  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Strangest thing - we noticed in our 2012 Genesis that when we put the signal on, the corresponding head light goes off. We checked this out looking at the reflection of our lights from the rear of the car in front of us.
When we signal left, the left headlight goes out and the same when we signal right.
Is this something normal or????

It's not the headlights - it's the daytime running lights. Yes, this is normal. Yes, this is also a very odd feature...

The DR light is actually the high beam running at a lower voltage on the Genesis. Your actual headlight is the outer bulb and will not turn off at night time when the turn signal is on.

Pretty common amongst the newer cars with daytime running lights. Most VWs and Audis do this as well.

Can you guess why it dooz that?

It does this to make the turn signal more noticeable. This feature is in a lot of newer models such as the Chrysler 300.

They were probably just mimicking Audi. Audis do the same thing.

The question was pointed at the OP.

This is typical NA style....especially Canadian. I hate it when I see it..it creates danger to other motorists at night time! In the rest of the world it does NOT exist. I believe you can by pass it somehow...

How is that? It turns off DAYTIME running lights on the side that the turn signal indicator is activated. If you are driving with your DRLs on at night, that means you have no headlights, marker lights or tail lights on; certainly a bigger safety concern!

welcome to canada bro, you will see 90% of drivers driving at night only with DRL meaning there are no taillights on or low beams...LOOL The DRL as it is in Canada IS BAD!!! Carmakers making this option like Dodge, Chrysler, Audi, etc... are ST-d...go to north europe where the DRL is mandatory they do have it but it works DIFFERENT, side/turn signals or low beams are NOT attached to DRL!

I hate this behavior. If you can't make the stupid turn signal bright enough to show up while the headlight is on, then that's purely lame.

If they'd make the turn signal an LED, it could easily outshine any headlight. As it is, you can hard see the turn signal at night when the regular headlights are on.

Sure, a turn signal LED cause a couple bucks more to the bottom line cost to produce it, but it least it would be a million times more effective.

This is considered a safety feature , if you notice most new vehicles with LED DRL's always go out (new kia sportage, complete AUDI lineup, Chrysler 300, the list goes on) its so that someone cannot say "they could not see your turn signal, cause of the drl being to bright

my headlight appears to switch off and then come back on when I hit the right turn signal only. This isn't driving lights (US spec 2011 3.8). Only started noticing it now the nights are closing in this year.
I'm thinking of taking it in as there's another 'stalk' issue: the intermittent wipe seems to do whatever it feels like these days whereas before ISTR it was only auto when at the first position on the intermittent setting and could be controlled if you turned it further.

Only my DRLs go out when the turn signal is on - not headlights. It is similar to Audi and a few others now. No loss of visibility, safety or temper.

Exactly, when the sun goes down (or in any low light situation) the head light logic prevails automaticlly, the headlight stays on, whether high or low beams when the turn signals are used. When the DRL logic is on, using the turn signal results only in the DRL on the side the turn signal is signaling turning off. I love the system, logical, highly visible and safe. No issues here!

Okay guys, I think he may have the same issue I have. (If he is referring to this)

When the light setting is put to ON not AUTO, when changing lanes and turning blinker (either way), the headlights go crazy along with the fog lights.
This is the video I took on my phone the first time this happened. I took it to the dealer and they cleaned the grounds, etc and claimed this was the issue but that only worked for around a month (or whenever I tried it last).

Now it's the same issue again, so back to the dealer I go. I wasn't really concerned with it or no rush as it only happens when I turn headlights to the ON position, but it doesn't do it when in AUTO. Weird huh?

Here's the video I uploaded:

Someone loaded the secret TSB 2012-666 on your car. ...and now it's possessed.

The statement that most Canadians drive around at nite with only their DRLs on is absurd. We have had DRLs for years before they were mandated in the US. Most headlights are automatic. I've spent years trying to get Americans to turn on their headlights in rain, snow or dusk while in Canada, to no avail. The setup on the Genny is excellent, where only a DRL goes out while signaling a turn. LIVE WITH IT AND MOVE ON !:D

My car (2010 V8 with tech) doesn't have DRL and the same periodically happens to me too.
