Hi everyone,

Just created this account today after finding this great site. I’m a very proud owner of what I think most of you call a 2015 G80? To my knowledge there were only around 48 Genesis cars imported to the U.K., all 3.8 petrol between 2014-2016. My car is a 2015 in Silver with Black interior.

It was originally purchased by my parents a couple of years ago, but now they are retired and off exploring the world most of year, and they only needed one car (a Mercedes - probably a swear word on here), so its been passed to me to own and it’s part of my small collection of 3 old Jaguars (probably another swear word) and Vauxhall Insignia (aka Buick Regal to the States).

I’ve got to say - I love it! The customer service from Hyundai puts Jaguar to shame and it’s a joy to own. And given that there were only 48 (apparently) imported to the U.K., its very rare here, so I plan to keep a hold of it. It was partially de-badged at the factory and only carries the Genesis name, no Hyundai branding at all, and no one, even the car geeks over here, know what it is, with the most common guess being Aston Martin, due to the Wing shaped Genesis badging. It gets a lot of attention.

The car is based now in Edinburgh, Scotland with me, and to my knowledge it’s the only one in Scotland, with the remaining 47 being south of the border in England. I did some digging and it seems the car was originally supplied to Belfast, Northern Ireland. Unfortunately, I don’t know much more about it. Genesis was only allowed to be sold through a minority of the U.K. Hyundai dealer network, luckily one was my local branch (which only sold one Black Genesis in 2015 - which was sent to England), so servicing isn’t an issue as they have a trained Genesis workshop. But there are no other outlets for owner support, no accessories or literature available over here. Genesis was discontinued in the U.K. late 2016/early 2017 due to low sales - most likely because of the lack of Diesel engine option and also because the British car buyer is still typically very snobby when it comes to the executive market and no one wanted to buy a thirsty Hyundai for £60,000.

So that’s my car in a nut shell, I’m hoping to use this forum to learn more about what I have and expand my knowledge. I created a U.K. owners register on Facebook to try and generate some support for us U.K. owners but so far I’m the only one on my page. I also own and run the worldwide Jaguar XJ40 Register and have started a U.K. Genesis Register, and so far have found 10 of the 40 odd cars sent over here, a lot of work to do on that.

Kind Regards
Paul Keating

Right hand drive? Where was it imported from?

Right hand drive? Where was it imported from?

Yes, factory built right hand drive issued to the U.K. like the 47 others, built to U.K. specification. This car was Delivered to Daly’s Hyundai of Northern Ireland as a demonstrator but purchased by someone on the mainland very shortly after I believe. I’ve written off to Hyundai U.K. for more info on its early life. It’s service logs place it in England before I brought it over the border to Scotland. I get it serviced every year from Hyundai, they do it free of charge for the first 5 years of the car, which was part of the Hyundai U.K. conditions. We only had the option of 3.8 V6 over here, I see by some other posts that other parts of the world had more engines available. And Hyundai U.K. have said that U.K. cars came fully spec’d, there was no options list, you only picked the interior and exterior colour, everything else was standard.

Oh lol. When you said imported, I assumed not meant for your market!

Ha, no, that’s my fault for not writing it very clearly, apologies, I meant imported from the factory. They weren’t built here, they were built where the USA etc cars were built and dispatched new to U.K. spec and RHD

Welcome aboard mate...
actually the 2015-2016 where also sold as Genesis under the Hyundai brand, 2017+ are sold as G80 under Genesis brand, but they very much the same car.
If I was back in England, I would have bought a slightly used one and sod the petrol cost, where are we these days? £1.20 a liter (roughly $8 a us gallon)?
Alas, I am on my forth one over here...🍻

Hi David,

Yep, from cars I’ve been able to trace over here it’s all been Genesis under Hyundai, the U.K. has never used the G80 name or separated the Genesis brand as I think they were discontinued here just before you guys made the transition in 2017. And my car is the only one which has been de-badged from Hyundai and branded Genesis only, but I think that was a badge snobbery decision from the first owner. The newest U.K. Genesis I’ve traced is a 2016 car and I’m hoping my info request from Hyundai U.K. will come back with some interesting stuff regarding just what they were up to with the 48 British RHD cars. My theory was that most were demos which no one bought, then became Hyundai management cars for a year then sold off for a massive discount just to get rid of them. My car is 4 years old and has a low mileage of 28,000 (it had 25,000 on it when purchased 2 years ago) but some that I’ve found of the same age are between 50,000 and 70,000 - very high for the U.K. for such young cars.

I wish petrol was that cheap! It’s in the high £1.40’s now, even £1.60’s in the rural areas. The Genesis only does 1,000 miles per year tops so fuel economy isn’t an issue, I’ve got an economical diesel for the mile munching on the daily duties. What are you guys paying over the pond for fuel these days? And now that you’re on your fourth, how are you finding them? Clearly you like them, but how are they coping with having a busier life than what I’m inflicting on mine?

£1.60? OMG, that is $9.28 for US gallon, and here we are witching that the Gas (/Petrol), is around $3.50 (0.60 per liter) on the east coast, $4.5 (0.78 per liter) on the west coast!
I loved the original V8 4.6 (110k mikes) and R-Soec (5.0 liter, with more than 45k) ), and the current 3.8 &.5.0, they have been a model of reliability... I never regretted giving them a chance back in 2008 even it was a close call between Jag XF and the Genesis after looking at the usual suspects (E, 5, GS etc) and honestly I never looked back...

You really did make the right choice David! I’ve owned Jaguars since I was 18, I’m 32 now and they just get worse...and worse! I’ve still got 3 classic ones two from the early 90’s and one 2003 XJ8 and they are fine, but the new ones are almost as bad as Jaguar’s customer service. Hyundai and this Genesis really has surprised me, and I’m not happy that the U.K. has no plans to revive them.

Yeah, you guys should be over the moon with your prices. Come and do some driving in the U.K. and you’ll never complain about your costs again. Britain truly does screw you over with car ownership and running costs. I’ve holidayed in the states 27 times and can’t get over how much cheaper it is over there compared to here. Got family in Canada, can’t remember the costs but I don’t think they are as expensive either. Large petrol car motoring really is for the hardcore over here.

That’s very good news! What worried me about the Genesis was how electrical it was, even Jaguar are not as electrical in most of their range, and as I’m keeping this car for hopefully decades, I was wondering how it would last, and had nothing to compare it to due to its low numbers over here.

One thing that we are missing over here is the linking up system that you guys have, where you can control the car from an app. We don’t get that over here. Hyundai took great joy in telling me that our cars didn’t need any options lists as it came with everything, so I said to the salesman, so what about the uplink system the Americans have, and he changed the subject... I find that America gets tech a long time before we do. GM and it’s onstar programme is another example, you guys have had it a long time from what I hear, we only got it 2 years ago on our GM divisions. Same global parent companies but different/delayed global decisions.

Over here Hyundai, Kia, Genesis offer a manufacture 5 year bumper to bumper & 100k / 10 year drive train warranty.
Some of us do buy the extended 10 year full warranty, as with any car, things sometimes do break and the electronic stuff do get expensive, for example, the nice 17 speaker, head unit is around $3k to replace 😱

We get a 5 year warranty with those brands too (3 years with all other brands - Ford, JLR, BMW, etc), and the Genesis has the first 5 years of services free too (which is very unusual) but nothing for after then, and no option to extend to 10. We would have to take out an aftermarket warranty with a generic/non brand aligned company which isn’t worth the paper it’s written on so it looks like you guys score there too

Hmm, now I have been here for more than 20 years, I keep thinking I should head back across the pond, for at least couple of years to try it out, before I make any long term plans... but hearing your prospective makes me think I should shelve that idea... 😂

I just got back from Switzerland and Germany for 10 days on business. You are correct. They make it hard to own cars over there. You have to be rich to afford to drive them. I saw all these people getting on trains with their bikes, ride a couple stops and get off. The gas was over $9 per gallon after I did the conversion from liters. Everyone is being pushed to go green over there.

We sure are, there is a massive push in Europe for alternative forms of transport, but there is no infrastructure for it, especially electric cars. And after 6 months of having to drive a Hybrid for work, give me petrol any time.
