  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Head Unit To Get Replaced

The head unit on my 2015 Genesis Ultimate, at 46K, now won't boot, just loops the banner screen. Like most of you I've done exhaustive research and ran through checklists; button reset, sd-card pull, power-button hold, fuse pulls, battery disconnects. Given the documented number of similar incidents, 3 year only warranty, and COGS for this item, I sent a succinct letter via registered mail to the US COO. Suffice I had higher expectations for Genesis. Requested just a one sentence pov reply (honesty not deflection). If there's a response I'll post it.
I'm sure you are disappointed but every car has things bread and need repairs. Sucks when it is you. Out of warranty, don't get your hopes up.

Mine went out at 47K on my '15, it's being replaced under the aftermarket warranty I bought with the car (2nd owner). The Hyundai warranty wouldn't cover it. It keep becoming unresponsive, locking up, on a 4 minute cycle. Haven't seen the invoice yet, but it's $thousands in parts.

I suspect the new replacement will have the same design flaw in it. Some cars have parts like this where none of that particular car has one that works after all of them have some miles on them. Sucks when it's a core component of a major system. Makes it impossible to fix them with spares from donor cars when all the spares are all designed with the same flaw, and likely bad too.

No such worries when you buy an extended warranty. Mine cost $1,295 and lasts till 2024. It could even outlive me.

I'm thinking of purchasing a 2018 G80 5.0 Ultimate with 8,200 miles on it. Can you please share where you purchased your warranty? Thanks.

If purchasing from a Hyundai dealership, you'll want to purchase the HPP CPO Wrap assuming you plan on keeping the vehicle long-term. You will have the 5y/60k that follows the vehicle initially, but the extended plan from Hyundai is arguably the best plan available on the market.

There are different levels of coverage with Gold and Platinum (top) options up to 10y/120k with $0/50/100 deductibles. These plans are priced at the dealer by keying in your VIN.

If purchasing elsewhere, you should be able to go to a Hyundai dealer (within a specified time frame) and get quoted. Note that there are both good and bad dealers, so it pays to shop multiple before making your final decision.

At my local dealer. I have a ‘12 Genesis. Bought the warranty in ‘14 for $1,295 (haggle price) and it lasts till 2024. It’s transferable too.

Anybody know of a good option if your OEM warranty has expired? My 15 Ultimate was in service late Oct 2014, so I've been out of all warranty coverage (as the second owner) for about 7 months and as of this past week it looks like my head unit is shitting the bed. Sounds like similar issues as the OP, general lagginess, random black screens, backup cam not initializing, etc. I ordered a map update (since it updates the firmware of the unit) hoping that will help, but I don't have much hope. Would rather buy up an extended warranty for $2k, that covers it and more rather than just paying the asinine "several thousand dollars" just to replace the head unit with one that may do the same thing...

This really isn't something I thought I'd be dealing with in a relatively new car. It doesn't really make sense to pay $4k to replace it, when that's 20% of the value of the whole damn car...

You can find replacements on ebay - The android's are ~ 200, the jog dials ~ 400-600.

Any programming that the dealer would have to do? I don't use SXM, but I do have active Bluelink service. I'm pretty techy and honestly I might prefer myself getting into the dash and ensuring I don't break anything to cause rattles than to have a tech at my dealer do it for much more money. Also does anyone know if there are different part numbers at any point through the 2015 and 2016 production run? Obviously I'd need one for an Ultimate with the 17 speaker Lexicon...

I'm not sure about the programming thing but the reseller provides the VIN from the donor, so you can get the activation code.

The 2015 Ultimate has the jog dial 9.2 Lexicon with 19 speakers. My head unit is fine but I'm in the same boat about buying a platinum wrap warranty which does cover the head unit and tech. Spend $2K now? Or maybe later?

Or you can set aside a separate savings account for repairs. That's what I did, instead of buying a warranty that may or may not (usually not, they try their hardest not to pay) cover a given repair.

Exactly why I'm still on the fence about it.

Yeah - tough call. Still, if you kick in $50 or so every paycheck into a savings acct., you can end up with a nice stash before you know it. I've got about 5K in mine that I've dribbled in during the course of about a year... Fortunately, I haven't had to touch it yet.

Folks who expect to buy a cheap extended warranty covering the head unit on a 5 year-old car are dreaming. That time has passed.

I suppose it helps when you purchase CPO. I was able to purchase a full coverage extended warranty when I purchased my 15 5.0 last year.

I just got the news today that my head unit needs to be replaced for $3500. I found several videos on youtube that show how to remove it ,( not that difficult), and one of the videos mentions an electronics company in Van Nuys CA, you send it out to and th hey can repair. I will repost if and when I get more info about company and repair possibility and cost.

That would be some useful information - certainly a repair would be cheaper than an outright replacement.

The early build ones seem the most problematic. Mine was replaced by the original owner in 2016 under warranty. You can sometimes score a used one on Ebay for ~$500. You have to be careful though as the HU's look very similar between the 14 spkr & 17 spkr (Ultimate) and resellers aren't very good at telling you the difference. The Ultimate HU has a button marked "DISP" to the immediate right of the CD slot (1st pic), on 14 spkr button is marked "SETUP" (below). And one row of buttons only at the bottom for Ultimate.
