in a row before they were able to get it to flag as bad. I had them replace all 6 injectors at $1100. But DIY it would not have been that bad, if you can remove the intake manifold to replace plugs you could replace injectors.

Good to hear they found the problem. Would be interesting to see what the injector spray pattern looked like at start up? Did you look at the bad injector to see if it had carbon build up at the nozzle end? Just curious if that one looked any different than the others?

I didn’t ask for the old injectors but they said the bad one looked absolutely perfect. No visual indication of a problem.

Is yours a 2012 or newer with GDI? Just curious if they were the Direct Injection Injectors replaced or the older port type injectors on the 2009, 10 and 11...

Mine is a 2013 GDI. Well maintained. If I ran techron it would help significantly, but next fill up the misfires would come back. The misfires were very noticeable to me, but my wife/others could barely notice anything even if I said anything. It was by FAR most evident on a cold start, put the car into gear. But if I was just driving and gave it some gas while going uphill I could "make" it happen
