  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Head Unit To Get Replaced

Got into my car earlier this week and the nav screen kept going back and forth between a black screen and the Genesis wing logo. Took the car to the dealership & they said they'll have to order a brand new head unit. Luckily for me they found one (the only one in the country they say) in Columbus, GA. Otherwise I would have had to have waiting until May before they could get another one.

First of all, I just wanted to whine a little and say I really, really hope this is the end of the electronic woes. I've had three prior cars with major infotainment & electronic issues and all but one of them had complications and continued to have problems down the road.

Second of all, doesn't it seem odd that there's only ONE head unit available in the entire U.S. for warranty work?

Anyway. Just feelin' the new car blues at the moment. Only owned her 3 months and 2300 miles. Bah humbug.

That is frustrating but hopefully you won't have too many other issues. I've not read about many head units being replaced so I would assume this is a pretty isolated incident.

Sorry to hear of your problem, but as already mentioned this is probably an isolated incident. Electronics are infinitely more reliable now than say 10 years ago, but they still require a burn-in period and if they are going to fail it is usually in the first few weeks/months of operation.
One thing to consider is to delete all your contacts, navigation addresses, etc. on your existing unit (assuming it is still functional enough to do this) before you get the replacement. You can do this easily by selecting Factory Reset in each menu. Often these units get sent for repair and then used as refurbished replacements. I had one fail in my Gen1 2009 Genesis and I was shocked to find that the Refurbished Replacement still had all the information of the previous user. Home address, phone numbers etc.. No guarantees they will wipe the information if they refurbish your present head unit.

In the electronics world this used to be called "infant mortality", but I guess that's frowned upon these days. Just the luck of the draw, as others have said not a common problem.

Replacing head units in the first generation G was extremely common. I had four head units in the two years I owned the car. The second generation G head units seem to be better but still not good. The biggest problem I have heard with 2G is that the voice commands don't work at all when trying to enter an address in the NAV. Mine works horribly.

It feels awful to buy a new car and need a major repair instantly. One of my biggest complaints with Genesis is why they don't stock more parts in the U.S. There is another post here about a person with a new car waiting three weeks for a part.

Here's hoping you have good luck with your car the rest of the way. I believe you will once you get this issue resolved.

+1 for the Voice Commands. Mine is Useless whether its for Phone or Navigation.

are these problems with the 2015 only since its first model year? Anyone having issues with there 2016? maybe to early to report but its a thought

Let's put it this way, if Kim Jong-un ever toasts the part's warehouse, we are cooked too.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
My head unit on 2015 had to be replaced. It took about a month to get it. Dealer said it cost Hyundai $5,000.

MSRP is $4,748.60 (not including labor).

You can buy it online from a Hyundai dealer for $3,561.45

I don't know what Hyundai's actual cost is, but I suspect that they get it fixed/swapped by the vendor for free (Harman International) if it fails during the first few years.

Problems with the head units are not new, and many forum members have concluded over the years that it is not a good idea to own the Lexicon system while not under warranty (which can include an extended warranty).

Looks like mine will have to replaced also as my phone system does not work..(2015).

Mine was replaced twice!

My head unit, antenna and wiring harness have all been replaced. Hyundai had to get the head unit from Korea. After this, I bought the 10 year Hyundai warranty on everything that the standard warranty did not cover. A pain in the ass and I don't even use the nav.

If Genesis is going to succeed as a stand-alone luxury brand, they will have to re-think their parts chain and keep a complete line of parts in the US. High end customers will not tolerate a 2 plus week wait for a replacement part; at least not for more than one purchase.

FWI, I was scanning the auto edition of Consumer Reports; the Genny got a "black circle" for electronics reliability and red for everything else.

Problems with the Lexicon Infotainment system go way back to the first USA Genesis in 2009.

In Canada even the optional extended warranty does not cover the Head Unit completely. It is replacement up to 80k kms (50k miles) at no charge and then there is a sliding co-pay charge increasing with age/mileage. Shows the confidence that Hyundai has in the longevity of these units.

Is it true that the head unit is only covered for 3 years/36K miles? Funny that the rest of the car has a 5 year/60K mile warranty, and the powertrain has a 10 year/100K.

Thanks for all the responses everyone. Much appreciated.

Correct. However, for 2016 models going forward, the infotainment system has the same 5 year / 60K mile warranty as the rest of car (except drive train). This applies to all Hyundai models.

All the more reason to pick up the extended warranty if you plan on keeping the car long. Keep us posted on the fix.

Can we buy the extended warranty after already having purchased the car? How much is it?

Yes you can. It increases in price with the more miles you have on your car. I got the HPP when I bought my car for $1784. Others got it as low as $1250.
