  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi All,

I am a proud owner of a new 3.8 coupe with a manual 6 speed. I have been driving a manual for 15 years and this car is quite finicky. Has anybody experienced a similar issue? I read a lot about the "Rev Hang" issue on the 2.0turbos. I don't know if this is the same thing.

Thank you.

i hadn't driven a stick for many years so i had a little trouble at first with the coupe. but now it's pretty smooth for me and alot of fun going thru the gears.

You're not the only one; this issue is on every Genesis Coupe 6-speed. Here's 8 pages of signatures to get Hyundai Motor America to fix the issue on 2010 Genesis Coupes:

Spam guard!! doh!

Here's instructions:

-Go to a search engine
-Go to the Genesis Coupe . com forums (On Genesis, minus the 'esis')
-click on genesis coupe tech
-find the "manual transmission problem" to Hyundai motor America, thread. It's like 8 pages.

Did you notice this during your test drive? If so, did you raise the issue with the dealer before making the purchase?
Just curious.

My 6 speed transmission seems to have smoothened out a bit at around 10k mls. Still shifting from and to 5th is less than smooth and forget about any quick shifting. Especially the 1-2 shift requires a bit of finesse and patience, bangin' gears will get you grinding them.
Being german I have driven manuals most of my life and this tranny is by far the worst. When the car is cold it is really difficult to engage first gear, once up to temp its ok. I'll bring that up on my next service visit at the dealer.
Nice and fun car all around, just the tranny sucks. You get used to it after a while.
other than that, enjoy the car, still make me feel good when i drive mine.

Have you tried changing out the transmission fluid with a synthetic one? The stock OEM fluids are absolute crap.

Its a lease car, so i'm not putting anything special into it.

You should check in to this technical service bulletin:
TSB-09-FL-011-1

According to this, the engine has to be re-calibrated in order to allow for smoother shifting when you get close to redlining the engine. Apparently, the engine cuts off when you get close to redline and this causes an abrupt shift change to happen because the engine speed drops off drastically during shifts...

I personally had this update done to my 2010 V6 Manual Track model today and it made a ton of difference in how the car shifts.
Now when I floor the gas pedal and lift up to change gears the engine/tachometer better matches the gas pedal's position and as such I get a much smoother shift.

Also, the engine doesn't power-down at redline and that lets me get a MUCH smoother shift at every point.

Check into it, it's completely free...

I printed the TSB off of Hyundai's website and took it with me to the dealership. Then they couldn't deny that it existed.

I live in Vermont, have the 3.8 grand touring with 6 speed. We have already had a couple of zero degree days here and when the tranny is cold, first into second is a problem. I resolved it by letting the engine warm up enough that the temp gauge moves a notch. Other than that mine works fine. I bought the car so I don't red line it and if anything I tend to undergear it - shifting between 3 and 4K RPM.

I have had manual transmissions for 30 years - it is all I drive. My last car was a Maxima that my son now drives. It has 268K on it with the original clutch!

The dealer replaced my 6 speed manual transmission in my 3.8 Track after it started grinding when I'd shift into 5th. Car had about 3000 miles on it.

The new transmission now clunks when either up or down shifting into second.

It's also hard to get into 1st or 2nd gear when it's below 40 degrees F.

Also, now it won't go into 1st gear while moving. The Hyundai district manager says they designed it this way on purpose. What a crock of crap!

I've been driving stick cars and trucks since I started driving in the mid 1960's. This is by far the worst manual transmission I've ever driven. That includes 2 years of driving 18 wheelers.

The car is fun BUT the transmission SUCKS! Not worth the $31,500. What a mistake buying this car was!

Going to look into the Florida lemon law.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents. I posted something about this in November under the "how do you like your Genesis" section, but this seems a more appropriate area and it is an update.
I bought mine in Nov? 09 and love the car in all respects EXCEPT my manual transmission. Every car I've ever had (since 18) has been a manual car so I know its "not me." This car has some serious issues shifting from N-R, N-1, N-2---especially when "cold." Even when warmed up, the shifting mechanism seems "awkward." You periodically "feel" the gears trying to line up and move into place. Workable when warm, but definitely not fun.
Easy to replicate the poor shifting every morning, when I leave my driveway and go down a slight incline for 500 ft. Trying to get it into 2nd is most of the time such a chore, that I'll skip it and go straight to 3rd. Sometimes, I can attempt the process more than 5 times (push out clutch and retry, release and repeat) and it just won't go. Its like there is no "opening" for it to even go into gear.
The dealer has changed out the trans fluid, and are balking at doing the "hardware fix" because THEY can't replicate this. What a Pain in the A--.
Will let you know how this turns out.
