HD Radio - Doe is work on AM

From what I can tell, the HD radio will pick up AM radio stations broadcasting in HD. I have looked on the website that list HD radio stations and see there are some in Atlanta as well as many other ares. However, When I tune these stations, I don't seem to get the HD programming. I am thinking that the stations are not very strong and likely need to get a "full quieting" signal in order to decode the HD signal.

Has anyone actually been able to pick up HD on the AM band? If so, I am wondering what you think of the sound.

Although I don't know the answer to your AM HD question, (and I listen to a lot of AM Radio), I do have a question about "LP" FM.

In a nearby very small town, there is a new FM station that plays "Blues" music. Their identification goes like this. Wxxx LP FM and I'm wondering what the LP means.

In My area, the HD Radio sight lists more AM stations broadcasting in HD than are actually doing so. I can tell you that the AM stations that are in HD sound very good. I would say that the sound quality definitely approaches that of standard FM, although the highs and lows are not as precise (AM has an inherent limitation to frequency response due to it's long wave nature). FM HD on the other hand sounds truly remarkable and to my ear much more dynamic than SAT radio.

Hi, Mark. I live in Atlanta metro and my Gen picks up the FM HD signals pretty well for the most part (106.7 FM is kind of spotty, though). I haven't tried the AM stations yet; if I can remember to do that I'll try a few on my way home from work tonight.

LP= Low Power. The FCC allows the licensing of 'community' FM stations that are most typically non-commercial. They can be a pain to get licensed, but they are many times the most fun ones to listen to, like your Blues station!

I heard a AM HD signal today. Excellent Quality! Simply amazing sound. The HD signal would go in and out. If the signal is very noisy, it does not decode the HD signal. In any case, it works and sounds great.

I listen to 1 AM and 1 FM station and they both come in over HD ... it almost sounds like completely different people the quality is so much better.

It seems to vary somewhat by station; my guess is that this is reflective of the station's signal.

Mark, I only picked up one HD broadcast on the A.M. band in Atlanta on my Gen and it was a talk show so I really couldn't gauge the sound quality. The FM stations I listen to on occasion do sound excellent.

I'm here in the ATL as well and the difference between HD and standard are significant. Now if 680 would broadcast in HD!

This is perfectly normal. Depends on the signal strength. It will normally take a few to acquire and buffer the HD signal. I have one station that takes about 3 seconds to acquire HD1 then an additional 5-6 sec. ot acquire HD2. Well worth the wait

There's a clearly audible difference between AM and HD-AM but the tinny sound is hard to get used to. Very similar to highly compressed XM channels or the internet streaming audio feed of the same AM stations. But I suppose given HD-AM only has 40-60kbps of bandwidth to work with, it's never really going to sound like FM.

That seems typical depending on how strong the signal is

AM 790 is the one I was able to pick up. Sounded great! What station did you pick up?

Poke around on FM. 640 AM has a sister station 94.9 the Bull. They have three channels on FM. The third one is 640 AM simulcasted. Possibly, 680 may be doing the same thing. I found 640 just by scanning and seeing what all I could find.
