  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a 2015 3.8 sedan with the Ultimate package. On multiple occasions with the headlight switch set to "auto", the headlights will just shut off for around 3-5 seconds then flash back on. Wont do it when set to "on". This has been happening since I owned the car ( almost a year). Diagnosing an issue like this can be tough for most techs so I was wondering if anyone else has experienced it. Dealer said to video when it happens. Like I can do that while driving ! I asked how that would help them diagnose it.. it would only validate my claim.

I've having the exact same issue.

The dealer refuses to do anything until they can verify that it's happening. They wanted one of the techs to take my car home for the night and see if happens when they are driving. I didn't let them, since I know how these young techs will abuse the vehicle since it's not their own.

I have some video of the problem but haven't gotten a chance to go back to the dealer to show them.

As of right now, auto mode doesn't usually work. I keep my headlights in the on position as a solution until I can get the light stalk replaced. It looks like it has happened to a few other people as well and replacing the stalk seemed to fix the issue.

If the problem is only happening when the Light Switch is in the 'Auto' position, I would guess the problem is related to the light sensor. Just as many (including me) have had issues with the headlights turning ON in daylight from deep shadows or overpasses, I have seen the opposite happen at night when you drive under a strong street lamp or other direct light source. The light sensor seems way too sensitive and there doesn't appear to be any delay before reacting. I always have my headlights set to on all the time so they switch on/off with the ignition to avoid such problems.

It does happen when the switch is set to auto. However, it isn't and issue with the sensor. I can say with high certainty that it's most likely due to the light switch on the stalk. I say this because when the problem occurs, the switch no longer selects the auto mode. The cluster shows the light mode menu and auto is not selectable. It will go to OFF -> Parking Lights -> ON but Auto is not selectable.

Another thing is when the lights begin to flicker, the cluster switches from whatever mode you are on to the light menu, and back to the original menu. This will happen each time the lights flicker on an off. This shows that the car thinks something is being changed at the switch level, not the sensor level.

I emailed Hyundai NA and complained about it. Same here. Set to "auto" is when it does it. Not when set to " on". If thats what I have to do to stop it I will. But it negates having the auto features then. Not to mention, what if it is an indication of deeper issues.

Update: The dealer called and will now give us a loaner to see if they can diagnose it. I'll post any updates as I get them. Thank you all for responding !

Same here:(

Same thing here too. During the day, set to "auto", you can see the dash display flicker, indicating it's happening. My email to Hyundai NA was what got the dealer to call me and set up a loaner. My guess is, had I not emailed them from their site , nothing would have happened. Maybe you can try thte same thing with NA?

Correct. It only happens in auto mode. We're driving with them set to " on" until it goes back to the dealer later this week.

The dealer has our car so I'll update when/if they find anything. What your saying makes sense too.

Another gadget gone wrong.

And they're serious about "self-driving cars"?

It happened to me before. I was able to catch it on video. Dealer replaced the stalk and I have not had it happen again.

Here is the video for those who are curious: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyaMrUDMtQg

Same here. They replaced the "Multi function switch" in the stalk. Three days and so far so good. The service writers were NOT happy to see me it seemed. I guess they don't like people going over their heads to get something like headlights going out while your driving, taken seriously. Hyundai NA better get on top of the dealerships and make sure they don't blow people off like they tried to with me and others in here. Or they will have bigger issues on their hands.

FYI- The dealer cannot open up a file with Hyundai NA without having the vehicle in their possession. I spoke to a service manager of another brand ( friend of mine) and he said, in cases where its a random occurrence, the dealer has to contact the service tech line and THEY recommend what to replace as being the most likely culprit. That's based on feedback from other cases and the results of them. That's more than likely what they will do. They wont drive it around any more than needed.

UPDATE: Hyundai NA's tech line directed the dealer to replaced the multi function switch in the stalk. Its been three full days and so far so good. No issues yet. Makes me wonder what happens if you don't push to get the issue addressed as I did.

Same problem on my 2015 Genesis, thanks for the info on emailing Hyundai, and the video and reference to the other threads. This is apparently not uncommon and certainly can be dangerous. My lights shutoff as I was merging onto an interstate last week and it has happened on several occasions s. It's at the dealer now, waiting to see if they can diagnose.

Saw the airbag recall for Genesis in the newspaper today, the headlight issue is also dangerous, seems like a recall candidate to me. I plan to file a report with the Natl Highway Safety commission.

This sounds like a serious safety issue. Everyone who has had this problem needs to file a complaint with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration):
https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/

If I had a 2G Genesis, I would send a PM to every person on this forum who has seen this problem and get them to file a complaint.

Sounds familiar. I've been having that problem for about a month. When I look at the 4.3" lcd screen it flashes a change in the light status and it only happens when I turn the turn signal on part way. It's usually more of a flash for me than actually staying off (though tonight it did stay off for about 15 seconds). Thanks to the original poster for their post. I suspect we will be getting a recall notice on this one soon!

Not unless a lot of people file a complaint with the NHTSA. Hyundai will have to be forced to do a recall, kicking and screaming.
