  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Having issues keeping the vehicle within the lane, not sure if it's alignment or something else

Hello,

I've owned my 2022 G70 for about a year now, I don't recall this being a problem at first and I really thought it was just me. But I drove my brother's car a few days ago and I have noticed that this doesn't occur.

Basically I feel like I have a really hard time keeping the car within the lane or in a straight line. When I start testing whether the vehicle swerves on the highway for example, I am able to keep it in a straight line without touching the steering wheel for a bit, but I do notice it prefers swerving to the right on its own (I guess most cars are designed that way right?).

What really made me think something is wrong is that when a friend rode with me he told me that I kept swerving and not staying in lane.

I guess I'll have to do a check on it next time I visit the dealership, unfortunately they didn't perform the alignment check on my last visit (I thought they would).

Either way, I have a question regarding the steering wheel, whenever I try to center it to drive straight it doesn't seem get back in the centered position easily, I have to try back and forth a few times to get it to be precisely centered. I don't know whether this is normal or not.

Overall, I really feel like I have a hard time keeping the vehicle going in the intended direction. Any thoughts?

Hmm, the first thing I'd do is get it aligned and see if the problem is an alignment issue (I'm not saying it is or it isn't, just that it should be done).

Make sure tire pressures are correct and then see if your dealer will do a courtesy alignment. Since alignments can be knocked out based on driving habits and such, not sure if this will be a warranty issue or not? There have been folks here who after the dealer checked the front end found out it was out from the factory. Your tire wear generally will show evidence when the car pulls to one side. My college aged kid never tells me when he hits a curb in his Civic while parking, I just watch the front tire wear and figure it out myself.

Alignments should not be too expensive but less you are a regular customer and have bothered to establish a relationship with the service folks it seem a large ask them to work for free On a car that is a year old. Also why would you expect they would have done an alignment on you last visit? I don’t believe it is on your maintenance schedule although they should have checked the tire for uneven wear. Then again after only a year it might not show. What did they say, or did you ask?

In any case, I think it’s too late to claim it was like that from the factory. Pay for an alignment (not necessarily from the dealer but definitely a place that does them a lot and knows what they are doing) and go from there.

I guess I just don’t understand this sentence. Maybe I’m missing something. The second clause seems to contradict the first clause.

also, you don’t mention if you have LKA turned on.

Yes I do have LKA turned off

Regarding alignment, as a 4-time Genesis owner, I'll add just a couple of observations:
  • Genesis models tend to get out of alignment relatively easily. I'm not sure why, but they do. This was true with the original Hyundai Genesis sedan, and appears to be the case with my G70 as well. Usually it's not severe, but it's noticeable. It's not as bad on my G70 as it was on my previous Genesis sedans (two BH sedans and a DH).
  • They will almost always pull to the right when they are out of alignment. Again, I'm not sure why. I wonder sometimes if it's the crown of the road causing it.
  • Some people swear by the Firestone Lifetime Alignment package; I've never used it, but I've considered it.

Were you unable to determine the cause of the misalignment? It can only really result from damaged or worn suspension and /or steering components such as tie rods, ball joints, etc. If the alignment has gone out of spec, a tech should generally be able to determine why.
Twitchy steering can also be caused by tire issues, change in geometry caused by different wheel offsets or spacers, severe crowning of roadway, etc.

No I never found out the reason; I just get it aligned and keep on rolling.

I am seeing similar issue with my 2023 GV70. Have you find out the rootcause of this problem? Please share so that I could ask my dealer to do the same. Thanks

Likewise, I'm seeing this issue with my 2023 GV70. Hence, the reason why I did a search to see if this was a known issue. I've had the lane assist on another car (CX-5) that I had. But it was nothing like this. I've gotten my GV70 realigned more than once. It's a shame, because I love this vehicle, apart from that. But it's like it takes over and I'm having to fight to correct the steering, or override its propensity to veer to the left. Anyway, I'm hoping Genesis will figure out the source of this anomaly.

Could we be talking the "lane assist" steering here as a possibility? Say you prefer driving close to the centerline, the system may be trying to direct the car more to the center or "right" side of the lane and it is these small feedbacks you are experiencing as "twitchyness"?

Not really. I have disabled all these lane assist and blind spot assist etc and tried, I see the same issues.

How often were your G80's out of alignment? I have to go in every 3 months and I've been using the Firestone lifetime alignment

For over 40K miles and three years I've never had to get an alignment on mine. The tires have only normal, even slight wear in this amount of time.
Firestone lifetime alignment
That's probably most or all of your problem right there. I learned this the hard way on a previous car.

I had a couple alignments from a Genesis dealer and it came undone within a month. I have new shocks, struts and tires. So ill keep troubleshooting. I agree with Firestone not being the best and I hear they sometimes don't do the work

I never do alignments, unless I suspect something is wrong. Every time I've done that, the car seems worse. Plus I have to go back at least once right after getting it done, because steering wheel is off, car feels like crap, etc. And that's with Discount Tire, Firestone, and dealers. But the least bad has been Firestone indeed. By the way, you have to pay double for their lifetime alignment; it's not free.

Same here! Can’t remember the last time I had an alignment.

There's just something wrong with my G80. It felt great after getting an alignment last week and after two days of normal driving, it's starting to slide after bumps and feels unstable again
