  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So I had to put this on here and I hope you can appreciate it for what it is worth. Today I was driving my Genesis home from work when apparently I got the attention of a husband and wife driving in a BMW 5 series. Driving in the city, for about 5 minutes, stopping and going thru lights, they made it a point to punch it and pass me whenever possible. I watched them over and over looking at my car in their mirrors. I have to admit there is no greater compliment than to be gawked over by a driver in a car when you do nothing to attract attention. Again I hope you guys take it as a compliment as it just shows that people are starting to take attention of the Genesis. :p

Kinda, but I drive the 4.6 and gave the bimmer a good look at my tail lights as he got smaller and disappeared in my mirror.

Driving the Genesis for only a few months I have noticed that the people that actually look or check out the car are the ones typically driving premium brands. No looks from Honda, Toyota, Mazda et al types. I find it rather amusing as I've had a Volvo S80 AWD V8 pull right up to my car in a rather empty parking lot and give it the once over, pointing and talking with his passenger. Same thing for a Mercedes owner that I saw in the rear view mirror at a traffic light, also with a passenger. As a former Accord owner and a non luxury car buyer, I wonder if it's because they cannot identify it or cannot believe that Hyundai produces a car like the Genny. In a few years their perception might change a bit, then again maybe not as Hyundai has decided to keep the Genesis and Equus at Hyundai dealerships for now.
As I understand it, initially Hyundai thought that Accord & Camry type buyers would be buying into the Genesis - looking to trade up. However as it turns out there was more interest from premium car buyers. Guess I'm in the minority again. ;)

I guess I kind of fit into that Accord driver moving up group. Now I have never owned an accord (always been a truck kind of guy) but test drove the Accord v6 with all the options and then the base Genesis (the one I got) and felt for the money the base Genesis was worth the difference. I was right:D

I notice they are predominantly men as well, it's funny i was just thinking this yesterday, men and cars are just like women and shoes.

So this weekend I was at the spring game for South Carolina football team. I had a guy come up to me and ask the million dollar question. He said he had been looking at my car for 30 minutes and was trying to figure out what it was. I asked him what he thought it was. He said from the back it looks like a BMW but from the side it looks like an infinity. I told him hyundai genesis and he said NO WAY. I love the jaw drop look. He said he has 280 thousand miles on his BMW and is thinking about getting a new car. I told him to go check out the genesis. He thanked me and said very nice car. So I guess you are right, it was a man and a current BMW owner. Very cool regardless (I never got any looks with my truck).:)

I had a guy and gal in a new modified mustang convertible ask me energetically at a red light "what is that?"

Got the same thing in a Trader Joes Parking lot just the other day. Say while we're on the subject of Trader Joes how many of us shop there?

Given the mods done to your car - especially that exhaust note, it's no surprise :)

It's funny, but this car has by far generated the most response from people I don't know. Parking lots, church, gas stations, and stop lights. That's saying something, because I bought the Dodge Challenger in it's first year of production. That car was quite a conversation piece. The wing badges keep people guessing. I knew I'd like the car, but this response from other people is pretty unexpected. It's surreal.

It's funny seeing their reaction when I shrug and say "Ehhh, it's a Hyundai".
;)

I get a lot of questions as to the make of the car and then the wonderment about the brand.
We just got a Trader Joe's here in Greenville, SC. We have had a couple of Aldi's, a German Market chain here for several years and I was surprised to learn that Trader Joe's is owned by them. Aldi's moved around the time the BMW factory opened, I guess to provide a taste of home. Many here would drive to Atlanta or Charlotte just to shop at Trader Joe's. I used to shop there all the time when I lived in California, there was one in West Covina. Lots of angst here when it was announced that 2 would be built but no locations were announced. Southwest Airlines also announced that 2 airports would get their service. As luck would have it Greenville and Charleston were awarded both. Columbia cried a lot about being ignored by both but including the money sucking bureaucracy located there, Columbia is the Newark or Compton of South Carolina.

I had driven Lexus since 1994, but in August 2010 I decided I simply was not going to pay the Lexus price. I'm a bit embarrassed to say that the hardest thing to get over was not having an "L" or an MB symbol on my car (I live in S. California).

Bought 2011 Genesis V-8, Tit. Grey/Black int. Very pleased with car. The other day, stopped at a light, a man about age 55 rolled down the window of his Lexus SC430 and asked how I liked it. Said he was seriously thinking about getting one.

This is exactly what I'm talking about - the brand cachet thing.
Of course there will always be those that will not even consider a Hyundai based only on the fact it's a Hyundai. My wife just happens to be one of them. Lol. Yet oddly enough the most looks and comments based on my limited experience with the Genesis are from those driving the brand cachet cars! I find it interesting to say the least. Time will slowly change this perception as it seems Hyundai has been on a roll since the 2006 Sonata - with no end in sight.

Happened to multiple times. The one I remember is really funny. My wife and I were driving down the city to go to a ice cream shop. I spotted a black MB following us. When we stooped at the parking lot , 2 young ladies came out of the MB(CL550 AMG) and asked me " what kind of car is this? And sorry to say but we were following you for past 5 mins to get to a stop to ask this." I said" It's Hyundai Genesis"...Then what happened was really funny..One of them almost fainted...." Oh...my god...." she said" Its looks so sharp like a Bentley....." She was really impressed with the car and asked us permission to look inside the car....That's something you don't hear often...

I also had a MB E class driver walk over to my parked Genny and tell me he thought the car was a Bentley....

Interesting that the Genesis seems most often confused with a Bently. I had Safelite come out to do some minor repairs to my windshield, and the tech had to call to ask where I was parked. When I pointed out my Genesis, he said "Oh, I drove right past that one because I thought it was a Bently."

Odd.

I kid you not, but the other day in front of a bar I was asked "What is that, a Maybach?". It never ends lol.

Learned that the hard ways... was unaware of the Genesis at one time myself.
Read up on the stock features and options... for a few months.

Now have 2 of them in the driveway.

Had a young Audi driver on the other side of the pumps get so interested in the Genesis that he tripped over the pump hoses trying to check it out. When I told him it was a Genesis, he didn't know who made the Genesis. When I told him Hyundai, he just said "Good looking car."

Happened to me today. Was at a shopping center and of course parked in as remote an area as humanly possible. ;)

As I am returning to the Genesis a Honda Accord full of early university aged men pulls in beside. Each rolls down their window to view the Genny and ask if it is new (pretty much is as I purchased in October and put her away for the winter).

Even though the Genny is fully rebadged they know exactly the make and spend 3 or 4 minutes gawking at the car and commenting how great the black on black appears (just got back from having the windows tinted with 20% VLT 3M film).

Hyundai would be pleased the 18 to 25 demographic can identify a fully rebadged Genesis. While they are likely not targeting this group, without awareness there is no consideration and ultimately sales.

For those that say the Genesis's style is staid and conservative, I present 4 people from an age bracket that would espouse "style and performance" as paramount.

Have experienced many other drivers staring at the Genny in bewilderment, but this is the first time I have had someone intentionally pull up beside just to pay homage to one of the best automotive secrets on the planet.....but apparently not for long. ;)

I am seeing a few more Genesis on the road as of late. Seems popularity, at least where I live, is picking up.
